Hello everyone, with the new Imperial Guard book on the horizon there have been some rumors that they may eventually come out with Plastic Steel Legion models which if it is true I will happily rebuild an army of these guys. However I am also realizing that they are rumors and they could very well be false meaning I would get myself all worked up for nothing. That being said however a thought did occur to me as using the Engineer models from the Death Korps of Krieg range as my Armageddon Steel Legion could be a good Proxy in case they dont, I would do this for several reasons:

-The Engineers coats are the same length as the Armageddon Steel Legion Troopers.
-Access to arms would allow me a wide range of Special Weapons as well as Lasgun arms.
-"Mole Launcher" could be converted to a RPG/Recoilless Rifle, Heavy Flamer, ect.

Just wanted to see what you guys thought of this idea and if anyone has pictures or seen this done before? Also any other ideas and thoughts are more then welcome, thanks for reading guys!

Honestly, were I you, I'd start buying the metal minis on the GW website (Or have your FLGS order them for you).

Let's compare the costs (all prices U.S.):
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440249a&prodId=prod1140104
Cost: 35.00 dollars.
That nets you a Missile Launcher in the squad, as well as a Grenade Launcher.

If you want additional special weapons your only option is a lone plasma gunner:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440249a&prodId=prod1140055
Cost: 9.90 dollars

In addition, you can get two alternate heavy weapon teams for your force in the form of a Lascannon, or Heavy Bolter team, as well as extra Missile Launcher teams as well should you want them.
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1130546
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1130547
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1130548
Cost: 17.00 dollars.

The heavy weapons are where things get pricey, but if you're smart with them you can get away with just one or two since Steel Legion are known for using tanks. Also, you get a Missile Launcher HWT in each 10 man squad, so if you like Missile Launchers and don't see the need for Heavy Bolters or Lascannons in your infantry, you can use those in lieu of other heavy weapons.

Lastly, you get to the HQ.
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440247a&prodId=prod1130430
Cost: 10.75 dollars
or
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440247a&prodId=prod1140113
Cost: 13.25 dollars

In order to get enough Infantry to field a minimal army you'll need to pick up an HQ choice, plus some additional infantry to field a CCS (Unless you go with the Lord Commissar, which I would consider running anyway as a second HQ choice or as an alternate HQ option).
35.00+35.00+35.00+10.75 = 115.75 dollars minimum for thirty-five guys and a handful of left over infantry.

That's enough to make two veteran squads, each with a Missile Launcher team and Grenade Launcher, and a Company Command Squad with a Commander, a Missile Launcher team, a grenade launcher, one lasgun guardsman, and you'll have a model you can buy (In the current codex, which may change with the new codex in a week or so) with a CCW and Laspistol as a bodyguard should you choose to do so. You'll have about four or five models left over from one infantry box un-used if you choose to field them this way.

Compared to Forgeworld's costs.

A five man squad of Engineers
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Death-Korps-of-Krieg/DEATH_KORPS_OF_KRIEG_INFANTRY_AND_ACCESSORIES/DEATH_KORPS_OF_KRIEG_ENGINEERS.html
Cost: 37.45 dollars (22.50 British Pounds)

So to get a 10 man squad of Engineers would run you 74.90.

Then you factor in the HQ squad:
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Death-Korps-of-Krieg/DEATH_KORPS_OF_KRIEG_INFANTRY_AND_ACCESSORIES/DEATH-KORPS-OF-KRIEG-COMMAND-SQUAD.html
Cost: 41.61 dollars (25.00 British Pounds)

In order to get the same number of troops you could get for 115.00 using the metal Steel Legion troops above (the old school metal minis netting you a handful of extra minis, and missile launchers + grenade launchers for every squad), you would need to spend the following from Forge World:
74.90+74.90+41.61 = 191.41 dollars.
That gets you two 10 man squads of basic guys with 'lasguns' (They look more like a cylinder-fed shotgun kind of weapon to me, or a small grenade launcher or sorts), as well as one command squad with a standard bearer, one voxcaster, a plasma gun, a melta gun, and an Officer model (Company Commander).

Yes, the DKoK models are stunning and amazingly beautiful sculpts. I will not deny that. However, unless you are just completely against the old school metal Steel Legion Sculpts, you get a lot more bang for your buck model wise by going with the older Steel Legion minis.

Personally, were I in your position, I'd go with the old school metal Steel Legion and get a basic force started up after the new codex hits. That way you don't spend money on something you might not wind up wanting or needing.

I hope that helps. If money is no object to you, and you prefer the way the DKoK minis look, then go with what you prefer. It's your army and you need to be happy with it at the end of the day.

That's all I've got for now. Take it easy and best of luck sir.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

The biggest reason I am not wanting to use the metal models is that I actually used to have a large army of Steel Legion, however the constant chipping of paint was really getting to annoy me, no matter how careful after a few months the paint would have to be touched up to the point where I stopped even bothering to do it. I really just cannot do metal models again!

I feel your pain. However, some decent varnish may prevent a lot of paint chipping and if you apply the varnish before you even prime the model, it provides an even better protection for metal minis.

I've yet to find a good way to prevent chipping including using a clear floor varnish & then going over it with matte.

As for buying the krieg boys? There are numerous options besides fw MSRP & the sad thing is all the "counterfeits" I've bought have had far fewer defects & just as crisp detail as fw for a significant savings. I've got no problem with buying fw but I do have a problem paying more for poorer quality.

DKO k are not SL, and vice versa. They won't look the same. One looks like a 1914 German trooper in space, the other looks like a a chem hazard cleanup crew with helmets in space. I like the aesthetic of the steel legion, but I'd say maybe only vets, commissars and officers and their staff as DKOK might pass. The only excuse to buy DKOK is because you want to field DKOK. If you really want to gamble with an analogue, there's WGF shock troops.
