Conceding a game of 40k is:
Never acceptable, it is bad sportsmanship
Something that *should* be done when you know that you will likely be defeated ( an obligation of good sportsmanship )
Something in between an obligation to concede and never conceding. Please explain

hey GWAR, last friday i was playing a game and had to conceed during shooting phase of turn 2 (my shooting) because 2 of my friends were about ready to break eachothers heads in and i thought it would be a better idea to try and break it up than let them go ahead and do it...

would you class THIS as a black and white "YOU aren't going to the hospital" issue?

-----

personally i think it's more to do with the person, if they seem like a reasonable person and they suddenly pack up and conceed early in the game with no reason whatsoever, they probably have one, just that it doesn't concern you.

if you know them and know they wouldnt do it without a reason i think its fine...

if they seem like an incredible idiot and do it at random... then its time to tell them fo f-off. though when i tell people too they seem to think im just having a friendly joke... it took me almost a month to get through one idiot...

At the opposite end of the scale, who "plays another turn" when the match is over?

Theres been alot of times when the game ends on turn 5 and one of us has just about won/drew or its been a bitter stalemate. We usually say "Good game you won/drew. Wonder what would have happened with one more turn though?" "Dunno, fancy playing on and finding out?"

Obviously not all games end up like this (I just tabled you.....fancy another turn doing nothing?) but sometimes we just got to know what would of happened with one more turn!

The right criteria for conceding, to me, has little to do with the state of the game. The questions to ask are:

1. How much fun are you having/would you rather be doing something else?
2. How much fun do you think your opponent is having/would your opponent rather be doing something else?
3. Are you affecting anyone other than you or your opponent by conceding?

Prioritize which is the most important to you at the time. For example, in a tournament, you affect all of the players by conceding, so you had better be having a miserable time in order for conceding to be acceptable. In a casual game, if neither you or your opponent is having fun, concede, even if you are winning as long as you or your opponent, you think, won't mind.

Obviously, this strategy will only work when playing with people you can judge the attitudes of/close friends since judging that a player won't mind if you concede revolves around knowing how your opponent feels about concessions.

When you can't judge how much fun your opponent is having because you don't know them or can't read them, I'd only concede when when you judge you are losing too badly to have any fun on your part.

Personally, I really enjoy playing from behind, so I hardly ever give up. I just like to see what I can do with the units I have left.

I have only once called the game when I was ahead, and that was against a really close friend who was getting really frustrated by my wood elves dancing around his bretonnians all game. The next time we played, I came with a less shooty variety and we had a much better time.

This was (in different places) said already, but this is pretty much how I feel. I've conceded games because I was getting tired, not having much fun, and pretty sure I was going to lose. I've also continued playing, knowing I don't have a chance, because the game was still moving quickly and I was having a good time regardless. It's pretty darn situational. Odds are if you wouldn't want to play me after I conceded, you'd probably be getting under my skin -anyways- so, really, you're just doing both of us a favor. So far I haven't run into anyone that obnoxious, but I also mostly only play with friends, so who knows. Maybe one day I'll meet the mythical TFG.
