Subject: Does the more models you have, make you a bigger failure at life?
I'm divorced, I live at with my mom because her nerves went south after my father died. Is that an issue? I hope it is. Please tell me you have an issue with that so I can laugh at you some more.
That said, I'm doing just fine being single, living at home with my mom, and able to afford to have a hobby and a social life now that I've divorced and gone through bankruptcy because of the dog I used to be married to. Things would be absolutely perfect if my moms house was in an area where I didn't have to rely on cellular for internet.
And you(OP) have about a 50/50 shot of ending up exactly where I was.
Good Luck. You'll need it.

Perhaps the real question should be, do gamers buy too much... period. If you stop and look at all the atuff you have, all the different armies and systems, how often do you get to play them?
I only go to play once a weeek at my club and sometimes I did get a game or I was not able to make, so you could knock off say 15 sessions. This leaves me with 37 days a year to play, plus a couple of all dayers. At one time I had 6 systems, and I know that is way less than most of the guys at the club, and I found myself not getting the chance to play most of them. How on earth the guys who have ten plus systems get to make full use of them I can't work out.
Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Basically what the OP is saying is that gamers have no life. In case you hadn't noticed we're all gamers. Basically you're asking us to confess that we gave no life. You're not going to get much support on a gamer's forum.
There are plenty of people who do non have a partner or live with thier mum and dad that aren't gamers. No i don't think that the amount of models affects how much you fail at life.

I don't do so good at that game, the one where I go to an office for 8 hours a day and have to prevent myself strangling petty people who use phrases like 'quick win', 'low hanging fruit', 'add value factor' and 'information cascade leading to organic rollout'. That game sucks ass.

I'm 6'1", play collegiate football, have a 4.0 GPA, scored 99.99% percentile on the LSAT, have two girlfriends and have a part-time job as a underwear model.
Everybody look at how much I'm not a loser.
Do your girlfriends know about the other?
Back to the post. I don't think the original poster ment it to be serious. I think he was trying to make it funny or light hearted, but failed with the title. I see why people got offended with the title. But I think he ment the sterotypical what people think of the gamers community. Basicaly most people summed it up. When you are single and living at the parents home, you have lots of expendable cash, but once in a relationship or married, that expendable income for most people are gone. What people do in their spare time is different for everyone. As one poster said, some people, paint, others get hammered and drunk.

Or at least not so much of a dud. Or is MGS just trying to find his own source of shallow external validation?

@Howlingmoon: Ya I think you entirely missunderstood what I was asking people in this one. No one is knocking you for moving home to take care of your mom. You moved out and made something of yourself initially so you fall no where near that cat.
@warpcrafter: I know the feeling I was telling off my brother yesterday who lives at home with mom and is almost 30. He was knocking on me for picking up university of pheonix. My responce was I dropped out of college to take care of my family. I own my own home and work 40+ hours a week, so please go ahead knock on me. Plus he was looking at 10 years in a federal pen for dealing so ya HE IS A FAILURE AT LIFE.
@avantgarde: NICE just nice man!
Now as someone said earlier this was more of a lighthearted wanted to gauge reaction type thing. I think a bunch of people aren't reading into this as I had hoped so let me clarify a bit more, as I was suprised to show up to work and read all of this at 630am(I am so not a mourning person.... Damn army).
Truthfully I care less about most of your lives, it's sounds to me like most of you have great solid lives, and you just like to enjoy your hobbies. Hell everyone in this world does. I was more trying to put the thought out there as I was curious with other people. Now I have encountered gamers who didn't know what the word shower means, and gamers who make 6 figures(im working towards that too personally), and all the inbetween. What convinced me to post, and I had a feeling people would take it wrong ,hence in my opening I stated this won't sound right, was the fact that I was stuck in traffic thinking about the Gorgon spartan army deal a friend just bought, and how he buys tons and tons of models without a care because he doesn't have bills. He lives with his grandparents and doesn't have a job. Then I thought about when I had a lot more toys, and a lot less responcibility, and some friends who are and were the same way. So I wanted to see more if this was an actual occurance or just sheer luck. So take it however you want live your life how you want, and great. Im not going to judge, in fact what it really comes down to is a slow day in the office and I figured this topic would pass some time, and get some interesting insite into other gamers.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Having read most of the responses to the forum I can see why Empchild could have for lack of a better phrase 'poked an angry bear with a stick'. I can also see the reason for his curiosity. I am a serving soldier in the Britsh army for 6 years. I have been playing 40k since I was 12. I still got White dwarf shipped out to me while I was in Helmand. some of the lads who saw me reading it gave me the sort of look that a paedophile would get being a lollipop lady outside a primary school. They think I'm a failure because I paint models. Some however think my painting is awesome and it has inspired them to go out and but a few models themselves. It's a double edged sword I guess. But as long as I'm happy I don't give a F@@K what people say or think. I enjoy it, I enjoy drinking beer and playing 40K with guys (and the odd lady) who also enjoy the hobby. I also have a wife (who would love to torch my beloved troops) and a little boy (who would love to chew my beloved troops). Life is about choices and my choice is entirely mine.

