Ok,
so what I did was I escaped the wife taking my 4 year old with me to a long distance trip to Westminster (in London uk) where my favorite warhammer discount shop is located. My promise was to not spend over 30 pounds or else I would be in trouble.
I turned up and found out they had moved location - luckily someone told me they had only moved like 4 roads up but that was like walking for 30 mins with my son drilling a hole into my head about getting on another bus to travel in.
Found the shop, and I got a bit happy and could feel the adrenaline kicking in I stretched my promise to 36 pounds and asked for them to bring me a land raider redeemer/crusader. I thought sweet. Its fine and a decent discount from an official GW store. Something in the back of my head however went into over drive and made me automatically demand a sternguard squad. that shifted me to the 50 pound barrier. I felt tense but nothing I could do. I was in line waiting to pay and up came the paints....I thought dammit I need some washing which have no been discontinued by citadel but I could remember that army painter had an equivalent the strong and low tones plus another blood red vellejo pot as my blood angels would need another booster paint soon.
The then unexpected happened.......the girl at the till opens her mouth and says if I spend another retail value of 20 pounds I would qualify for a 25% discount and not the standard 20% one. Well when I heard this my mouth just opened again and demanded she bring me a squad of death company assault marines......WELL my friends that took me to a new total of 77 pounds with retail value of something like 108. I thought it was a great deal but then my trip home my mind was thinking....how is the best way to tell me wife....
in the end there was no best way to tell the wife and I have been banned for a year to approach any game stores or ebay for searches. She barely allowed me to post on the forum as that was on her list too - to strip me from anything GW hobby related...
anyways what do you think of my new purchases? I didn't even own a simple rhino before so my first wheeled vehicle is a land raider and I feel proud.
1x land raider crusader/redeemer
1x sternguard squad
1x death company assault squad
im guessing some of you have episodes like this with the wife?????

Hahaha! I definitely sympathise with you. Every time I take a trip into Glasgow I drap my fiance into GW to look around. She hates it in there, and I always end up buying a few things.
Every birthday/Christmas I ask her to get me more models too. She just gives me a funny look, but she always gets me what I want
Do you have any GW stores at all in Cyprus? I've been to Paphos before, but I didn't see any there.

Nice haul.
The situation is normally reversed in my household. The Wife’s financial awareness is a little sketchy. She will often spend more then she thinks she is, buys not quite the correct thing, or just impulse buys things she “needs” So in general, I keep a very tight hold on my wallet, knowing that she doesn’t.
If The Wife went out and told me she was going to spend $50 and came back having spent $150, I’d be pissed. But our finances are a bit tight, I’m not sure how much flex is in your budget.

I control the Finances. My Fiancee asks me if she can buy things haha. So glad i will never have to go through it. My Fiancee loves reading so she reads my rule book and codex fluff, and I just read rules. So she talks to other 40k people about fluff related content to keep them off my back while I do my thing (not a fan of 40k fluff).
works out well.
I will admit it took about a year to get into the habbit of only buying models I can use and paint etc, so its not a bad thing to have someone there to stop you.

The wife and I make nearly the same amount of money, but I control the finances. I'm often the one to reign in her spending on various stuff, so its never really a hard sell to her to justify $50-100 here and there on some minis.
Besides, she enjoys painting them, so its a win-win.

I control my income of the money and she controls hers but she knows every purchase I make....
My simple trick to not being killed for my purchases is to sit their and look at the GW site and show her what a bargain my second hand gear was....OR....i remind her how i could sell all my gaming stuff and take up drinking every weekend with the boys and drugs...OR...I just remind her that i am saving for the ring she wants so I'm not so bad anymore haha.
In all fairness she doesn't complain much at all

I have been giving this a lot of thought as I am about to get married and then return to the UK with my new wife. She's Korean, so I've been trying to work out how to explain this hobby haha, (I showed her some pictures and told her to imagine playing Starcraft on a table with Gundam kits.) one thing I'm sure will be difficult to understand is the price however.
Luckily I already have a complete Tyranid army that is awaiting highlights (so lots to do). My Necromunda collection which is metal and I want to strip and repaint, and also I have a blood angels army kicking about somewhere. This means I have lots of hobby stuff to do without spending the big bucks straight away.
However, I still want to start an Eldar Kill Team (and later Combat Patrol), I'll have to buy new paints too for repainting. I want to expand my necromunda collection to have one of each gangs. I want to have my models stored nicely... This is all gonna cost money.
I really think the best way to do this is to assign myself "pocket money". Something she can agree on, like £10 a week. This would have to cover all hobbies, (Warhammer, iPad apps, DJing, Photography.) I think it would be an adequate amount.
I'll make sure she also has some money to spend on things she likes too.
I think that's the best away to go about it.
|
Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-) |

The best way to do it, is just be sensible.
There are guys I know that have like 9+ armies and keep buying more. If its in moderation nobody will mind, even your partner.

My girlfriend doesn't mind me having a hobby at all, as long as I don't spend too much. £50 a month is pretty much my limit per month on new purchases. I do frequently sell older projects to get new stuff too.
Hell, we are looking for somewhere to live and my GF has TOLD me that I'm having a gaming room as long as there is a spare room. She's even going to be using her Art Degree to make some scenery... still trying to get her to play the games though lol.
My ex wife on the other hand... yeah, she hated the fact I had a hobby and flat out refused to let me spend any money.

