So, the wife and I just picked up Netflix not too long ago. Tragically, Netflix doesn't have a ton to offer. Gargoyles, Just Shoot Me, Sailor Moon, no matter what we look for, no dice.
Except Star Trek.
So I've been watching that, pretty much non-stop. To that end, we have the first in my (many) part series. Fan favorites!
As a side note, out of all the threads I've ever created, this is the one I give the highest odds of eventually spiraling out of control and getting locked. But, fingers crossed, optimism hat on, we can avoid bloodshed.

Kirk is fun, but not very well-rounded. Sisko is interesting, but seems mentally unbalanced. Janeway could have been great, but there was little character development at all because the writers sabotaged every opportunity to solve problems with something else than "engage the neutrino-Patassium-beam!" or crap like that.
Oh, and Archer. Almost forgot him. Felt a bit Mary Sue-like at times.

I voted Kirk... It may be heresy to say this, but I actually quite enjoy "new Kirk" more than Shatner's kirk.
Sure, I liked watching Picard and crew in TNG, but I just think that Enterprise was too comfy, and they seemed to always get the upper hand in the most "unexpected" ways (looking at all those episodes with Q)

*Kirk, if I want a captain who can beat a Klingon captain, then blow up his ship in combat, then bang his wife.
*Picard if I want to negotiate a treaty with the Klingons.
*Sulu if I want an Admiral to command Star Fleet, because Sulu is cool.
*Worf if I want a Klingon leading a raid onto a Klingon planet.
*Sisko if I want to wipe out the Klingons.

Pfft. Captain Adama.
Adama once let a cylon shoot him five times just so he could get some sleep.

It's a shame what happened to the "Admiral's dog" I think that Montgomery Scott would have made an excellent captain (though, to be fair, they'd have to move the bridge down to the engineering decks, since he'd be forced to do everything himself)

He was going to be an officer until he faced the kobayashi maru in the academy. He kept using various methods to destroy the Klingon vessels (Like teleporting explosives to their cargo holds) and did it all so well that they sent him to work in engineering.

Picard, every other answer is wrong!
Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines
Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.
Sisko is my favorite Captain. He's not a dedicated diplomat like Picard, or a bordeline out of control womanizing hoop-kicker like Kirk (let's all admit it; Kirk has no place in a real military organization). He is, however, the very best blend of the two. He can negotiate like Picard and he can shove a volley of photon torpedoes into your face like Kirk.
Archer and Janeway were both let down by dodgy and inconsistant writing. Janeway especially suffered from this, as her personality changed from episode to episode.
Emperor's Eagles (undergoing Chapter reorganization)
Caledonian 95th (undergoing regimental reorganization)
Thousands Sons (undergoing Warband re--- wait, are any of my 40K armies playable?)
Well not in the current ones perhaps? (any serving forces people with insights or stories here?)
There were definately some 16th-18th century ship captains that were pretty similar and even in fairly recent history some pretty excentric charatcers in the various militaries of the world

The Federation fleet is not military, it is exploratory/diplomatic.
Except that it is, of course. It just isn't solely military, it is an amalgam of exploratory and military. In "Errand of Mercy" Kirk specifically says "That's the first thing that would be lost! Excuse me, gentlemen. I'm a soldier, not a diplomat. I can only tell you the truth." This is just more evidence of how the Next Gen tainted the series. TAINTED!
