The metal model is a far nicer looking model. Unfortunately, assembly on that massive behemoth is atrocious. If I had it all to do over again, I'd get the new plastic one with the less detailing (if I was going to drop that kind of cash on a Dread).

As for the new models, I think the Kans area a good deal (at about $15 a piece), but that Deff Dread is a bit too pricey. Thank God for internet discounts (which will bring it CLOSE to reasonable).

OMG!! Those kans and the deff dread are amazing!!!! I'm buying a kit of each!!! (ah, just realised i don't have £57 to spend). Seriously though, the models are very good and are tons better than the hard to assemble ones that we have currently.

Oh, and olympia, deff dreads aren't crappy and they had a model before.

I had a chance to buy a metal one for only about $20 at a Bizarre Bazaar and still passed it up. I'm done with five pound lumps of metal after assembling such monstrosities for nearly 20 years. I'm looking forward to the plastic one even if it's a little less ace looking. Overall I think it has a good look and being plastic it's easy to customize with cool bits from other Warhammer kits or custom converted plastic parts using styrene plastic from Plastruct or Evergreen.

Agreed.

As it IS possible, I'd have preferred the plastic one be a copy of the current metal one or, possibly, a near-copy with only slight variations.

Kans look awesome, Deff dreds legs suck IMO, no detail, no function... they just look lazy and tacked on...

SM vendread... christ can't they do something better? It's time to update the entire design of the dreads, and I despise the whole peek-a-boo head in the sarcophogus theme that so many have now... some FW dreads look ok with it, but honestly, the GW vens just look slowed... IMO

Dear god, that venerable dread kit.... "zog me itz bootiful"

Seriously though, wish they had more (and better) shots of the sprues- im still pretty torn on buying one.

SO far...

1) Killa Kans look FANTASTIC!
2) Deff Dread - box art version looks better, I wonder what other 'look' options will be in there?
3) ONE Flashgit? Er, OK...
4) NO variants in the 'new' Basilisk Box = no sale
5) "New" Chimera = excuse to sell accessory sprue separately = no sale

Still, those plastic Kans are awesome!

Oops!

Forgot:

6) Plastic Venerable Dread = not as embarrassingly stupid as the metal version, but still can't hold a candle to the FW versions!

Pretty much agreed on all counts. I have a stack of Chimeras now and will not be rushing to replace them with the new. Also I'm more interested in Manticores, Colossus and Medusae than Basilisks so will pass.

The Kans are probably the most tempting thing in the lot right now for me.

I love the Kans and with a Maelstrom discount they are a bargain compared to the old metal ones. The Dredd I am not so sure about, there is something about it which oddly makes me think of a Necron wraith, probably the glam rock shoulder pads it's sporting. The direct only nob is cool but not entirely sure that it fits that well with the rest of the range, the gun looks a little warhammer rather then 40k to me.

As for the Imperial releases I am underwhelmed and dissapointed that they chose to "update" two kits which were perfectly fine to begin with when there are massive holes in the product range, surely a deathstrike missile launcher and a manticor would have been a better way to go?

With the venerable dred it looks fine but again quite underwhelming and highly frustrating to chaos players

I will probably grab at least two boxes of Kans

Makes me want to play Orks, and only the tiniest bit sad that I got a project IG army for my birthday, only because it precludes me from being able to justifiably start another army. (for now...)

Venerable Dreadnought =

I just can't get behind the marine-sized head. I like my sarcophagi flat, rectangular, and consisting of a single riveted vision slit with lots of devotional engravings beneath. Here's hoping they have options for the 'classic look'.

*edit* Just saw the full frame... so much for that. Venerable is full of fail. Are they serious with the permanently engraved combat theaters on the left side? Are all venerables required to fight in those locations before getting certified. Sigh.

Chimera getting all Codex hull & turret variants is a good thing - still having the lasguns, not-so-good.

Basilisk not getting any other variants, downright stupid.

OK so there is a Chimera Heavy stubber. Yay!

I also see some nice Heresy era termi shoulder pads in that vendread kit!

@Endova, Chaosing it requires a lot of filing off eagles and such and lots of greenstuff and lots of bitz and lots of platicard.

It's like asking why Ork players want vehicles when they can just loot Imperial ones.

I think the fact i love the deff dread and killa kanz, despite absolutely hating the paint scheme, is a very good sign.

The vendread *could* be converted to chaos, but it'd take a lot of filing off of all the iconography (unless you're Word Bearers). Still annoying that they've made 4 dread kits for space marines, but us chaos players are stuck with a metal model that's been in the hobby longer than i have (14 years, give or take). Without a level of converting skill i've not achieved yet, converted marine dreads don't quite fit with the chaos army.

I'm really impressed with those new Ork releases. I was just expecting the old designs made in plastic. Shame I'm out of space in my Ork case, but I think my wallet will thank me later. Also, 3 Killa Kans for like $40 is an insane bargain when it comes to GW prices. I'd expect their price to go up.