If I'm reading this right, this sentence defines being a loser way more than having lots of figures.

I believe that the question is a very stereotypical view and is wrongly assumed because of the general price of the models. I have a job (at fourteen; an achievement nowadays) a have a budget in the later 100's. Does this mean I spend it all? No. Does this mean I am excessive rich? The opposite. I have many friends and go into town with them, not to go to the GW (which none of my friends do bar 1) but go out with girls. I would not call the 'sad'.
I really do hate the fact that you mention Warhammer in general that people who have never even collected or played have the right to say your sad, you have no life or call you a nerd.

Funny Bash you just reminded me Ihave a pic from 2005 of me in front of my bunker in Iraq holding WD 300th issue(for the states), but yes I had comrades look at me funny initially in the army but they got into some of it too. Hell my fiance is HUGE into mario(saves me tons of money believe me). I was an atypical gamer and know quite a few now. I was more curious how many were really out their. Now we have had 60 something responces? with what almost 1k views of the thread. Now for those of you that posted you obviously don't fit into this cat. and COOL, but what about those that didn't. Maybe I am right to a point and some just don't want to admit that. Maybe I am so far wrong and the genre of gamer has changed from that dirty nasty troll inthe basement. As stated over and over it's all a matter of perception.

@aromasin,I completely understand what you mean by being called a geek or a weirdo for collecting minis by people who have never even built an airfix plane! But thats the way life is sadly. I'm no angel, I've dished out grief to lads who spend more time on their hair than their girlfriends. I'll also grief blokes who call pink shirts 'salmon', or laugh at guys who wear white lofers with cord trousers, or Chavs (Brits will know what I mean)......Its all swings and round abouts. Anyway the real failures are those who go on the Jeremy Kyle show (again its a brit thing, look it up on you-tube rest of the world)
@Empchild, talk about small world mate.I was in Al Amarah, about 160 miles south of Baghdad in 2005. 'twas my first tour....long time ago now or feels that way.

Or, you are completely wrong, and taking your envy out on other gamers.
If someone wants to own 'way too many models' (and surely that would not be an unfair assessment in many situations), that does little besides take up a lot of room in their living space. If I had the space, and the tools, I would be filling that space with a ridiculous amounts of toys. Some people like gadgets, and have 'too many of them', some people like models, and 'have way too many of them'. In neither of these scenarios do these people automatically become 'losers'.
There are people with 'way too much' of any given set of objects, ranging the gambit from Orchids, to dogs, to vehicles. I have an extremely hard time imagining you actually thinking of people in any of those 'hobbies' I just mentioned, as 'failures at life'. You appear to overlook the fact that you are being pretty goddamn offensive.
Everyone should watch this talk from Adam Savage (Mythbuster host), where he pretty openly explains his 'particular' obsession. If you compare what he says to many other peoples situations, you can see exactly why people do things, just to do things. Adam Savage is not a frakking 'loser', he is awesome as all hell.

Waaaa? So to some this topic may be taboo or offensive, and I ask who cares. Their is always gonna be something said that offends someone and I care less honestly. Everyone cares less because we still say what we think. All I did that you and so many are seeming to forget, is ask a QUESTION HENCE THE BIG QUESTION MARK IN THE TITLE!!!!! on an observation, and wanted to see what other thought about it. It was a simple hey my flgs isn't really like that, bUTTTTT we may have one who is, or say yep that pretty much is some of our guys. The funny thing is this was yesterday and it seems when the thread starts to die down some pius person (such as yourself) has to come and stir the pot. Take the QUESTION (theirs that word again) however you darn well please, and I care less what you think of me honestly. In the end it really doesn't matter. Hell Micheal Moore Insults our nation, and we give him a freaking oscar, I ask a question and I even put head to the wind and you people jump over me like white on rice. Here's my opinon those of you who are the most offended by this is because you either were that stereotypical gamer or still are. Their happy PEACE IM OUT!

If you're measuring certain individuals' 'success' based on how they measure up to you or you're own standard of living; I'd say you really need to get off your high horse.
Success or Failure at life is not measured by the number of miniatures you own. Or for that matter, Vintage cars, works of Art, balls of lint or anything that would be a 'hobby'.
