Yeah, no one should let a buddy start the army that gets constant nice new models, updated rules and varied and interesting options...wait, what?

Playing Space Marines is the best customer experience so if you want to get someone into the game that's a damn decent place to start.

That said, I always just tell folks to start the army who's models and army design/conception they like best.

Let them pick whatever army they want just give them a brief background and tactical roundup of each army and let them decide from there.

We don't really have so many Marine players here that I worry about what people are playing.

When I into the game I started with Space Marines, and I feel that they are a good starting army because they are a well balanced army, and offer a wide array of choices and options for new players to chose from. so to answer the original question, I would suggest Space Marines as a good starting army.

Current Armies:
Invaders (Salamanders Sub-Chapter) A few vairous scratch built models
Just getting started A few models with more to come

Hrm, when I posted this I felt prompted to do so by seeing a GW staff member pretty much push a Space Marine Battleforce into a kid's hands... but now I think about it, the kid (about 8 or something) had skipped merrily into the store yelling "MY FRIEND COLLECTS SPACE MARINES! I WANT TO SEE SPACE MARINES!"

Thought I'd give the whole 'Blogger' lark a go...
-Cadian 812th (rotting in a cupboard)
-Dark Angels 3rd Company (in disfavour, eBay?)
-Irun'Mahn (pretty and deserve love; why aren't I giving them it?)
-Draigo 'n' his Merry Band (to be continued) - How to magnetise Grey Knight strike squads' two-handed and special weapons
-The Maggot Host
Klan WurldWaagh -Are now in my first P&M blog! If you like the idea of WW2 and Orks, please take a look...

I would rather someone started playing SM and then gradually moved further into the hobby than being 'directed' to try some other race and losing interest.

Seriously, letting someone decide how to spend their time and money? Letting them choose what interests them and what they want to play on their own? Feth that, we'll force our own prejudices on them or run them out of the shop!

You should never steer someone away from an army they like it is their choice. Anyone who think they should just want an easy win as they have been beaten by space marine Armour save to often

There's a reason SMs are in every starter box with each edition; they are the starter army. They are cheap, flexible, and relatively foolproof. You can get your foot in the door with the hobby for little down and from there, as you play other people, can add an army or two. Hard to encourage other stuff that require more financial investment, especially on the "must have" units. Hell, I play orks, it's 95% plastic, and it's still expensive because you need so many damn orks!
