I am sure that they can do it, what with the 3+ save and the anger. Which chapters do it best? What is the best list for an assault list?

Black Templars are cool, giving you the option to take close combat and bolt pistol crusader squads, I'm just not a fan of cc power armour models on foot, and the options to get them close can be costly (Land raider and Stormraven) or are not an assault vehicle(drop pods). White scars bikers have a Hammer of wrath bonus but might be out numbered and Raven Guard make assault marines better but most people will say that bikes are better than jump packs.

That's just what I hear people say. I may be wrong

assault marines, vanguard vets, turn 1 drop pod assault, hammernators, LRC bearing assault centurions, crusader squads, the potential is there. but 6th ed and overwatch and vehicle assault shenanigans mitigate it.

I was actually thinking of turning to forgeworld rule sets for Red Scorpions as a viable choice. You lose out on the extra ccw, but in return all tact squads gain an apothocary, plus you have the librarian from their chapter who gets to outright choose his powers. Sounds pretty good to me =/. Mantis Warriors also have their libby and furious charge from cover.

I've been trying to work out a Black Templars chapter tactic list but I can't justify 500 points (and the real cost) for two landraiders and the squads to put inside, was also trying to fit a Chaptermaster with the Shield eternal on foot, I don't really like spacemarine bikes, but it just adds up to too much for what it's worth, unless someone on here has had good luck with that, please let me know.

Are the ones you mentioned from the Badab war book Piroko?

I'd use just jump packs, for the speed to get into combat, and the HoW attack.

But, at their cost they're outclassed by almost every other codex.
Assault Marine squads aren't (usually) scoring, so need troops alongside them. If you do that, get ccw Scouts in LSSs.
Chaplain and Librarian could be good, but subjective and expensive.

I've not worked it through yet, so don't know which CT to take with them.

Charcarodons (is that spelt right?) seem the best on paper. Same option for ccw & bp as templars but also have the potential for rage and +1s army wide.
If going mantis warriors remember you have access to divination too.
Loth for red scorps can be a close combat monster if you go biomancy. Never seen it used irl but made a thread about it recently and others have.

Chappys suck. Compared to the old BT dex wherein they were monsters, they are sickly old men with AP4 wooden sticks in the new one. Their force multiplier is actually BAD, because it increases the chance of your unit wiping out the unit it charged and then sitting ducks for the entirety of the next enemy turn, shooting phase included.

That being said, drop poding in crusader squads is cheaper than buying a Land Raider for them (and much, much safer than putting them in a rhino)

I think they are, but forgeworld is also offering them on their site in a pdf download for free.

I also decided on changing red scorpions to Iron hands. Iron hands chapter master and captain on bikes with relics is silly. They have the longevity to be a thorn in peoples sides and the hitting power to make it really hurt. Still doing mantis warriors librarian with a group of honor guard though (mirage is sick and my allies are Assassin's Creed based)
