I've been inspired by many threads on Dakka to start this project, particularly those focusing on creating characterful miniatures for Necromunda of Inq28.

I'm hoping that by focusing on individual miniatures I can improve my painting and modelling skills as time goes by.

There are so many amazing blogs on dakka that I couldn't possibly name them all for their sources of inspiration. Needless to say, if you have a blog and you have characterful conversions I'll have been borrowing your thoughts!

For this particular project there are some specific threads where I've drawn most inspiration from... read: stolen ideas...
Apologist
Lipsdapips
PDH

I've always loved the Cadian respirator heads from forgeworld but was never a fan of the Cadian bodies as a whole. Apologist (see above) has shown that combining these with Elysian bodies leads to a great and proportionate look.

Gue'la Commandos are utilised for a wealth of combat roles throughout the Tau Empire. They are comprised of Gue'vesa that show themselves to be utterly devoted to The Greater Good while possessing exceptional combat abilities. They are most often utilised against the Imperium for a variety of subterfuge roles where the cultural barriers cannot alone be overcome by the stealth tactics of Tau Pathfinders.

These commandos will often pose as bounty hunters to infiltrate Imperial worlds, instigating assassinations or riots to pave the way for further Tau expansion

Seeing that the officer "drawing his weapon" piece was included in the respirator set, along with the fact that Tau Pathfinders have pistols (holstered and exposed) in the new kit, led me to the idea of creating this guy. The general idea being that gak is just about to hit the fan and like Han Solo before him, he's going to get gak done first!

Needless to say I see these guys as the "Ultimate Badass" in the same way that the Colonial Marines from Aliens are. They might be great for standard missions but when they come up against the Warp, Genestealers or other void nightmares they are perhaps left wanting. Perhaps...

Spoiler:

I'm getting a Boba Fett vibe off of this guy and I'm wondering whether I should use my appalling GS skills to attempt to make a cape. I'm also considering perhaps removing the Tau icons on the other shoulder and knife to go along with the idea that he could infiltrate his way on to an Imperial world.

As always, thanks for looking!

So after looking at the original Gunslinger I decided I didn't quite like his final appearance so I made some alterations. I also threw together a Veteran and a Deserter.

Bounty Hunter
In the employ of the Tau Empire for exorbitant fees this individual will go to extreme lengths to complete his mission. A duelist by nature, possessing two finely crafted pistols of Tau and Human design, and no stranger to a gunfight. The power knife stored upon his back ensures that he is always ready to gut the foe if they foolishly stray too close.

Veteran/Mercenary
Having served under the Bounty Hunter for years he has proven to be an invaluable asset to ongoing operations. He likes to keep a Kroot blackpowder pistol handy for "close encounters" with terrifying xenos horrors or rampaging zealots.

Deserter
Weight of numbers are often required. These outcasts are issued with the most basic of gear and are expected to die in service to the Empire. Survivors may enjoy further employ under the Bounty Hunter.

I tried taking some slightly clearer pictures by using a pseudo lightbox... read "sheets of white paper". I think it kind of worked out well, any feedback would be appreciated!
Bounty Hunter

Mercenary

I've been trying to think of names for these particular guys but I'm stumped. Wrote a bit of fluff to give them a context of who they are.

The acoylte arrived just in time to see the Inquisitors' head fragment, as a bullet passed through his skull,
recieving a round to his left knee for the priviledge. Hitting the ground hard his bolt pistol sprawled across
the rain slicked landing pad and he could taste the familiar tang of blood in his mouth. Struggling to rise, he
felt a great weight strike the back of his head and he slipped into unconsciousness.

They had been tracked for a week and a half, fighting running gun battles with this Bounty Hunter and his troupe of
rogues and mercenaries. The conflict finally had come to a head as he and the Inquistor made for their escape at
this abandoned space port. It would be their grave.

There had been 9 of them to set foot on this world, only 3 had made it to the port. One by one they had been
eliminated by the ruthless cadre of xenos employed scum. They had killed many of them, bandits or deserter
guardsmen hired simply to join the hunt. The Bounty Hunter had been less than phased by these casualties, pursuit
would break off and then recommence several hours or even days later with more of the wretched fodder. Veterans of
a myriad inquisotrial missions laid low by this Bounty Hunter and his ruthless attrition. They had fought him
directly only twice during the past week, he chose his moments to reveal himself and perform his deadly craft. An
exceptional duelist with his Xeno and Human pistols he had laid low two of their group during the initial
confrontation but not without enduring a wound of his own. His leg broken by the kick of a particularly savage
death cultist. She was laid low by one of his more veteran companions before she could end his life. The
blackpowder pistol had blown a hole clear through her chest. Her death scream echoing around the factorum as the
gunfight raged on.

