Then you have your Tau stuff, all it takes is Macross....

Top one is battletech. A Rifleman mech. Second one is Macross I guess.

Both were from Macross/Robotech. The Rifleman was the Raider-X.

They were both from this http://www.mahq.net/mecha/macross/macross.htm It's in the first one called ADR-04-Mk.X Destroid Defender. I've never heard of Battletech, though.

Basically a western company copied stoled the macross designs , and claimed it as their own .
N.Americans grew up thinking they were original design ( guessing the lack of internet in those days arnt helping either )

Wiki for the better worded explanation xD

So , i feel bad for the fans that sticks to "Tau is copied from western mecha not anime"

Did not know that. Anyways the Rifleman made its first appearence in 1984 so I guess Macross is a bit older (battletech is still better imho).

Anyways I do not think Tau is based on Battletech or Macross...at least not much. The difference between mechs and battlesuits are too different.

If anything 'Crisis' suits are closer to the Elemental power armor in battletech, and even that is not really that close. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elemental_(Battletech)

Is the army copied from any one source of anime? No.

Is the overall look and theme of the army heavily influenced by anime and Japanese designs in general? Hell Yes.

It's how far you're willing to take it.

BT (and not all of them were lifted from Macross, those don't look like the mechs in my Battletech classic compendium) were based on Japanese Designs, and GW based the Tau on those and other designs while making it blocky and very un-Japanese.

You can probably trace ALL piloted bipeda mecha back to Mazinger Z.

None of this changes the fact that Space Marines and Eldar look more like the Japanese designs than the Tau do with their Rockman and Guyver suits respectively.

I was talking about those hovering suits they have (Crisis suits?) they don't look like they're too far from a generic design in Macross, the rest of the army definitely has very little to do with the designs in that. That Wikipedia article doesn't have pictures. Japanese mecha was kind of more blocky early one, the more recent ones are more rounded and human appearence while the western ones haven't dropped the blocky design and remained with the huge blocky mass of metal and gears and have gone with a more mechanical approach. The difference is the Japanese ones seem to be going for a more human-like appearence while the Western ones want to keep that basic machine appearence. Both can look cool at times, but going by this Dreadnoughts are a Western approach while the hovering suits of the Tau are definitely a Japanese approach.

Also, thank you LunaHound for the explanation.

Aaah, one I forgot.

Tau are based on the RIFTS Triax Mecha who in turn are based on Madox Metal Skin Panic (anime)

There you are, the connection is there!

Eldar do have a very "japanese" feel to them. Hell, in 2nd edition, they all had Samurai back banners!
