Hey guys!

This thread is going to be a dumping ground of everything I have painted, across a wide range of games and often quite random miniatures - rather than create new threads for each of them, thought it would be better to put them in just the one place.

I'm also hoping that the evocative thread title will pull people in to take a closer look..

So, without further ado: First up, Some Anglo-Danes I have been working on for SAGA

Hearthguard, armed with Dane axes

A collection of different shots of Warriors (I have 2 units of 8 so far in total)

Some minor conversion work on these guys

Any C&C very welcome!

Well, the title piqued my interest, but now I see it was an irony

Well painted throughout, I particularly like the shield markings!

Very nice - are the shields LBM decals? If so, how much work did they take to get looking that nicely worn? I always worry that decals will stand out, but these blend very nicely to the rest of the PJ.

Thanks very much for the comments guys.

LutherMax - while I would love to take credit for the shields, my lie would soon be exposed as someone I'm sure would identify them for what they are (decals from LittleBigMen Studios)!

richred_uk - They took very little work! Have to say, they are some of the nicest decals I have worked with. Just needed a little touching up around the edges, and some weathering powder just to flatten it a little. Didn't even need to use decal softener.

wasn't trying to play detective I've only worked with a couple of decals and they were meant to look quite 'popping' as designs - these really blend nicely into the model. I haven't got any Dark Ages stuff (yet), but Saga keeps calling to me and you're not making it any easier!

Well you've blended them in very deftly, which is a skill in itself!

It did, indeed - you had me at "Anglo-Danes."

Have to agree with the other posters - the models look great, overall. The shield faces, especially, stand out (decal or no, they were cleanly applied and artfully weathered - just take the damned compliments! ), but I'm also impressed with the naturalism of the basing.

As for criticism: A few of the models might benefit from a touch more color to the skin. The subtler tones work nicely, but only if you can maintain contrast - the hearthguard in red, especially, is looking grey enough that his face gets a bit lost between his helm and mail.

Only other potential tweaks I can think of are of a somewhat more "historically anal" bent. The first being the most brightly colored kyrtles. Desaturating them a bit would make for a better aesthetic match, in my opinion, with the shields, as well as being more indicative of the dyeing practices of the time. The second is the metal shield rims. Your options here are limited, as they appear to be a sculpted feature, but I don't believe there's any evidence of metal rims being used. Or any rims, for that matter. From my understanding, shields were considered rather disposable and softer constructions were even preferred (linden planks was the standard, IIRC), due to their ability to absorb weapon impacts and trap the blades (not getting stabbed is great - leaving your opponent unarmed is even better). Rawhide edging might be a bit more plausible (would add another hint of contrast, too), but even that is tenuous. Niggling points, of course, but I don't often get to put on my (early) medievalist hat, so I could scarcely help myself. Hope to see more!

Thanks very much for the comments guy, and especially for the detailed feedback Oadie!

Perfectly happy for you to put your historical hat on, am always happy to hear from someone who knows more than I about this subject! You aren't the first person to comment about the skin looking a bit drab, in fact someone I was playing the other day pointed it out. I'm also painting some War of the Roses-era miniatures, and whereas with those guys I'm going for a lot shinier metal and more vivid colours, I wanted to make these guys look a bit drabber, faded, and like they've been rolling through the mud a bit! That being said, I have maybe done that a bit too much - will add another highlight to the skin!

Point taken about the other elements also, I have another bunch of these guys to get painted up so will try and introduce those elements you mention.

Many thanks again for the feedback

A small update with some bits and pieces I have finished over the holiday season.

Firstly, the set of miniatures from the Talisman board game, being so light-hearted the perfect game for after dinner and some cans of beer on the table.

I've also been working on some 15mm terrain and a board, here is a quick shot of that, a Tiger and JagdPanzer IV rumbling through the French countryside. Hopefully a lot more to come of these!

Re-arranged and tidied up my miniature cabinet, thought I would post some pics of it

First level, mostly Infinity with some civilians from other companies

15mm WW2 Panzergrenadierkompanie, this is about an 85% complete project at the moment (with a few more vehicles and infantry to add)

Some other historicals, some Republican Romans & Gauls, as well as dark age Anglo-Danes (about an 80% complete SAGA force)

This level is very varied; some Orcs & Goblins, Forge Fathers, old Rogue Trooper-era minis, a pirate gang for Mordheim, and Dysoptian Wars ships

Pre-Heresy World Eaters in various forms; some 28mm guys, Battlefleet Gothic capital ships and escorts, and 6mm scale for Epic - a project that I really must get around to finish one day!

