Assuming you're talking about using non-metallic paints to paint metallic objects as an effect, the only advice I have comes at the end of this article.

Coolminiornot.com has a ton of articles on the subject ranging from beginner to advanced, including (if I remember right) everything from color theory to Sky-Earth NMM techniques. A couple are kind of wonky, but many of them are very informative. That's where I picked up my first tips and tricks. After you learn the basic techniques, then its time to experiment!
