InControl takes the new Skyblight Tyranid Formation out in a game against JY2's tournament winning Cron Air Necrons in an 1850pt battle!

Nicely done.

BTW, these were our lists:

Dakka flyrant
Dakka flyrant
Dakka flyrant

Tervigon
30 Termagants - 8 Devourers

10 Gargoyles
10 Gargoyles
10 Gargoyles

Hive Crone
Hive Crone

Harpy (HVC)
Harpy (Stranglethorn)

Geoff went more with the units that he (and the store....and I) had and also units that he was more familiar with. His psychic powers included 1 Catalyst, 2 Onslaughts, 2 Psychic Screams and Dominion on the tervie.

This was my list:

D-lord - 2+, MSS, ResOrb
D-lord - 2+, MSS

2x5 Gauss Immortals in Night Scythes
2x5 Warriors in Night Scythes

3x5 Wraiths

3 Annihilation Barges

For the record, I've only lost twice with my Necrons ever since 6th Ed. came out (before this game). Back in 5th, I believe I only lost once with my wraithwing or MTO necrons (ironically, that was against Reece's Tyranids back in 5th). However, I do have some losses with my more casual, non-Wraithwing/MTO necrons.

I still had a chance to win it at the end. I only needed to kill 1 more gargoyle. However, my warriors hit 6 times and I only manage to wound twice (needed to wound at least thrice). Oh well, not one of my greatest games dice-wise, though in all fairness, Geoff played great and my D-lords did get back up I believe 4 times.

In any case, Skyblight Nids are going to dominate the Tournament scene, especially if people play it the way we did in this game (where you CANNOT contest the gargoyles at all). You will see them up there on the top tables. You will even see them win tournies. They are like last years screamer/flamer-spam Tzeentch Daemons before they got updated by the new Daemon codex. Yes, they are THAT good.

The double satisfaction of watching the much-disparaged Nids wreck a tournament winning list. Strange that I can root for hideous unfeeling monsters as the underdog.

Lmao at Geoff's comments they were relentless! Outstanding battle report as the Nids show they are back at the top of the pack. I'm going to try this list as soon as I get the models but instead of a third flyrant I'm going to try the death leaper to shut down a lot of shenanigans.

The gargoyles can be contested by denial units that don't score.

"All Gargoyle units from this Formation have the Objective Secured special rule. A unit with this special rule controls Objective Markers even if an enemy scoring unit is within range of the Objective Marker, unless the enemy unit also has this special rule."

Very well played game by InControl... Impressive !

I think I'd take more gargoyles and another flyer over that Terv and 30 Gants.

That would be 3 Tyrants and 6 Harpies/Crones w/ more Gargs that have that incredible scoring rule and a chance to come back on a 4+.

Gargs also have blind which is really good.

I'm glad you're actually trying something else other than triple-flyrants. This will also make the army a little easier to play against for the majority of the more "average" armies. Dealing with triple-flyrants can be a real b*tch.

That seems to be the gist of it, though in our game, we just simplified it and played it as "they cannot be contested. Period." What can I say....I'm a sado who likes to challenge myself.

That's ok. Just make sure you have a resilient source of Synapse in the backfield. I cannot stress enough how important Synapse in the backfield is, especially when most players will have to play their flyrants aggressively.

6 harpies/crones is just overkill. It is not always good to have too much of 1 (or 2) things. That will also be the downfall of Skyblight players if they don't have a solid foundation on the ground for their armies. It's the same reason why a pure CronAir Necron army with 9 flyers isn't winning any tournament (instead, it's the wraithwing builds who are winning) or why a 9-vendetta IG Air Cav army isn't dominating. You MUST have a solid ground force to complement your air force.

Jy2 this nid list does have a solid ground presence, the fmc can land anytime and assault as was demonstrated in the video, that's what makes them so good, I'm on my 5th game with the skyblight swarm and thus far even serp spam and screamers are feeling the hurt.

The Tervigon and Gants are his two mandatory Troops choices. Just because the Gargoyles score doesn't mean they count as Troops. Also Jim I think running the Deathleaper is pretty TAC as if you roll the -3 on the Seer who has Fortune you can mess that up that unit pretty quickly once you get everything into Shadows range. It works well on just about any Psyker Character and you can even use it just to mess with the highest Leadership of a unit like an IG Blob Squad. On top of that he can be a backfield disruption unit causing your opponent to rethink deployment. The list i'm thinking of running is as follows:

Dakka Flyrant
Dakka Flyrant
Deathleaper
Tervigon w/Glands and Shreddershard Beetles
Gants x30
Gargoyles x10
Gargoyles x10
Gargoyles x10
Harpy
Harpy
Crone
Zoanthrope
Venomthrope
Biovores x3

Yeah, it's strong. This army is going to catch a lot of people by surprise.

