Something that just came up in a thread in the Eye of Terror...

The rules for Infantry Firing From Vehicles state:

"If passengers fire from a closed vehicle and any of them do not have a Saving throw of 2+ or 3+ (using the best of Armour Save and Invulnerable Save), then in the following player turn, enemy firing at or assaulting the vehicle count it as open-topped to represent the chance of hitting exposed passengers and the hits passing into the vehicle"

Rulebook, page 64.

Now, I've always taken that to mean that if any of the pasengers on board have armour worse then 3+, the vehicle counts as open-topped. But after actually stopping and reading the entry properly, it seems to be saying that the vehicle only counts as open topped if the models actually firing have armour worse than 3+.

So, for example, a power armoured Inquisitor with a retinue, in a rhino... So long as the Inquisitor is the only one to shoot from the hatch, the vehicle would not count as open-topped.

If passengers fire from a closed vehicle and any of them do not have a Saving throw of 2+ or 3+...

Any thoughts?

It is referring to those firing so if the ones with less than 3+ were not firing out of a hatch it would still be closed top. If you had three hatches and one of the three models firing had a 4+ it would be open topped. It is limited to the firing models by the first few words of the sentence.

Ahoj!
I'm afraid the argument can go on for ever, whether in
If passengers fire from a closed vehicle and any of them do not have a Saving throw of 2+ or 3+
"any" means
passengers in general
or
firing passengers.

Someone remind me of my 7th grade English... Is that what is refered to as a dangling participle?

Somewhere in south-central England.

The meaning is quite clear to me. The "any of them" is a subsidiary clause to "if passengers fire" and refers to the passengers firing, not all the passengers, or the vehicle.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Yep, that's pretty much how I read it.

Seems a little wierd... but that's what it says.
