UPDATE: So I started this as a deadzone blog, and really at this point its just a place for me to show what I've been working on. I'm a bit of a hobby butterfly and am always doing different things. There's a little bit of everything here so hopefully you will find something you are interested in. Recently I have been working on more inquisumunda / necromunda type models. Not really armies for 40k but individual models set in the 40k universe. Directly below are a couple of the more recent things I have been working on. Below these pictures starts the original blog. The original blog starts off as a deadzone blog and is honestly a little rough. It gets going and my painting improves somewhat so stick with it till the end if you haven't visited before.

Hey there guys. I spend a decent amount of my time on Dakka looking around the P&M blogs and figured I would give it a go myself. I'm not the best painter in the world... would maybe claim average at best, so I'm not expecting to wow anyone here. What I wanted to do was give myself some motivation to work on my new Deadzone stuff. Maybe I can get some other people motivated as well. I am open to comments and constructive criticisms, but as I said, I'm no master painter. I will also be working on my picture taking, hopefully I can get better at that as well.

I'm gonna start the blog off with some Deadzone minis. I have a few done (except the bases as I haven't decided what to do yet) and am working on more. Some are on my table drying as I type this. I ordered the retail pre-release so have been working with plague and enforcers so far and some limited terrain. I have the Rebs, Marauders, and a scenery upgrade sprue coming tomorrow from Amazon, so excited about that. Anyways, enough talking. On to some pics!

These were the 1st models I worked on from the box. I Like how they came out. If you have any suggestions for the base let me know. Right now I'm leaning towards GW textured gray, then drybrush it up with a little tyrant skull, then a nuln oil wash. Suggestions welcome!

I then finished the other 2nd gen and the Corporation peacekeeper captain.

These 3rd gen plague just got finished up about 1/2 an hour ago. I am pleased with how they came out.

That's all for now. Hopefully will have some enforcers up later.

Hey look at that a deadzone blog. Woot.

Hell, I never even *thought* to look for this stuff on amazon. Neat.

Looks like they're all coming along nicely. Have you ever considered clear acrylic bases? Failing that, you might try that new(ish) GW textured base paint. Knowing GW it'd be an expensive option but it might be decent too.

I always look for stuff on Amazon. The Rebs and Marauders have already sold out, and the scenery has already gone up about 8 bucks, so I guess its good I got on there when I did. I'm probably gonna try the GW textured stuff. I've seen your clear bases, Grim, and it may be something I look into.

Got a few more pics to post. Got three more enforcers completed (again, except for the base). I like how these turned out. I wanted to go dark with these, but thought the red could help out so it wasn't TOO dark. Anyways, hope you enjoy!

First, a WIP shot

Then, the finished product.

Enforcers look nice too. Are they a little different from the enforcer captain, or is it the yellow background?

They look no-nonsense and serious, this is a good thing, fits the environment. Looking forward to seeing more

Its definitely the flash bouncing off the background. Used the exact same paints and what not. I figured the yellow background (which is just my hobby knife case) would be better than all the random models on my table photo bombing everything.

The bases for these guys would llok good with some gray rubble (use a sheet of corkboard and break it up to look like shattered concrete) and maybe throw in some bits of cut up sprue or plastic tubes for metal pipes and tin bitz 'em than verdigris em a lil. I like the Deadzone minis. I thought they did a Kickstarter awhile back but I didn't have the cash. You may also want to get some textured plastic sheets that look like deckplates and that would look nice mixed in with the concrete.

I really like the green monster-skin. Good stuff

So I got my new package of Deadzone stuff today. Rebs and Marauders starter and a terrain pack. This should give me enough terrain to be able to have a nice board and also not have to play with the same pieces every game. This is all the basic stuff I need to play at this point. Yeah, Mercs at some point, but this is enough for me for now. So lets take a look at the supply drop. It doesn't matter too much, but the boxes are very nice. No instructions still, just like the KS, but apparently that may get remedied. I don't care too much. I don't believe most people have seen the packaging, as most of the KS stuff was just thrown on a big box for the KS orders, at least thats my understanding, so I thought it would be good to show it. Anyways.... here it is.

I took a couple extra pics of the terrain box, as this is the part of Deadzone I think will have the best chance of getting picked up by the wargaming community as a whole.

