Subject: Hello from a really really new guy

Guarded Grey Knight Terminator

Hello,
I am Mike.
I am new here (obvious). But i mean really new. So new I don't actually nor have i played a game of Warhammer 40k, or any game of this sort before. I've seen it played at various comic shops and always thought it looked like a lot of fun, but funding always prevented me from starting.
So when I say I am new, that is how new I am. I come from a back ground of other nerdy hobbies and would witness this game when I would go to my local comic shop to play magic tournaments.
Recently I have had a renewed interest in joining the game but this time I have funding to start. Very exciting.
I've spent the last few weeks reading the lore of the game and the different armies to try to land on who I would like to begin with. I know there is the dark vengeance starter box, but neither army in the box interested me. I've come across 2 armies that i really enjoyed reading about and just look awesome. The Grey Knights and the Tyranids.
The reasoning behind these 2 really seats with video gaming/rpg characters I have chosen in the past. In all rpg's my default character tends to be a paladin, or some lawful/good type warrior which really connected me with the Grey knights. On the other hand, i really enjoy zerg in startcraft so I connected with tyranids in that way. Both have amazing looking models and just fit the style of armies I think I would enjoy playing.
The only reason I am against the starter box is I don't want to really start either of those armies and just have those figurines sitting around.
I've read a bit of concerns about both armies.
Grey Knights- From what I read, people think they are cheesy and overpowered? Is this a true case? I just don't want to start showing up at my local gaming shop and be 'that guy.' I would like the fun to be had by both players. Also, how close does the play of grey knights feel to the play of space marines? I also read that space marines make up most players, and I don't want to add to more space marines (i like to be different).
Tyranids - I also read that these guys have a steep learning curve and can be difficult for a newbie to start. Is it too difficult to start as a brand new player? Are they actually as fun as they look to play?
Hello community and thanks for having me.
-Mike

Welcome to Dakka.
Grey Knights are the cheaper option in terms of money, as there are fewer units. Grey Knights certainly aren't overpowered, and are a good start to have as they're quite straight forward for beginners.
Tyrannids, not an expert. Though they can be tricky I think and require a lot of models.

Welcome. If the people at your local game store are willing, see if they'll let you run some units during one of their games. This is the way I was introduced to fantasy a long time ago and is a low cost way of getting a feel for the rules and various units. After you settle on an army, you can try to play them as an allied contingent for another player.
For your first figures, go to ebay and see what kind of deals you can score.

Just go with what you like the looks of. Grey knights are cool as hell. And tyranids are a real swarm army, or big monster army. Not played either, but I've been trounced by both before. Once you start with one army though, you will find yourself playing others. I've been Imperial Guard for a long time, but not long after starting those I'd built up a small Waaaagh! Warhammer isn't so much a hobby as an obsession for most.

Hey welcome!
I say go Grey Knights. You like the story behind them, and in RPGs (games with more involvement and character assessment) you played paladins and LG. Starcraft is a lot of fun, but you arent crafting the characters like you do in WH40k. Expect to come up with your own names for some of the grey knight characters.
Also, you can get a really nice Grey Knight army for very little expenses, and even less time painting. A Tyranid army will require quite a few models, and a lot of time painting all of them. So go with Grey Knights, get your force together, play some games and see how you like it. If you are still totally loving the game and the Tyranids, then go for them later.
Also, if you like playing the righteous stubborn guy, check out some Black Templar fluff. They are on an Eternal Crusade and really use more of the medieval chivalry nomenclature than a lot of other armies.

I think Grey Knights were condsidered extremely powerful back in 5th but now are a little more reasonable. I'd say go with the knights.
