Rulebook says if you have a crater you can place it, and craters give 5+ cover saves. So is this possible?

Yes, BRB page 80, under the Effect of Damage on passengers section check the "Explodes" result.

Yes, they may absolutely hide in the crater. Its a good idea to keep a supply of craters around for just such occasions so that you and your opponent can remember this in-game.

Now be carefull that if you want to do this, you have to own some substitute for a crater.

You opponent could make a dick move and say that since you don't have a crater you can't use it, saw it happens a few times.

the easiest way is to find GW or another company clean pictures of craters and print them on photo quality paper and then simply cut the template.

it will avoid a whole world of arguing.

I dont think it'll solve anything because of LoS issues....2d terrain doesnt count in 40k.

I think common sense would prevail most of the time

The crater doesn't have to block LOS, it simply provides a set cover save for being in area terrain (scattered wreckage - area terrain).
BRB "Models in area terrain receive a 5+cover save, regardless of whether or not they are 25% obscured."

Get a whole pack of the mini-aluminum pie pans and crunch them into a crater shape. perfect size and shape. Only problem is paint doesnt stick well so be sure to prime them well. Check out threads in the painting section here. We have a few going on the matter.

With textured paint, like the spraycans GW had a few years ago for their tables( can't remember if they still exists), could make the trick.
