Interesting puff piece. I laughed when they were talking about people losing sleep over this. I was down in New Orleans after Katrina, and they had rats big enough to ride roller coasters.

I love how the family cat essentially said "feth no!" to dealing with that rat. Smart cat.

Sure its big, but its hardly "Ratzilla"

I've seen bigger ones crawling around in my parents barn eating chicken feed.

I also find nothing unusual with this rat. Saw plenty of roughly the same size in my life.

The rat that was talking to me (well, I talked, the rat stood on its hindlegs and made a variety of noises in reply) in broad daylight just outside my flat one day, now THAT was scary.

This feels like a stupid question but does Europe have larger rats than the United States? I haven't seen any here that are bigger than maybe 6-9 inches in length.

Not counting New Orleans. Swamps and such breed monsters.

I love how they finally killed it with an "oversized trap". It's just so cartoonish but when you think about it perfectly reasonable. bigger rat...bigger trap!

That's not impossibly large-I used to bullseye womp-rats in my T-16 back home. They make it to about three meters. What were we talking about again?

Well, they could shorten the trip and head to D.C. where a sizable population of Chicago rats have taken up.

That would be the Coypu or Nurtia, things can get to the size of a beaver. They get up to 20-25lbs and are not even the biggest rodent in the world. The biggest is the Capybara with a average weight of 100+lbs.

Not that spectacularly sized really, but outside the realm of most peoples' experience. I've had pet rats close to that size myself, about 12 inches plus tail.

Don't blame the cat for wanting nothing to do with it though

NYC rats are pretty huge, especially the inflatable ones...

I think the US actually has worse rat problems than Europe, the most common rat in the US and Europe are Norway rats, what Europe doesn't have (to my knowledge) is things like the Gambian pouched rat which were imported at one point as pets and are now breeding in the NYC subway system... they grow up to 3 feet long...

We have the same kind of rat as Europe does. The Brown or Norway rat. Smaller black rats exist too, but the Browns tend to eat them.

It depends entirely on the food supply. The biggest rats will have the best food supply, and actually be healthier.

So a big rat isn't actually as much of a health concern as a bunch of small rats. It likely won't have diseases(other than fleas)

Actually, that is purely based off numbers. A larger rat will be less likely to come into contact with disease, but the sheer mass is the main problem of rats.

Also, that is why rats get so big in cities such as NYC. This is not an insult, but there is quite a litter problem in Manhattan from what I recall of my visits...

It is NOT a little problem, but the big rats tend not to be brown/norway rats, rather they are other exotic species that got loose from someones apartment.
