A "how close are my buddies" rule would be great actually, yeah!

Da Boss,

Don't orks already do this? I mean, don't they have a "Mobbin' Up" rule or something that their LD is directly based upon how many guys are in their unit?

I mean, you're the orc player, shouldn't you have seen that

Of course, Orks have it. But it doesn't effect combat resolution. I think the other armies should have it too though.
Not exactly the same, but something!

Although I'll admit I've never played WHFB before, I have seen games and have done quite a bit of research in it after starting 40k and have considered playing (oh how I wish I had the money!). I think it's very difficult to try and compare the tactics of one system to the other - not because FB has more tactics, or that they're more complicated, but that they're nothing like one another.

As far as I've seen FB's game tables are akin to barren lifeless fields when compared to even the most sparsely covered 40K table, as far as terrain is concerned. It is therefore much easier to discuss tactics through the internet when both armies are going to (generally) be fielding rectangular shaped units on a rectangularly shaped table. But the terrain in 40k, and the positioning of your units relative to that terrain, is where many of the tactics of 40k seem to come in to play in my area. Especially considering loose unit formations and the necessity of static elements. Obviously you try to do simple things like shoot the choppy ones and chop the shooty ones - that goes for both systems. But tactics in 40k - just like in real life infantry combat - revolve around the positioning of heavy and squad weapons. Those types of weapons always have been and always will be the infantry squad's real casualty producers - and I'm glad it's the same way in 40K.

I would also like to point out that the way modern soldiers are trained, they do not break and run at the sight of casualties. Maybe I shouldn't bring this back up after reading the rest of the thread, but yes, if a squad of soldiers suffers bad casualties, and is outnumbered, I find it very doubtful that they will pack up and run. A fighting, organized retreat - sure. I don't think there's a problem with the game system in that regard. A soldier today - and I imagine a soldier in the the 41st millenium - knows that there is more to the battle at hand then what is directly in front of him, and has the training to act accordingly. Of course, this is all just my opinion and experience.

The greenskins have not mastered the art of space travel because they do not care where they are going, only that they get to kill something when they get there.

Well, yeah, modern soldiers don't flee wholesale for a variety of reasons. But they do tend to drop prone and return fire when shot at, rather than running forward heedlessly. But the point of 40K is not to be an accurate war simulator, it's to be a fun and challenging game. And for me, introducing some of the rules we've been discussing would make it more fun and challenging.

Tough Tyrant Guard

The beast was just over the hill, I new and I think he new it as well. It was coming and was going to do things to the marines that they had faced before, countless times. This was a time of men, time of honour, five men required to draw the beat into the trap. Five men would go onto the walls deep in the halls to be place there. There named etched for all times to show that they put the chapter first, they put the human race first. These five men moved up closer to the hill while the other three units moved to flank the beast once he moved up. The trap was set, the bait put forth for the beast.

The beast landed and with in a few seconds, it had removed the marines standing and waiting. It had taken each one and removed it from this world. The seeds inside each marines would be collect, they would return to the chapter with honour.  The beast looked up and charged forward into the the unit of men only to find that they had been waiting for it. Its almost as if the beast had changed, it looked at these men differently then it did before. Almost as if fear, fear had fallen unto the beast. The Hive Tyrant screams as the other came out of hiding. The beast called unto its army, reinforce me, surround me. Thou the gaunts pulled up in a scuttle, the fate of the beast was sealed a long time ago. The five soldier did their job well, they will be etched unto the WALL OF LIFE. The WALL OF LIFE shall stand, shall speak, shall tell stories for the next marines to see. They next generation of the Green Marines will know that they gave unto the chapter. That they put the human race first........

I dont know about you guys but I have yet to see an army like mine. Tactic, you talk as if there are no tactics in this game. Countless time I have used tactics on setup, movement, mental tactics, all kinds of tactics.

Tactics..........

Mental tactics would be to see my army. I have seen countless faces just shutter at the fact of facing this army.

Movement, 300 was a great movie and I know you have all read up about numbers and bringing there numbers to bear on themselves. Well I charged up five men in the jaws up death knowing that the gully needed to be packed. The gaunts at the head of the Nid charged found five men. After the assault, the pile in filled the gaps and force the enter nid army to move around the side. Thus each unit had to enter difficult terrian in order to advance.  These five men lasted four turns hacking and slashing threw the 32 gualts before the winged beast found them. They to will be etched onto the WALL OF LIFE.  I set these five men up seeing how he was setting up. I new that I just might be able to set up a trap. It worked flawlessly,,,,

Setup, well it sounds like most of you see this as a tactic.
