Bounding Assault Marine

Hey Dakka,
I'm going to be starting a 1500 point army of Altansar Craftworld Eldar and had a few questions. I didn't know whether to put this in tactics, background, lists or general, but I'm just trying to figure out a fluffy, non-competitive list. I feel like a beggar asking for help, but it is what it is.
Really want Maugen Ra at least as he's essentially leading them at the moment, so I'll probably use him and a pack of Dark Reapers at the least. I'm also just starting out on the Eldar path, moving on from playing Salamander Space Marines so I don't really know a lot about their play on the
table just from reading all the story books and things.

If you are using Dark Reapers, I really recommend watching the codex review video on them by Nafka since he uses them.

Executing Exarch
|
Maugan Ra is not the greatest in the way of phoenix lords, and does not work well with his aspect(unlike most of the other lords). His gun is shorter range and is made for different targets. I have found him to be incredibly effective in a blob of 20 guardians with 2 scatter lasers and a farseer. Although expensive, you get 11 S6 shots at 3' that are twin linked each turn. The blob is also fearless, and preferred enemy deamons never hurts. Use Maugan to tank everything but Ap2/Ap1, and LOS those to the guardians. Dark reapers work well ~5, exarch with night vision and fast shot required. Starshot missiles for the exarch, I personally don't like the EML, as the S5 ap3 solid shots work better than the S4 ap4 blasts against primary reaper targets(Bikes, MEQ, light armor). Starshot missiles are OK for the squad, but not required. Reapers are also a prime target for guide. Even though reapers and Maugan are not the best choices for an Eldar army, you can still round out your force with plenty of wave serpents, a squad of war walkers, wraithknights etc for a very strong list. Eldar work by lots of mid range S6 shooting, lances and melta for Anti heavy tank, and moving around a lot. Most units can't take a punch to save their lives unless they have the word "wraith" in their name. Basically everything in the codex is playable, the notable exception being banshees, which are terrible.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

You definitely want a aegis defence line for the reapers to hide behind.
Maugen Ra can work well with harlequins too and their presence works well enough with the fluff.

Oh wow thank you for the help and know how. Ok, I'll look at an aegis. Still reading and learning. Yeah, going for a balanced army with a slight lean towards heavy suppression.
As I said before, I'm not competitive, but winning is nice.

include an Aegis + Quad for extra points
if you sit Maugan AND a Guardian on it, this means you can choose to use Maugan for interceptor fire (as he ignores jink), while having the guardian fire the quad, and the Maugetar during your shooting phase.

Altansar would use plenty of Wraith units, right? Because they lost so many Eldar in the warp. I can imagine a unit of 6 or 7 Wraithguard advancing up field with Maugan Ra would be suitably scary. If you keep Ra with Reapers you are wasting that amazing melee potential, but Wraith Guard are so short range that you will probably be assaulted. Yeah it's quite slow (i wouldn't recommend Wave Serpents, they are just to powerful. As a Dark Eldar player i think they ruin non-competitive games) but it has an 18'' kill zone of strength 10 AP 2 all the while Ra will be split firing his thing where ever he needs it.
Reapers are great, especially against biker armies that would usually be very scary. You would want a unit of 5 + Exarch to put a reasonable dent in big biker units. Other then that you would probably include a Farseer, a blob or two of Guardians with limited aspect warriors. Maybe include a troupe of Harlequins for fluff? They could make a good counter assault unit to bail out the Wraithguard from any unit that Ra can't handle.

That sounds wonderful! You're right. Having an 18" stop sign of wraithguard + Ra would be nice. I'll see if I can fit Harlequins somewhere. Thanks for the help.

Reapers?
I've been putting Illic in some Reapers units lately.
Instant Shrouding and Split Fire is well worth it!