And finally, a complete shot of the whole thing

Any comments welcome!

Spiffy! I love seeing packed (perhaps "full but nicely arranged" would be a better choice of words) display cabinets, but I especially love seeing ones so varied. It's my eventual goal for my own - a shelf of 15mm WW2, one of Infinity, one of 28mm fantasy one-offs and warbands (dungeon crawler/D&D fare), etc. Actually, I already have that... just not fully painted.

At best, you've inspired me. At worst, you've tickled my fancy.

Out of curiosity, did you use the German infantry minis from the Open Fire! starter set for your FoW army?

Many thanks for the comments guys!

@oadie - the sad thing is a lot of these bits and pieces represent failed projects, or ones that got started when I picked up something else new and shiny
Of them though, I'm hoping to seriously bolster the 6mm Epic with an Ork army for the World Eaters to fight, and hopefully some more Forge Fathers if that range ever get expanded.

@Bufo bufo - It's a mix of ranges, mostly the Plastic Soldier Company late-war Panzergrenadiers, also some metal infantry from Command Decision. I made another blog here if you wanted to see some details of what miniatures were used http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/556325.page - hope that helps!

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Another quick update, with what will undoubtedly be another half-finished project!

This is the first (and possibly the last!) unit for a War of the Roses force (actually.. two forces, I'm hoping to make both Yorkist and Lancastrian forces that took part in the battle of Tewkesbury).

This is a unit of levy fighting under Lord Hastings (a close friend and ally of Edward IV), in Hastings' colour of azure blue and murray, with a mix of pikemen and longbowmen.

All of the miniatures are Perry plastics, in this case from the War of the Roses and Orleans to Agincourt sets.
In an effort to differentiate the levy from yeomen (who would have been better equipped), I have mixed in a few hundred-year war miniatures. A couple of the archers (the un-liveried ones) as well as the retinue member for the unit captain. He is wearing an armour type that would have been more common 30-40 years before the WoTR, but I liked the idea of a poorer family fighting on the Yorkist side, and perhaps wearing a suit of armour that has been passed down several generations after being brought back from France.

I don't really know if this is accurate, but liked the idea!

Any C&C very welcome, I have actually finished painting an army (which doesn't happen too often!) so will hopefully post that here in the next day or two.

A finished army! I played in a tournament with these guys, which does wonders for getting your arse into gear!

It's a 6-point Anglo-Dane warband for SAGA, with the little hovel in the background a kit from 4Ground.

Some close-up shots
Some warriors

The Warlord and his Hearthguard. The Warlord is on 'final warning' having spectacularly failed in combat in pretty much every game I have played. It's actually a Warlord miniature from the Celtic range, I like the idea of him finding some ancient and extremely expensive suit of armour that had been taken from a burial mound. But, perhaps it's useless which is why he tends to lose in personal combat!

A necro with some necros!

Finished off this team for Blood Bowl. These are miniatures from an Italian company called Greebo. You can see their ranges here, they do some awesome looking Norse, elf and orc teams amongst others http://www.greebo-games.com/

Beautiful sculpts (nearly all different in the set), I got a few extra freebies in with my order. Also, helps that the £ is very strong vs. the Euro at the moment if you are ordering from the UK !

The complete team:

Flesh Golems

Zombies

Ghouls

Wights

Werewolf

Next up might actually be another finished army. More than one in a year, if you can believe it!

I've been painting a lot but not really photographing it. Here is something I picturated for another thread, a Colonial Marine for the new AvP board game. I have now idea how the game plays, but the minatures are things of beauty. Honestly, if you're a fan of the films you will love them!

Still a little bit WIP as I have to add the Sulaco-style bases

It's been a while but thought I should update this thread.

Some Gladiators I've been working on for the boardgame Spartacus, and a big 6-7 player game I have planned (Spartacus is an awesome game, thoroughly recommend it!)

I picked up these guys from a gaming show some years ago, sadly have forgotten which range they are from (I know they did do a rather good Russell Crowe-a-like and Emperor from the famous film as well)