"And I miss you, like the deserts miss terrain"

And the inside. I think its a pretty decent amount of plastic for the money.

So there's that. Opening up new toys is the easy part. I've also been working on some more enforcers today. Here are some WIP shots. Hopefully will get them done tonight. If not, then definitely tomorrow.

Basecoat down!!

Thats all for now. Please feel free to comment and make suggestions.

I will get some pics of some finished terrain up next time CanadianBeaver. Still have some work to do. Also, thanks for the suggestions and stopping by Grim and nemissary!

Well, this is a deadzone-related blog. Still waiting on my stuff. You can essentially consider me to have pitched a tent in your metaphorical front yard

The retail packaging looks nice. Are those clam shell cases the larger size? The thinner size comfortably clamps 25mm bases between the foam sheets included, the larger one seems to do the same for 40mm bases. They're pretty sturdy and surprisingly effective.

Yeah, Grim, they are definitely the larger ones. They will be perfect for carrying around your strike team. I've never used the mantic cases for model transport before, as I'm normally toting around large armies, but if this catches on with my group, they will be great for it.

You can buy the cases separately, and you can easily squeeze 20 something models into one of the standard sized white clam cases. It really wouldn't take *too* many cases to pack an army away. I'm not sure if I'm keen on buying them on their own for ~$4 a pop, but I'm happily using those that I already have. It doesn't sort out your vehicles, but they are fairly compact which is nice.

I may have to mess around with them some then. Especially as I haven't sprung for a carrying case and I usually game about an hour away.

Awesome bulkheads how I've missed thee. I'm looking forward to seeing this as the new Mantic stuff keeps getting better.

So I spent some time last night and today messing with the terrain. The sprue of connectors I got with my original box were pretty awful. Took me forever to get them snapped it and I broke a few. The box I just got in had connectors that worked great. Almost no problem. So I guess there is some variation to how well they work. That being said, I glued most of the terrain after I built it, but tried to leave some of it in pieces so I could move it around and make different structures. I've seen some people do some pretty amazing things with this terrain already. Mine is a little more basic but I think it will make for a good game.

Here is what I made JUST with the box I received yesterday. There are some more odds and ends to make barriers with, but these are the buildings I was able to make with the supplement box.

I left the roof unconnected / glued from the base of the building. This will probably come in handy somehow down the road. I can also stack other buildings on the roof to make a taller building and still be able to tear it down. Sorry the pic is a little blurry.

I arranged the terrain on the board to make what I think would be a pretty good gaming area. This is not all the terrain I have made from the two boxes, but is probably 80% to give you an idea.

I've done a little painting on the terrain, but not much or close to done. Thats why the terrain looks different colors... because it is. Its a dark olive green with a brown wash. Then I'm gonna weather the heck out of it.

Now a model eye view of the board.

Finally, I put some models on the board to make it look more like a game.

And thats it for pictures. Hopefully that gives you an idea of what you can do with the terrain. Pretty good stuff. Not perfect, but it looks pretty awesome on the table. Hopefully I will finish those Enforcers tonight and get some more paint on this terrain. Hope you enjoyed, and please feel free to comment. C&C is always welcome!!!

Thanks, Grim. I'm having a ton of fun messing with this stuff. Not trying to rub salt in the wound, just saying. Now, I just need to get some games in.

Have you heard when you should expect your stuff?

Yeah I'm worried I won't get any games in myself. We'll see.

No word on the stuff. I figure whenever they start correcting kickstarter mispacks and otherwise missing items I should hopefully be on the leading edge of that. Full retail release I think is February so surely before that

Ok, one more update before I call it for hobbying tonight. Worked on enforcers some more but they still aren't done. While they were drying i worked on building some Rebs and Marauders. Rebs were easy. Marauders on the other hand... well, I had to do some "hobby surgery" on 3 of the 4 models built. 2 of which were very necessary, one of which was optional. Anyways, enough yammering, here's some pics.

So the greenstuff on the base is simply gonna be painted like a rock. I just can't stand small contact points on bases, so I always try to add some surface area where I can. The greenstuff on the 2nd model from the left is there because there was a HUGE gap between the arm and the gun. I saw no way that was gonna connect, even with the hot water trick, so greenstuff it was. Tried to make it look like an arm band.

