What major sci-fi video game IP would make the best 28mm tabletop wargame? There are a lot of options out there!

Halo might make an interesting skirmish game.

Command and Conquer is pretty much perfect, the armies have all the classic unit types that you'd expect from a wargame, and the setting and terrain would be very cool.

Plus, RTS kinda feels like the PC version of wargaming anyway.

In many ways, Dropzone Commander already has the feel of Command and Conquer.

Halo would be the obvious choice for me. Only 3 factions (UNSC, Covenant, Prometheans, and I suppose you chould chuck in human rebels if you wanted to) so you'd have plenty of ability to make each range dynamic and varied.

I think it would make a very nice skirmish game, a la Deadzone, if you wanted to represent the feel of the actual game (with weapon swaps, usable upgrades/abilities ect), and with the number and variety of vehicles and fliers it could upscale nicely to a squad-based mass battle system.

I think Assassin's Creed would make an interesting one, a game focusing on stealth and cunning is not something I think is on the market at all. It would almost work as a single-player narrative-based game, with AI for guards and civilians based on cards or dice tables. I think it would have to be narrative-based, though, and I'm not sure it would work as a multiplayer affair trying to balance 1 guy against a dozen (if we go by the game itself). It would still make a very cool boxed game though, and the opportunity for truly 3d gaming over a board that would have to be full of terrain would be cool.

In terms of Other, Fracture has potential given the unique playstyle focus on altering terrain. I'm not sure how you'd go about representing it in-game, but it could end up being very cool, particularly as a skirmish.

I think Halo (from the list above) would be the best for a full size tabletop wargame

Fallout would make a decent skirmish sized game

There's many there that I'd like to see a model range for, metal Gear Solid and command and conquer being two of them.
But I think for a game, the wide diversity of races in Mass Effect would make it the perfect choice, and I already know who I'd choose,
the Reapers, and the Geth, just imagine how good they'd look on the table top .

Command and Conquer Probably, specifically Red Alert 2 + Yuris Revenge. 3 factions with loads of different fun units and the mind controlling the other teams army could be amusing!

Fallout would be an excelent skyrmish game: plenty of factions and different "races", with a very nice excuse for teams to go around and fight each other...

I'd say xcom but deadzone is fairly close to that already. If I could vote twice it would be mass effect and assassins creed, both would make neat skirmish games. I'll throw in for mass effect though.

I think these would all be cool in practice and look but sicne I have a NOD symbol tattooed on my leg were going to go with C&C. I remember seeing some sort of trial stage of 28mm minis a few years ago that I think someone was trying to start/pitch but I dont know how far/how serious all that was

Fallout is my favourite video game series of all time, but I can't see it as a tabletop wargame. I was thinking only just recently, "Why don't they have a Halo Tabletop Wargame?"

I think Halo would do well if you went with the fluff over trying to replicate multiplayer.

Wizkids already did a table top Halo based around Multiplayer. It was fun in it's own right, but I'd rather see something a little different (WK version basically ignored a lot of stuff to stream line it into a clix based game).

I'm not a big Mass Effect fan, but a sort of pulpy style future skirmish game based on a ship crew could work for a more niche style game.

I think in order to work, it should enable faceless or random people and not just be limited to main characters. Hence I think Metal Gear would be a bit poor in this regards.

What about Lost Planet? Mostly humans with a few mecha vs the Akrids?

Alternatively, if you wanted near future, I think Battlefield 2142 would be fun.

I'd also love Starsiege: Tribes. Small squads of mobile troopers duking it out. Diamond Sword, Blood Eagle, Children of the Phoenix, Starwolf, Imperial, Bioderms. It could even upscale to include some Starsiege stuff and include the Cybrids.

It'd be a bit boring, the two main factions are identical, one is in red armour the other is in black armour.

I guess it would save on tooling costs.

They already have a halo and mgs table top variation for Risk!

Fallout had a rts called Fallout:Tactics. It had online play that allowed several factions to fight each other. The factions I think were Vault Dwellers & Brotherhood of Steel, Reavers & Enclave, Ghouls & Super Mutants, Raiders, Deathclaws, Automotron computers. However I never got to play the online portion, but from what I was able to play with in the online options, I found out it was a point cost per unit similar to building a small squad in wh40k or xcom: enemy unknown. Also you were not restricted to only play 1 race. for example you can have a team with a super mutant, deathclaw, robot, and a brotherhood of steel.

A Fallout tabletop game is not restricted to an established rts series. It could be a game focused on gathering resources instead of just kill all and holding locations. I can imagine it being a boxed game ready to play like wh40k relic. The fallout series is not a serious grimdark setting so it should have some satirical and parody elements and easter eggs. For example, when your troops gather resources from a junk yard, they may find the Holy Hand Grenade! Or when crossing a bridge, there could be a chance to encounter a man with riddles.

This is a stretch and it wasn't a game but a show. Space: Above and Beyond for any who remember it. Hammerhead ships and Chigs. Now that would be fun! Now strictly speaking of Sci-Fi games, how about the old X-Com?

Actually that would be pretty cool. One side is human, other side is alien. Both sides go through the whole tech and research arms race thing and there's the occasional attack on a base or two.

Halo's great flaw was it trying to be multiplayer and not really translating the various models well (no shields on Spartans, for example, or ODST being worse than regular marines). That, and Wizkids has been pretty lackluster pushing more than just Halo (Crimson Skies was a brilliant game that they put nothing behind, as an example). When your only way to stay in business is to crank out new figures, a property like Halo becomes a bit problematic when you make almost everything in the first set.

With the amount of fluff already out there, and the fluff that we will definitely see in the future, they would never be able to pull it off. Sometimes, I look at WH40K on the tabletop and the models and think, "Why hasn't someone like Games Workshop made a game like this?" The mechanics of wh40k would be very easily transferable, translating perfectly into the universe. Plus, the ODSTs already provide Steeeel Rehn effectively enough. Now, slightly alter the cover mechanics and shields, add special rules and a codex or 2, and you have yourself a Halo Tabletop Wargame worthy of the name.

I'm with eisensapper on xcom!

Command and conquer could be fun, especially if they could harness any of the base-building elements for the tabletop.

Mass effect and fallout would make cracking quest-style small-scale squad based rpg's.
