So I am just starting out on my first fresh box of models in 15 years (In the past two years I have been buying already painted figs and playing with those, then I moved on to painting some of the pre-painted figs myself so I haven't had to do glueing for years)

Question is... does ANYONE have a quicker way to file & glue? I have now put in close to 4 hours on my new Tau empire box and have:

Finished 6 Drones
Finished 12 Fire Warriors
Almost Finished 12 Kroot (Each just needs one arm glued to be finished)
Almost finished 3 stealth suits (Each just needs weapon to be mounted and a magnet added for support system upgrades)

I haven't even TOUCHED the devilfish or the crisis suit.

I had considered tumbling the bits after cutting them but figure that would take away too much detail and sorting through everything afterwards will take more time than it will save.

I actually use an acrylic spray paint to prime&basecoat my models at the same time so I figure the amount of time I have spent glueing & filing so far for the models I have done is going to take more time than the painting (Easy painting, spray a couple of coats of Red on & Let Dry [xcept kroot which will be sprayed yellow], paint cloth and 'shiny' bits black, ink, drybrush, small details (lights etc.) done.) I did 12 already assembled fire warriors and 10 assemebled gun drones with a total of about 2 1/2 hours of work, but in this case the more models you do the less time it takes because a lot of that was waiting for the first coat to be done because you HAVE to wait 24 hours (or so) after you apply the acrylic spray to paint anything because it stays sticky a lot longer than Vallejo.

Anyway, any suggestions would be lovely.

You are pretty much SOL unless you do not care about mold lines.

Only 2 ideas I have ever seen work somewhat are:

1. Remove mold lines after assembly. Same train of thought as painting after assembly-you only mess with what you can see.

2. Gentle use of polystyrene cement applied to mold lines will dissolve them. Some people I know can do this, I do not have the touch required to not mess up the outlying areas.

I will tell you one thing NOT to do. Don't be tempted to use CA glues and then spray with an accellerator such as Zip-Kicker. The accellerator says it's safe on most plastics, but guess who's plastics it's not safe with? It reacts pretty nicely with GW plastics and disolves enough to totally ruin all the detail on figures.

To be flat out honest, GW plastic needs patience when dealing with most glues. For some reason most plastic cements and glues I've tried take a while to set in and start to react, and then they take even longer to bond and set. I have had the best luck with Testors cement in the black plastic bottle, and decent luck with Tamiya Extra-Thin. Tenax and Micro-Weld seem to react too strongly, and the vapors cause all sorts of fun effects over a lot of the surface. Zap CA glues don't like to hold unless you give the plastic a good wash first, and as mentioned the accellerators react with the plastic.

Concerning mold lines, instead of filing I would recommend scraping them off with a fresh knife blade. It´s still an annoying bit of a work, but it should be considerably quicker.

A quiker way to glue would be using water and super glue or any other glue who consists of cyanoacrylate, just a drop of water and the thing you want to glue, it'll stick together in one second.

You may also want to consider a plastic cement (use sparingly!). They tend to be 'tackier' than super glue, and with the exception of the most difficult kits (Eldar Guardian arms come to mind) will hold the figure together while the glue cures, 'melting' the plastic and forming a nice bond.

I've used plastic cement on Tau FCW and drones, as well as Catachan plastics with little or no curing 'disintigration'.

I'll just have to 2nd ESDK's knife solution, the mould lines just fly off. I think I tried filing once, but it cant compare on plastic.

With the galaxy as large as it is the odds of the average guardsmen seeing and fighting a marine or MEQ are relatively slim. Unfortunately the guardsmen in your (and anyone else who plays IG's) army are the REALLY, REALLY LUCKY ones that fight marines ALL the time...

@Hans, that sucks, but is funny at the same time.

Im going to third ESDK's knife solution, if you have a steady hand.

I actually used to use my fingernails and that worked fairly well, but that may or may not be the best idea.

You mean there are worse kits than Kroot?!?

I used to use zip-kicker til the store i go to stopped carrying that particular brand, never had and issue with it melting anything beyond possibly allowing fingerprints to impress,. However as it is now unavailable, i use a foam compatible activator to the same result.

not anywhere i have purchased from, but theres a pic and price there.