When I say ground presence, I am talking about more than just FMC's landing on the ground in an offensive role. I am talking about good support units that will also double as force-multipliers to make the army even better. Like the tervigon providing for a strong backfield synapse and also locking down the Relic. Like the venomthrope giving his FMC's 2+ cover behind ruins (I should have killed both flyrants on my T3 and maybe more if not for the 2+ cover they were getting). Zoans giving synaptic relief and psychic powers. The bastion providing 3+ cover or LOS-blocker in the case Tyranids go 2nd. Trygons providing another strategic location (closer to objectives) for respawning gargoyles to come in other than the board edge. Etc. These are the little things - the force-multiplying effects of your complementary support units - that will make a great army even better. In any case, I am a firm believer of army synergy and force-multiplying effects over pure offense, but I guess in time we will see which type of army wins out. Against most armies, you won't really see much of a difference as both are good enough to beat most armies. However, where I think you will see the difference most is against high-level opponents playing top-tier armies.

Don't get me wrong. The Deathleaper is really good as a force-multiplyer unit. I just think that the flyrant is better as an all-around unit and against a wider range of armies, especially the armies who don't care about LD shenanigans. But the army you will be running is still a very strong one as well.

Seeing those batrep, it seems like 6ed 40K is now all about taking liberties with the force organisation, through allies, and now formations. I like the idea in a sense, as those nids formations gives us a lot of possibilities to build up a diverse and interesting list, but at the same time it bothers me somehow.

The Skyblight Formation gives you a Flyrant without using a Force Org. spot. The only army I can think of that really doesn't care about Leadership are Necrons and most Space Marines.

Jy2 although you seem to be a nice person, i root against you everytime and feel justified in doing so. Being a dark angel only player its nice to see my nemesis (wriathwing necrons) feel the hurt. I'm glad that the maligned tyranids seem to have a couple of viable builds with the newest dataslate. i do feel however that we just witnessed a meta shift in this game and like the resilience of necrons which can be hard to deal with i feel that tyranids are about to explode.

as an aside i think this is a good example of how GW buisness strategy needs an update. I recently read on feait 212 that after polling customers, a survey found that buyers buy models for their looks over their rules. that may be true up to a point but when buying hordes of models is made so palatable by effective rules more people are likely to buy more models. before this data slate people might have had a few gargoyles or flying monsterous creatures, now they are likely to buy more and its entirely due to the rule set.

A great match, and I am glad to see that the Tyranids did so well. That being said, I am really curious about what would have happened in the early game had Geoff not run his fliers off the board. With the numbers he had, and with the scythes not coming on that next turn, I find it more than likely that most of the wraithes would have been quickly destroyed.

That being said, even though Reecius was not there, It seems like he had a hand in the game in spirit, fouling up dice roles left, right, and center. You guys might want to get some virgin dice that he hasn't touched.

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

I recommend for all who watch these FrontLineGaming batreps, that you make a "Guess When the Noisy Bus Drives By" and note your time before watching.

Just for bragging rights. I anticipated it a lot earlier than 19:42, though. Bonus: We get to actually see it drive by!

InControl, man, you do a great play-by-play game-call.

Jim, it's good to see your 'Crons lose.

So at the moment sky blight has the edge over living artillery? I've watched both reps and I have to say the way that LA tore apart Tau really impressed me (and I love carnifexes). If the rumours of a new edition are true then I imagine a shift away from flyers and FMC may be on the cards. Maybe it's just me though.

Thanks for sharing this rep guys, always enjoy it when you guys post!

Well played, Jim and Geoff! You guys played a great game.

I thought it any list would be able to take Skyblight, it would be Jim's Crons.

I honestly wonder if Skyblight is TOO much. It may be OP, we need to try it against a normal army and see if it is even a game.

Yea I am with you on the OP assessment. TBH this isn't a meta switch if it isn't allowed and I am not certain it will be. It will be interesting to see what the major GT's allow and don't allow.

I agree. Marine bike lists can pack 3 Stalkers fairly easy. The Stalkers already help vs Heldrakes. If this bug list starts popping up, then it wouldn't take much to take 3 Stalkers.