The preceding days saw the end of the rest of their companions as they were wittled down to three while making
haste for the space port, and that is where it would end.

Slowly the acoylte regained consciousness, the rain still fell and the wind swept across the high rise of the
landing pad. The burning wreckage of what could only be assumed to be their escape shuttle streaked across the sky
as a distinctly avian dropship made its approach to the landing pad. The remainder of the Bounty Hunter's cadre
made their way aboard the access ramp as it descended. The acolyte made effort to rise, to get to his bolt pistol,
to kill these whoresons. His venom was supressed as he was forced back to the ground by a boot to his shoulder. He
looked at his oppressor, a visage normally associated with Imperial pride looked down with no descernable emotion.
The boot lifted from his shoulder and struck his face.

The engines of the dropship roared and its searchlights focused on the acolyte and his oppressor. The Bounty Hunter
approached. The light danced over his angular, rain drenched armour and the penetrating glow of his eye piece focused
on the acolyte. He must have been no more than 6 feet outwith his armour. As he passed the acolytes pistol he kicked
it across the pad, it slid inevitably towards the edge, before disappearing forever. His voice, a guttural growl that hinted
at some unseen injury, crackled out from his vox.

"You have done well to last this long Imperial... I expected you to be the first to die during the hunt."

The Acolyte remained silent, his eyes burning with rage.

"Surely you must know that the assination of this Planets politcal structure will not halt its joining with The Empire?
Your futile struggle against the Greater Good is pointless. This world has been long forgotten by the Imperium, The Tau
seek to better it. Humanity has so much to gain beyond the shackles of The Imperium..."

The Acolyte spat, "Emperor curse y..."

The shell passed through his forehead before he could finish.

He turned to the mecenary "Such blind devotion"

The mecenary shook his head, an expression of his contempt for the decesed. "Shall we take the bodies?"

"Let them rot." Growled the Bounty Hunter as he, and then the Mercenary, began to make their way across the landing pad.

"A testament to their own extinction."

As they boarded the dropship, the searchlights disengaged and the glow of the engines disapated as
the ship slowly pulled away. The corpses of the Acolyte and Inquisitor abandoned to darkness.

These are off to a great start. The forge world cadian heads work very well in this context. Love the pose of the veteran.

Thanks for the feeback man.

Yeah, I'm really happy with the pose of the kneeling chap.

I can see where you're coming from with the cluttered suggestion. I think, and hope, some paint will tie it all together.

In other news; The Inquistor rulebook arrived today so I can have a mull over that. I know you can download the resources free but felt it necessary to have a physical copy.

Worked up 3 more guys today. Two more Mercenaries & converted the previous deserter into a Mercenary and used his old head to form the basis of my suicide bomb.

Suicide Bomber
Either filled with combat drugs or completely insane these men are of no further use to the Bounty Hunter and are given a final task for the greater good. Some go willingly, while others a presumably coerced...

I wanted this guy to feel like he was mindlessly charging forward until he finally is destroyed, either through his own actions (the grenade in his hand, or by being detonated by the Bounty Hunter or one of his men.

Flamer
I just liked the idea of swapping out the fuel line for the fusion blaster cell to give the impression that the Tau tech was making weapon usage easier.

Swordsman
Basically just wanted another veteran that perhaps fancies himself as the equal of the Bounty Hunter. Tracking some unknown foe as they dart between cover.

Head swapped this guy for a respirator head. Prefer him this way and needed the Catachan head for my suicide bomb!

Cheers for looking.

Interesting take what sort of cast are you planning personally I'm looking forward to a few alien critters from you

It is an oath we honour. Thanks chaps, far too kind to me!

Llamahead you may like this update!

Was inspired by various sources for this next chap.

Most of the inspiration can be attributed to the Combine Advisor from HL2, which is the reason it has the floaty camera eyepiece.

The Cephalopd theme is just because I love cuttlefish.
Spoiler:

Also this is what I've always had in my head that the Nicassar look like. Although the particular piece of fan art that inspired this thinking is not official, it does have the Nicassar at a rather large size. I've resolved that this particular creature isn't going to be a Nicassar.

I've used Spore Mines as heads before for some Zoan/Venomthrope counts as models but used the FW spore as a body. I felt this would be too large for what I wanted to achieve.

I was going to give him some kind of offensive weapon but felt that he was much more menacing without any obvious weapon. The idea is that his psychic ability more than makes up for the suits lack of weapons, although his tentacles can prove to be quite dexterous and strong when required.

I'd like to think he's the overseer of any particular Xenos contact. His mind reading abilities able to instantly connect with other Xenos. Able to communicate through all particular Communion Helms present within the visinity, speaking multiple languages simultaneously.

So there we go! This guy was a lot of fun to build. I added the shoulder pad as a sort of crown to emphasise his importance and justify the camera eyepiece.