The goblin's gun came bent pretty bad. A little hot water later and you can't tell.

The rebs required little to no effort.

And that's it for me tonight. Hope you enjoyed and as always, feel free to comment.

Looking good. /jealous.

I've heard things about the pyro's arm before, I guess it may be a problem with that sculpt. I should have a couple eventually so I'll compare notes then.

I like your building set-up. A couple more small structures or some additional scatter terrain and you should be quite good to go

Those marauders are looking more tempting every time I see them. Are there campaign rules for Dead Zone or is it single skirmishes?

Deadzone is meant to be played as a campaign, Llama. You can definitely just play a single game, but that's not the main point. It's not necromunda style campaigns as far as depth, but it looks like a really good system.

Grim, now that you mention it, I think I had heard that about the pyro. I don't mind doing some work to models, but I think green stuff should be a fun option, not mandatory to make the model function. Oh well.

Thanks Canadian beaver!

I totally agree with you on the greenstuff. I think Mantic still has a way to go in terms of QA, but so far the DZ stuff looks pretty good from afar.

So I didn't get to do too much hobby work this weekend, so just a quick update. I had to go out of town to Richmond to visit some friends. While I was there, however, I stopped by FTW games. They are the same guys that do spikey bits online as well as running the store. Anyways, I was looking around the store and saw some Deadzone stuff, which I thought was pretty cool and I picked up a few of the mercenaries. I had no intention of buying them yet, but I don't have a FLGS, so when I get to go to one, I like to pick some stuff up. Also bought a couple of the new GW technical paints. But the most important purchase was a pot of GW's textured paint in gray, so I can start doing the bases on the models. So here's what I picked up.

And here is the start of the basing project. I'm waiting for the paint to dry now. Not the best pic, but it will look uch better after dry brushing and a wash to help pick out the texture.

Alright Dakka, that's it for tonight. Tomorrow I should FINALLY have those other enforcers up,and some models with finished bases.

Sweet, I hate seeing nicely painted minis on plain bases (unless they're see-through! ), so I'm glad to see you putting the finishing touches on your minis.

I've been finding liquid greenstuff somewhat useful, dunno about the rest of their new stuff. I hear you about buying stuff when you randomly happen by a gamestore, just a couple of weeks ago I wandered around one for a good 30 minutes trying to find something worth buying. I didn't, but I definitely get the sentiment

Looking forward to seeing stuff done!

Yeah, its been driving me insane too having the bases undone. I made it a point to go by the store just so I could get that paint even though it was 1/2 an hour from where I was staying.

I was surprised they had Deadzone stuff. They had one of every starter, the main game, and a few of each merc. They had no terrain boxes, which makes me wonder if they sold all the ones they had already. I really think this terrain is gonna be a big deal in the wargaming community. The game itself, probably not, but I have high hopes for the terrain. We'll see if I'm crazy or not in time I suppose.

Yeah, I think the terrain has a good chance of doing well. If you look on the Infinity site they have something like 4 companies making terrain specifically themed for Infinity, so this may not sway quite as many of those players as I had thought... But it's pretty basic and really versatile.

I think I agree with you about deadzone (not) becoming a craze. It might become a "household name" in that people that play other skirmish/wargames know vaguely what it is by name, but I doubt it's going to steam roll anything unless they really *really* jack up the production value. Look at Corvus Belli's Infinity rule books, look at the DZ book, which is easier or better to play? who cares the Infinity book is diamonds! Gah old spice commercial, will you ever cease being relevant!?

So I finally got around to finishing up my enforcer basic troops. Even got the basing done, which makes a world of difference. I already knew that, but I usually base as I'm painting, so having painted minis around with plain bases was driving me insane. Anyways, here are he basic troops.

And some models from earlier with finished bases as well.

That's all for now. Next I will have some more assembled rebs and marauders. Probably gonna get started on the 1st gen today as well. I have the day off work, so I'm going to try to be "productive" today. Please feel free to leave comments and feedback.

Definitely a solid step up! I like how it turned out, makes the base look kind of like stone or concrete and the stuff on top is some kind of mud/muck/detritus. Overall makes them look like they're in the thick of it.

You could almost slosh some of that stuff up onto their boots and feet, if you were in the mood to weather a little bit

Looking forward to seeing the 1st gen in your color scheme
