Hi Dakkadakka,

So I'm playing my first 100 point game of X-Wing this Thursday and after seeing what my local game store had to offer for purchase sort of ended up with this list. I could also buy a falcon or a HWK 290.

Rookie + R5-8D
Rookie + R5-8D
Rookie + R5-8D
Dutch + R5-K6

So pretty much no A-Wings or B-Wings that I've seen people posting on their youtube channels.

yeah,
X and Y wings are great ships and I recommend that people new to the game start with those.

You can make some great squadrons. Don't be afraid to try some 3 ship lists.
While your learning squadron building try and squeeze wedge into your lists if you can , he's a monster!

Garven and Dutch are a cool combo as they work together soevery turn they both have focus and Target lock.
Even better if they have torpedoes!

R5 D8 is a unique character so you can only take one of those. (unique assets have the dot before the name)

Ah, ok. Gotchya. How about this then? It leaves me with 1 point left.

Wedge
Garven
Rookie
Dutch

Basically no upgrades. What do you all think of the Ion Cannon Turret on the Y-Wing? I have no where to put it without dropping to a lesser pilot somewhere. It "sounds" like a default choice for the Y-Wing.

So far I've only used the y with a turret. It's really useful with one.

I could drop dutch down to a gold squad pilot. That would give me the points I need. Kind of a big hit though...

I find the y a bit cumbersome to fly. Having the turret is invaluable, because you don't need to be facing an opponent to fire at them. Also, an r2 astromech is great, because it helps keep the stress off for focus etc.

yeah,
Wedge,Garven ,Rookie and Dutch .
I've flown this before its quite good although I agree a turret would be nice.
have a go with it and see if you like it.

For another game you could drop the rookie and have some fun with upgrades.
It's nice changing lists up quickly between games, as complete changes can waste too much time.

For game nights I've gotten into the habbit of bringing two lists with me.
And I have the cards all gathered up ready to go before I arrive at the store.

Welcome to the game Necron99, love the wizard avatar by the way. I like this XXXY list. Try it out! The one point wouldn't be wasted on a single R2 astromech for Wedge or Determination as a second best option. Happy hunting!

Hhhmmmm...I think you're right about dropping an X-Wing and upgrading everyone else. I also found in my wanderings a very nice list builder at http://xwing-builder.co.uk/build

So here's my new list. Any suggestion for better upgrades would be greatly appreciated:

Garven + R2-D2 + Torpedoes (34)
Wedge + R2 Astromech + Torpedoes + Marksmanship (37)
Dutch + R2 Astromech + Ion Cannon (29)

I currently own the starter set + an X-Wing + Y-Wing so that's kinda all I have to work with this week Suggestions for my next purchase that would get me additional useful cards or ships?

@KnuckleWolf - Yeah, the avatar works well since I play necrons in the 40k world

Yeah,
For rebels, If your only buying one expansion pack.
I'd say BXYA in that order.

I fully recommend a second starter set for the Xwing plus dice plus a second set of movement templates.

I'd go with B-A-X-Y for further buys because of what you already have.

Yes, the B-wing should be next. It offers things no other ship can do.

I'd go with the A-wing next because they are great missile boats and you don't have one yet...so contrary to what Panic recommends...I wouldn't buy a 3rd X-wing or 2nd Y-wing until you have an A-wing available.

And after that I think the X wing should be third.

After this, I'd go with a second B-wing or third X-wing over a second Y-wing.

Two B-wings. B-B-X-X is a very strong rebel list, and B-wings are just awesome in general. I wouldn't bother with the A-wing unless you need official copies of all of the cards (PTL, specifically), A-wings are pretty weak right now and don't see much use outside of a "cheapest possible ship" role that is about to be replaced by the Z-95.

Just ran your original XXXY list today. Found that it's good, but maybe in need of polish? I'm trying an A-wing in place of the Rookie to see if some upgrades don't help it out. Leery about doing that, but the first initial pass was GLORIOUS and the mid and late game went well to, just the Rookie died a little quick. Some pilot errors on my part lost it but strong choices could make it.

Like the new list. I guess with Dutch Torpedoes on both X's makes sense, and I know you have the turret, but wouldn't Garven's Torp maybe go better on Dutch? Give Dutch and Wedge that first salvo at range three, then close in and open up the turret on them at closer range. This way any Lock-ons Dutch gets after pass one are icing on a cake. If I take Torpedoes or Missiles I like to get rid of them fast in game so if I lose a carrier I don't lose the investment. Personal oppinion. Also make sure you don't waste them on small fry, try to get them onto the ships that will be strongest for your opponents late game. Like high agility targets like Stealthed Interceptors or TIE Advanced's, especially Vader. Or Luke Skywalker if your in a tourney mirror match. Stick them with their crappy ships and your stronger more skilled pilots will have a much easier time of it. Godspeed!

The new "Rebel Aces" kit allows A-wings to drop their cost by 2 points, with no downside! They even include 2 copies of the card even though there is only 1 A-wing in the kit. It's like a faq\errata in a box .

the downside is they lose missiles. and the new missiles look to be promising.

But Rebel Aces won't be out for a long time, and it comes with the A-wing. I guess you might buy a single standard A-wing for the pilot cards, but I wouldn't bother with actually using them or buying multiple copies until the expansion is released. It's a nice thought for the future, but not very useful for someone trying to figure out what they're doing now.

(And obviously my quoted comment was posted before the new A-wing upgrades were revealed, so it was correct at the time.)

It fills the A-Wing's missile slot.

yeah,
To me I concider a naked Aq-ing 2 pts cheaper and if I take a missile they cost 2 points more!
It's like this card corrects the cost of a A-wings but feths up the cost of a A-wing taking a missile...

I plan to start playing with Chardaan Refit as soon as the next time I fly an A-Wing. That said, it won't be in a tournament either and the folks I game with are reasonable and fun. I could understand being turned away from a tournament setting, of course, with the explanation that the card may change between now and publication.

Indeed, your advice was spot on. I had both threads open at the time and checked the time stamps to see if the information was relevant to the discussion about expanding his force. However, I incorrectly assumed the card was a modification or a title, and not a "missile"; a very interesting way to edit the A-wings cost effectiveness, and hopefully a precedent for other ships as well.

As to the OP, even with just 4 ships (3X, 1Y) the game system offers a fair bit of diversity with potential balanced lists that play differently from one another. If you have some friends that you can regularly play multiple casual games at a time with, don't be afraid to try whatever assortment of pilots and upgrades that you can put together as you learn the game. If it's available to you, the falcon will allow you to use a dramatically different play style to freshen up the game after you have been playing for awhile.

Tried the XXXY modified to the XXAY list again today. Bad rolls, yeah, still out matched, also yeah. I want to drop Wedge to see if the extra points do anything since Garven/Dutch is the main focus. I did stumble on a trick some may already know, others may not, If wedge has Swarm Tactics and Garven is nearby with Dutch mixed in, Dutch and Wedge Target Lock, Dutch gives a free Lock to Garven who focuses, Wedge tells Garven to shoot first with Target Lock and Focus, Garven passes the focus to Wedge who shoots with Target Lock and Focus, Dutch fires Ion with Target Lock. One super spooky turn or two is obviously not enough

:(
