Believe me, around here it happens all the time. Though it has to do with fantasy words not being common material in the mandatory English classes. A red shirt had the greatest difficulty to tell me to buy Archaon (Argh-eee-oooon according to him) or Catachans (KA-HA-HANZ).

Erm, not quite. I pronounce it with a hard C , so it become Ka-tan. Though I'm only taking Dawn of War as a precedent, so you should probably take that with a pinch of salt.

Also, on the whole laz/lays debate, I've had a chat with JJ and he pronounces it laz-gun. I think that, considering how he invented the word 'n all, that is how it should be said...

In other news, kye-meh-rah, tir-an-id, and lee-man. I've never heard them pronounced any other way, at least not around here

I'm not a linguist. Though I was briefly "hooked on phonics" during grade school. Why does the C in C'Tan default to the hard C sound as in car or candy? Why not the soft C in celery or citrus. The distinction between a hard or soft sounding C is the following vowel. Is it because the hard sounds outnumbers the soft sound in vowel pairs (A O and U)? Seriously I was never taught rules for just a single C without any following vowels except when I was taught to pronounce the letter itself (C = sea). Therefore that's the way I pronounce it. Is there something in the english language that defines this scenario differently? I'm asking a serious question because now I'm concerned I'm mistaken and I hate looking foolish in public. I will identify myself a hyprocrite though since I do pronounce Cthulhu as Keh-thul-hu. I'm thinking the sound is ambiguous and up to the originator of the word to define. Both words are deliberately constructed to appear alien, and therefore composed of irregular and maybe at the time undefined phonetic combinations.

I've never been happy with this aspect of the language. I'm not sure if it's just been made muddy by years of misunderstandings, mixed languages and dialects, but seriously take the word Celtic.

Usually for exceptions to this rule you would look at the latin root...but there is no latin root word for C'Tan. I think alot of people assume they are referencing Satan though.

I totally agree with you. Even more so for the obvious reference of Satan. I have always viewed the C in C'Tan as a seperate entity....and we all know ( I hope ) how the letter C sounds when performing the alphabet...a,b,c...

Based on that how can the C in C'Tan sound anything other than SeeTan?

However.....we should not forget the advent of Social convention....and if the majority (educated and logical or not, as the case may be ) deem to called the word KuhTan....then thats what we'd have to follow.

In Ciaphas Cain, there is the answer.

He is talking to someone (probably a techpriest, can't remember) who says that Shadowlight was made by a race known in Gothic as ther C'tan or Katarn. He makes some comment like 'Thank the Emporer it's not those damned necrons'

By the way, its Ky-meh-rah and Tih-rah-nids.

The debate rages on...

Chimera is pronounced with the hard C at the beginning instead of the obvious ch sound like in change or choose because of the greek/latin roots. It's an exception to the rules. I will say that even then a more compelling arguement would be what about words like BACK, TACT and PICK. In all those words we default to the hard C sound. Though this still doesn't answer the question of how you pronounce a single C seperated by an apostrophe.

I believe the pronunciation in Dawn of War added with Mekboy's comment about the dialogue in Ciaphas Cain seem to suggest that C'tan would sound similar to Katarn and therefore it would be pronounced with a hard C sound. Whether it's correct or not that seems to be the prevailing pronunciation in the expanded fluff. Let's ask Yakface to throw this question in with the IG FAQ questions to see if we can get an answer
