Can someone help me understand the meaning of this sentence:

Page 26 BRB, right hand side, 3rd paragraph, 2nd sentence: "Neither do wounds in excess of a model's Wounds characteristic [count toward determining who won the combat]"

...huh? That doesn't make sense to me. Doesnt a multi-wound model keep having to pass armor saves till it loses all its wounds, and then further wounds from the wound pool get transferred to the next model in the unit etc.?

E.g. if an Ogryn suffered 4 unsaved wounds - which can only happen when you're using the Fast Dice method - the 4th would get auto-transferred to the next Ogryn. Otherwise such a scenario would never pop up if you rolled saves individually, as a model could then never sustain more wounds than its Wounds characteristic.

The only scenario where the sentence would make sense is if a single unit consisting of, say, Commander Farsight (who only has 2 wounds left from previous battle damage), would suffer 3 unsaved wounds, while the Daemon Prince he had charged had received 3 unsaved wounds in turn. Therefore Farsight would win the close combat (3 inflicted wounds vs 2 sustained wounds) but HE IS DEAD anyway, so the Daemon Prince wins the round.

It works for challenges.

If you cause 10 wounds on a sergeant, 9 wounds will be lost.
This will only count as 1 wound for determining who won the combat.

Yup. Just one more reason why Challenges are very poorly implemented in 40K. Why should I challenge that P-fist Sgt with only one wound when I have a character that can kill half the Sgt's squad all by himself? And force a very nasty morale check?

It also applies to multi-unit combats.

becasue if you don't he will challenge you and if you refuse you will not get to make any attacks at all.

challenges are implimented perfectly fine, they work in the same manner as they do in fantasy which if you have plaed it you will make the trasnition easilly.

if not, its a simple concept, for this round of the assualt the two characters are engrosed in each other to the exclusion of all else, only one will theoretically walk away from this (although it is possible that one will run away before it is resolved).

It's handy to have a lowly sergeant throw out a challenge, so that powerfist will only score one kill instead of several.

Because some people play CSM and must challenge. Our the character is all by his lonesome and must accept said challenge.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Sometimes a challenge can be beneficial, since you rarely want to wipe out an enemy unit on the charge. This is one way in which you can limit the lethality of your beat stick commander while still doing something effective.

Where it falls down is when you have a unit with multiple disposable characters like an IG blob.

I wish Lookout, Sirs (but on 5+) were allowed in challenges. That would really balance things out.