Venerable dreadnought is very, very meh to me. Some nice detailing, but nothing that really impresses me all that much. Then again, I have the old metal one lying around in a case somewhere, and I'd never force that model on anybody. Such a pain to assemble.

Happy that the Chimera has a stubber on the sprue. I was really worried there for a second. Basilisk is a huge missed opportunity.

Ork releases: looks all good
Basilisk: looks like no other artillery options? Will definitely not be buying this.
Chimera: If the price increases or the accessory sprue is dropped, no more chimeras for me. Looks like this is the case though. One nice thing is the turret being made a little less wimpy.
Venerable dread: nowhere near as good as the forgeworld dreads, the head is weird and the engraving looks a bit off, but overall pretty okay. Looking at it now it's weird, I hated the old one but I'm not sure if I like the old one or the new one better.

Mildly disappointed in the Kans box, in so far as it only comes with one of each ranged weapon. On the bright side, should you buy a Deff Dredd as well, you get spares of 'Eavy Shootas and Rokkits, so not a dead loss. Other than that lovely lovely models!

Nice kits, I was at first a bit meh on the DD, that red and yellow build looks a bit off, the area behind the head kills it as someone already said but the black Goff build that we saw in the teaser is fantastic so good sense on their part for putting that one on the cover. :p

The kit itself is very nice, great to finally get more heavy weapons in plastic, KMB's and skorchas are all well and good but I'm really pleased to finally be able to get more rokkit launchas, was fed up of vehicle kits always coming with eavy shootas, lol.

No doubt whatsoever on the kanz, they are fantastic and much more nasty looking now!

The flash git isn't bad but not as flash as the kustoms I have in mind (I hoped for a big coat as is described in the dex) for my army which will be built with a variety of 3rd party bits and pieces. He would make a great nob though and hopefully his squig can be re purposed for use elsewhere.

No sign of this scenery kit though, guess we'll have to wait a bit longer for that

Oh, the kanz are even better then I thought, more rokkit launcas, a grot zoooka and a big drill for the obvious gurren lagann conversions.

Actually, the CCW's are pretty sick all around, whoever did the nobz big choppas must have really been given free reign to do whatever they wanted, lol.

Very dissapointed in the deff dreds legs, especially as I was hoping to use them as the base for a mega armoured warboss.

Could the Basilisk be any more lame? A significant jump in price and it's just the Chimera body sprue with the old Bassie cannon sprue and (oddly) an accessory sprue thrown in. Pathetic.

Chimera kit is nice - I like how the Chimera sprue essentially has everything from the Vehicle Accessory Sprue on it.

Ven Dread is nice... but I do hope the kit allows you to build all the weapon arms, and not just one of the gun arms.

Dread is nice. Kanz are nice.

I'm having a hard time deciphering those sprues...where exactly is the Grotzooka? I hope to god they included a Grotzooka on that frame!

Also, how many of each weapon can you find in the Ork Dread frames? I see two Rokkits for sure, but I'm only spotting one Big Shoota off the bat?

Can anyone with eagle eyes do a weapon type/count on those frames?

The Ork Dread is really cool. though I'm not sure I want one in my army. I was going to buy the mega dread from Forgeworld.

I'm not entierely sold on the kans. They look good, but I think I want to build my own. Maybe some kitbashing is in order.
And to be honest, why didn't they include parts for a kustom mega blasta? It's the best option the kans have.
Love the little drill though.

The Flash Git is a very cool model and I definetly want him in my army, but he doesn't look at all how I imagined and build them. Still, he's too awesome not to use, maybe I'll just make him a regular Nob.

Well, time to drag my Orks out of storage.

Regarding the Venerable Dreadnought: Why oh why couldn't they learn from the metal debacle and make a "blank" that players could add various add-on embossments (a la Forgeworld) rather than that over-wrought work on the sarcophagus. They even got it right with the guns!

They also got the feet wrong!

As a former chaos player, I'd say its the fact that you can look around and see how GW has improved the models of every single army (with some exceptions, but those are equally annoyed), improving quality to build and aesthetic. That if you took that same effort and applied it to produce distinctly chaos models you would give Chaos awesome models to replace the evermore sub-par ones. While any chaos player could convert an imperial model the vast majority wouldn't compare to a truly chaos model that incoporates all the details of the chaos aesthetic. Just imagine how much more interesting a Chaos rhino and its derivatives could be if the surface were covered with actual embossed chaos runes and premodeled wear and tear, while incorporating aspects of preheresy design on to it. Instead of gluing little squares with spikes poping out. Or even just a dreadnought that isn't just a big block of metal. Why has the Marine codex swelled to almost double that of the Chaos Marines while simultaneously the chaos codex shrank and leaves the army playing a single lash spaming list. Chaos players have the same feelings Xenos players do; left out.
