I am looking for a cheaper test subjects. I am starting to paint and I don't want to paint up expensive space marines. Is the something in the same size that looks somewhat similar but cheap to test how the paint looks?

Look on eBay for cheap or used snap fit space marines from the "Assault of Black Reach" 5th edition starter box or the snap-fit Dark Angels from the soon-to-be-OOP "Dark Vengeance" 6th edition starter kit.
Bare plastic ones from Dark Vengeance are usually go for $12-$14 for all ten and you might be able to find used, poorly painted AoBR marines for even less; you could either paint over them or give them a quick bath in Super Clean of Simple Green and they'll be good as new.

Buy horribly painted stuff and strip them - I got full AOBR for <$50, all painted really badly, all stripped back to bare plastic easy enough.
I am about to do a test paint for blood angels on the terminators, after which I will strip them so I can test something else on them

You could buy a metal model or two that you like and some brake fluid. paint the model and then soak it in brake fluid for a little while and the paint comes right off so you can paint it again. Just be sure to scrub it with some dawn dishsoap or something that will remove the oily brake fluid before attempting to paint it again. I have done this many times to practice techniques mainly.

reaper bones. Some people didn't want everything, and you might be able to find some kickstarter backer that wants to get rid of some of their stuff. like me. The trouble is I'm saving stuff for a chess set and haven't yet thoroughly inspected everything, so, I'm out.
also try kijiji or ebay. You can get old OOP models for cheap that are in decent condition. If they are metal, you can strip them down pretty easy as well...

Go to a GW store and get 1 free marine.
Test paint on that and strip it with purple power or whatever stripper you can get
literally rinse and repeat when needed.
Some times they are nice and give you a few extra. or if they have it they also sell 3 man packs