Only a human would be so arrogant to presume himself in charge..

Cheers Gogsnik, steal away! I steal.. err "borrow" all my ideas anyway!

While I did like the plain look of the faceplate/crown it did just look like a shoulderpad stuck to his face. I used one of the smaller markerlights as an eyepiece/camera that sits asymmetrically on the right hand side and so ties in with the other floating camera on the left hand side.

Some fluff
The Cephiida are a species that dwell upon the mostly ocean covered moon Sepi, orbiting the Volcanic world of Kromas, and have proven to be highly intelligent creatures. Initial induction into the Empire was conducted through a series of "talks" with the Nicassar in which psychic messages were exchanged. The Nicassar agreed that these creatures should be inducted into the Empire as they showed a high aptitude for linguistic learning and expressed a voracious appetite for knowledge. While possessing no advanced technology of their own, their psychic abilities have seen them enjoy life both above and below the waves.

The Nautilid XV-27 Survival & Amplification Suit has been designed to assist the Cephiida in further integration with the Tau Empire. Based on many designs used for the Nicassar, in terms of Psychic integration, the suit amplifies the Cephiidas abilities while bolstering its relatively weak physical frame. Within the Empire Cephiida can be most commonly found assisting Water Caste envoys with Xenos negotiations or futhering Earth Caste research.

More recently some encounters with hostile species have required the Cephiida to manifest their significant Psychic strength. One reported encounter between a Water Caste envoy and a particularly hands on Nekulli Mercenary saw the present Cephiida feel the threat to its Water Caste envoy to which it reacted by crushing the Nekulli within its psychic grasp. Before the Water Caste envoy could intervene the Mercenary was left ruined, shattered bones perforating every major organ.

The Cephiida are extremely loyal companions and will actively seek to protect any within their cohort from any real or perceived threat. Their loyalty to the Great Good is unquestionable. They see the coming of the Tau as the "Uplifting" within their species, a time which the extended hand of the Tau Empire raised them to become greater than they ever could on their own.

The general idea is that they are characters for Inquisitor. Seeing as I haven't really got a grasp on that system this could easily morph into something like that.

I'm not fully getting into the swing of Inq28 yet I feel. If I keep trying I'm sure it'll happen. The squid chap is getting me a bit closer I feel!

I have plans for creating more unique characters as I go along however, so hopefully that idea will become more apparent as the thread progresses.

To be fair to yourself my stuff is a bit general compared to your more Gothic Inq28 threads, and as an idea it could work very well.

Gunslinger as Commissar, Cephiida as Primaris Psyker etc etc.

Some lovely conversions, a couple may be overly screaming 'Tau!' but that's more the fault of GW creating such distinctive looks for its separate races.

The cephalopodic Cephiida is great - every unit should have a floaty squidy thing in it!

Cephalopoda are without doubt the coolest 'aliens' on our planet!

Looking forward to seeing some paint.

Thanks man.

With regard to making them look less Tau I was thinking of perhaps shaving off the Tau icons on the shoulder pads. Think I would leave the one on the Cephiida though unless I can find something to sit in its place.

I'm hoping whatever paint scheme I decide upon will make them less "Tau".

Any suggestions on potential paint schemes are welcome as that is most certainly not my strong suit.

You could use a little green stuff and also fill in the tau symbol on the Cephiida if you don't want to shave it off.

Love the cephalod! I think toning down the tau symbols could be a good idea -- just shaving/filing them down to flat circles could work and allow for nice areas for freehand.

One the many army ideas I considered when I got back into the hobby was a mixed xeno and human mercenary band with lots of different alien models, and you're doing a great job realizing my vague plans!

I hope you kit bash up some more exotic lesser-known aliens of the tau empire.

As far as color-schemes

Cheers guys. I'm really happy with the way the Cephiida turned out and I'm glad to be getting some great feedback.

Will definitely be making more Xenos in the future. Eyeing up some lizardmen stuff as a potential Tallerian Dog Soldier or other bigger Lizard species.

Decided to shave off the Tau symbols. Managed to obtain flesh wound getting it off the Translators face mask. But nothing that shouting "feth" and then sealing it with super glue didn't fix.

They look massively better, a lot sleeker and more mysterious.

I think as I build these guys up based around the idea I'll slowly combine some Inquisitor characters with more fun kitbash projects that would be perhaps best suited for regular 40k.

Alternatively this particular Inq28 could end up being based around the exploits of Inquisitors working in and around the Eastern Fringe.

Will be acquiring paints in the next few days and roll on from there.

All colour suggestions welcome. I was going to stay away from Tau browns, but I think more military/earthy colours will suit the Commander and Mercenaries. Might incorporate different colours for the Ceph Suit.
