There was also points for army balance, sportsmanship and army painting as well as a best painted model competition. Also just so you're aware we have a few house rules. Heavy/Special weapons can shoot at a different unit as long as it's in a troops choice is the only one that came into play here. We also weren't using any mysterious terrain/objectives.

CSM round 1 overview:

We rolled off for deployment, got the long map, and we decided to pick the side of the board that had a river going right across the end of our deployment zone and to go first. We decided the river was dangerous terrain. There was two bridges going across so we put two rhinos on one and one rhino and the bikes on the other. Havocs and Predator stayed back with an objective as we rolled Big Guns Never Tire. The seize the initiative was failed so we moved all the rinos up 12" and popped smoke to stack with the night fighting. The bikes moved flat out and ended the turn an inch away from the Tau warlord. The cultists were deployed in the river as I figured I could lose a few no problem rather than start them behind the rhinos and walk over the bridge. Out of 20 dangerous terrain tests I rolled eleven ones. ELVEN ONES! Not a good start... Leadership test passed though. The havocs and quad gun fired at some stealth suits that had infiltrated into some woods and managed to take out one of the three, while the predator took a hull point from the hammerhead.

All four bikers were killed from just about everything firing at them, giving the other team first blood. 0 - 1 to Tau/IG. They got hit by the pathfinders markerlights which I didn't realise could remove the cover save from the bikes so they got hit pretty hard by some crisis suits. But they're job was done, the warlord survived and only one rhino was hit, and immobilised, due to them being the focus. Next turn the Biker Lord went straight after the Tau commander who rolled three ones on his assault jump move. The sorcerers rhino failed it's repair and the marines disembarked, using the rhino to block LOS from the enemy tanks as they fired at the remaining stealth suits, taking no wounds. The cultists were right at the stealth suits though and even though they were assaulting through cover they didn't take any wounds and finished them off. The Heldrake and Raptors had both arrived by this point. The Heldrake consumed an entire pathfinder team with his baleflamer, while the Raptors destroyed the battle cannon on the Leman Russ holding an objective. The other rhinos moved up and shot their flamers from the roof, killing a guard squad while the other moved towards the objective that was in the middle of the board. The Biker Lord survived the overwatch and slayed the Tau warlord with his murder sword, but remained locked in combat after their challenge (I forgot the chaos boon roll :( ). 1 - 1.

The enemy managed to take two hull points from the Heldrake next turn, whilst killing one of the melta raptors. One rhino lost two hull points, but only from glances. The immobilised rhino wasn't enough cover for the marines and the hammer head managed to kill two of them. Another set of three crisis battlesuits arrived in midfield with a deep strike but the quad gun intercepted them, managing to kill one but they passed their leadership test. They managed not to take any hull points from the Helbrute who had only just crossed the bridge at this point, and was looking hungry. The next turn he opened fire, instantly killing one but failing his charge due to an imobilising overwatch. The havocs then managed to finish off a squad of guardsmen while the predator failed to do any more damage to the hammer head. The raptors however were able to make it explode with the remaining melta gun to it's rear armour. 2 - 1 to Chaos. The Heldrake managed to remove a squad of fire warriors from play but was then brought down by the battlesuits. The Chaos Lord who mad moved towards the suits was also cut down by a rapid firing squad of fire warriors who had arrived from reserve right beside him. 2 - 2. The rest of the chaos units were unaffected.

Having lost a hull point the Helbrute was forced to fire twice, removing the last deep striking battlesuit from play. The rhinos moved into position and unloaded onto the enemies home and midfiled objective killing off the remaining enemy troops. The raptors moved back to the Leman Russ removing it from play with another melta shot. 3 - 2 to Chaos. The enemy team at this point conceded the game. With line breaker and 3 objectives Chaos won 13 - 2. A decisive victory.

Round two report coming soon...