When I first got a source of income other than my - admittedly very generous - allowance from my parents, I went a little nuts with the buying of WH40k stuff. I'm pretty sure one day I was like, "I'll go buy an entire 1500pts Eldar army right the fel now without buying the Codex first or doing any research!" and I did, and then a week or two later I was looking for a birthday present for my friend so I bought three Vindicators and painted them up within two days. Then I bought a Land Raider Crusader and painted it as well a week or two later. (how those presents for my friend work is that I buy the components for, build, and paint a model (typically an infantry or bike-mounted infantry character) taking input from him on the design, and then I take a photo for him to enjoy, and I keep the model. The reason for this arrangement is that I don't know his home address, and neither of us wants to meet the other in real life, so we don't know each other's home address, so photos over the Internet is the only way I can show him the models, and I can't mail them to him. Also we live in neighbouring countries, close enough together that I'm usually getting the weather he had two hours ago, but not close enough to accidentally meet IRL.) I might've also bought my Realm of Battle board in there somewhere.
Anyways, it got to the point where one day, I went into my local gaming store, and tried to buy a thing of GW plastic glue (I use testors now) for less than 10 dollars. Insufficient funds. I've since gotten a handle on my spending habits, and fortunately even when I've gone over what I intended to spend, have still had ample funds to, say, replace my gaming computer should the need arise.
However, as to your question, I don't have a wife. Or a girlfriend. Or a boyfriend. Or a husband. I have two very special friends online, plus five very close friends in real life who take care of such needs for me. But I have gotten some disapproving words from my parents regarding said spending splurge above, as well as that time when I was spending a couple hundred dollars a month on character services for World of Warcraft.

Your replies are all sounding so familiar and I'm glad to say the friction has already blown over at home but I'm sure she meant what she said. I'm going yo keep low profile for a few weeks maybe a month or two meaning no mention of wh40k just in case. When I feel the atmosphere is back to normal I may start taking risks and start at least searching eBay again.
Here in paphos there use to be a model shop where I think they mostly played rather than sell a vast collection of games workshop but it being in paphos I font even think it lasted that long. The shops still there but it's no longer bring used. There is a model shop in Nicosia that I've not been to yet but my guess it's super expensive since you will pay in euros plus they would add import charges etc plus a profit charge. I can see a 30gbp item being charged at around 50-60 euros. It would be interesting to actually find out what they sell and how much they sell them for.
I don't have a compulsive disorder if spending but I have spent night hours burning searches on eBay looking for related stuff even though 90% of the sales are rigged to go higher than normal.
I have now near 5000 points of blood angels. Only 20 marines actually detail painted and the rest awaiting cleaning and re painting as they were bought second hand. To be fair it will take me years to paint my army completely so it's fair to say yo lay off buying any further till I complete what I have I guess.
How many of you have more models unpainted than painted????

I think the problem was that I stopped for years collecting / showing interest in wh40k and something a year ago triggered it inside me and it caught my wife off guard so it's like something out of blue was discovered that's why I think it caused me some friction. She knows obviously now I'm in to it but probably didn't realize how expensive mini collecting was

You should tell your wife to stop getting her nails done, not to go near hair salons, and to stop going shopping for clothes. Wow. If my girlfriend tried to "ban" me from using forums, visiting stores, or painting, I would laugh at her. Really though, I just can't see her doing that. Sounds like there are some other serious problems other than just having a hobby.

From the tone of your post, kerikhaos, I'm assuming you're running a little bit with hyperbole. But I still sense that there was some truth to it. She was unhappy. While she might not be able to actually ban you from looking at the forums, she will probably give you a frown and a sniff if she sees you on here?
This is why I can't do relationships. The thought of someone lording something over me like that literally makes me feel physically ill.
I realise relationships are a give and take, and if you have kids there may not be the money in the budget to irresponsibly go out and buy toys. I realise this and I am not saying your wife is a tyrant and you should break free. Maybe she is in the right. Maybe toy men shouldn't have been your first priority. (but a 30 pound spending limit in a GW store? Hah! Doesn't she realise GW plastic is worth more than gold?)
But I've gotta say, posts like this reinforces my wish to never marry, never have kids and the feeling that one night stands are clearly a more fulfilling life for me than marriage.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking this. I understand that different people live in different situations but some of the posts in this thread have certainly intrigued me.
At the end of the day, both my misses and I work for our money. As long as I pay into our joint account to cover our mortgage and bills then the rest of my money is for me to do with what I please and the same goes for my misses. The only time we would stop each other from buying something is if that purchase would have a negative impact on what we pay into the joint account.
As for your purchases, I like them! A Dakka Land Raider is always a sweet choice, the Sternguard kit is really nice with tons of extras on the sprue for adding to other models you have and I Death Company are suitably badass!!

I restrict my own gaming spending far more than my wife ever would.
That said, I don't tend to spend more than $100 in a couple of months unless it's a special occasion (birthday and xmas monies at our start-of year national con - where there are sales on as well).

My wife does our finances, being an accountant.
But, she has her knitting and craft hobbies, and often ends up spending too much in the day a new batch of wool hits her fav web-store.
So, when we saw a 25%-off offer at Hobbycraft last year, and as they'd not raised their prices, it was splurge-time.
It's all her fault I'm playing 40k again anyway. And Hobbycrafts's.
"Get in there and find a hobby", she says. Whoops
