WarEagle wrote:Wow Great Battle reports, and I must say your terrain + conversions + painting is amazing, seeing it all on the table like that looks as good or maybe better than any whitedwarf battle report even if they have superb camera tech.

The Battle scenarios and reports where very fun to read and also very fluffy, my fav was the IG platoon with the mine field game, It felt very much like a spread to thin IG army told to hold a section of wall at all costs., the mine field and gun emplacements really added the extra effect to make it feel like a real wall defense battle.

Lastly I am very glad to read and see the friendly 40k campaign being written out and planed so fluffily with less regard to rules and more regard to fun and story. My 40k group has slowly moved from having campaigns with story to just tournament lists and battles just to rack up wins, and while competitive games are fun I miss good old campaigns like this.
I remember years ago when my steel legion threw themselves repeatedly against a city controlled by necrons and kept getting pushed out, but I was able to tie up the necrons long enough for some SM armys to come and save me and the city, tho the campaign ended up with Chaos winning lol.

Yeah, The campaign/scenario style play is what always drew me to wargaming, and is what I most enjoy.

They seem to be enjoying the story element as well, which makes it worth it.

I figure if my boys keep playing as they get older they can always play tournaments, etc. if they want to, but it isn't the direction I feel they need to be pushed at this age when they are so new to the game.

My most memorable games are ones from campaigns.

*nods* So true, I always remember epic Campaign battles, and esily forget a tournament one, tho there have been 2 tournament battles I always remember and am proud of.

and as you said, they should have allot more fun with a good "draw you in" story that they can help change and write than ust winning and silly braging. I like being able to look back and tell little side storys for each little epic thing in the game like a single long missle launcher killing a hammer head

Likewise.

Life has been a little busy as of late, but with Summer here we should be getting a campaign update in soon...

Just wanted to post an update for those following along as real life and summer has slowed things down with the campaign, but we are still planning to carrying on with it.

Preparations for or next installment are in the works (really trying to only use painted models), with a goal of posting it up by summer's end (Need time to get a few more things painted, play the game and do post production/report).

The next campaign battle will be a Spearhead engagement on the outskirts of Golov, with Cadian defenders (with a VERY LARGE ace up their sleeve) trying to hold off a marauding Dred mob led by Big Mek Gugnutz.

Here are a few teaser pics for now:

Cadians once again holding the perimeter, but this time the tanks have arrived:

The Dred Mob approaches:

Stay tuned...

++ Da' Wrath Uv' Gugnutz:

++ Big Mek Gugnutz reveled in the smell of burning fuel and the ground shaking clank of da dreds and kans that filled his ears as his Deff Mob stomped toward the outskirts of da 'umie city. The Stompa at the point of the mob of ork walkers towered above him, it's arsenal of guns already beginning a steady cacophony of thunderous blasts as overeager gun crews began to try to range in their first targets.

++ As the Dred Mob closed the distance it didn't take long for the Stompa to draw the fire of many of the enemy, and lascannon and missile impacts blossomed all over the Stompa. Such was this initial volley of enemy fire that the Stompa's power field actually failed under the barrage, much to Gugnutz's annoyance. "Get dat' field backup ya gitz" he yelled, kicking a passing grot who strayed too close to it's master. The mobs of ork boyz drawn to follow the Dred mob began to yell and fire erratically as they started to make out the silhouettes of the enemy in the smokey gloom ahead.

++Gugnutz knew It was time to test his handywork out on the 'umies and show da Warboss that he was the best Mek of da lot. He bellowed the attack order as enemy fire began to whistle into the Ork formation, much of it impacting upon the forcefield generated from the massive device upon his back. "Waaaagh!!!"

++Commander Griffin observed the Approaching orks through his magnoculars from the cupola of the Baneblade carefully concealed just within the city perimeter. The Orks had taken the bait and moved to attack what appeared to be a lightly defended entry gate. Even now a mechanized spearhead of Ultramarines was encircling the approaching greenskins. When the noose was closed the target of their deception: the ork known as Gugnutz would be eliminated and the Ork's ability to manufacture their warmachines vastly reduced. Praise the Emperor.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For this campaign battle we decided to try our hand at the Spearhead rules.

We decided to do a 3000pt. battle so we could squeeze in just about every vehicle and walker we owned as the boys wanted to play a big battle.

The Spearhead mission is "Breakthrough" using "Counter-attack" deployment. Orks are the attackers.

The sanity (or lack thereof) of choosing this size game will likely reveal itself as we play the game out...

Big Mek Gugnutz's Dred Mob approach the outskirts of Golov with a gaggle of ork boyz mobs following in it's wake:

The Imperial Defenders (A mix of Cadians and Ultramarines) watch the orks approach from the city outskirts:

Pask, commanding a vanquisher leads a Tank Hunter Spearhead:

Ultramarines and Cadians take aim:

Imperial Reserves ( A Baneblade Spearhead and an Ultramarines Mechanized Assault Spearhead led by Sgt. Chronus):

The Stompa leads the attack rather than be kept in reserve and takes the obligatory pre-game penetrating hit(knocking down it's power field):

So we now have the game set-up & deployment completed.

We will be playing the game in installments (probably two turns at a time), and presenting them throughout the week until completion.

Stay tuned later tonight for the first installment

Will Gargutz be eliminated?

Will the Imperial reinforcements arrive in time to stop the rampaging Stompa?

Will My sons Cry foul when i unleash the power of this fully armed and operational Kustom Stompa?!?

(To be continued)

++The Wrath Uv' Gugnutz (TURNS 1 & 2):

Praised by the Emperor The Imperial Forces Steal the initiative from the Ork Attackers (Always a good start).

Commander Griffin moves Pask's Tank Hunter Spearhead to a more dispersed formation:

IMPERIAL TURN 1:

The Imperial forces seem to have made taking down the Stompa a priority as they unleash Hell upon it.

The Kustom Force Field of Big Mek Gugnutz stops a slew of pen/glancing hits on the Stompa including: two krak missiles (two glances), two lascannon (pens), and a shot from Pask's Vanquisher that rolled Pen 16 (thanks to pask in a Tank hunter Spearhead getting +2 to pen. rolls and two dice from vanquisher cannon).

Owen(in red) tries to locate the pesky KFF:

However despite it's seeming effectiveness the KFF can't stop everything, and a lascannon pen. from an Ultramarines tactical squad causes a shaken gun crew on the Deff Arsenal, and a hunter killer from a Razorback stuns the Stompa's driver meaning it won't move this turn.

The Imperials would have liked to do more permanent damage, but they take pleasure in knowing the Stompa isn't moving for a turn and the Arsenal is not firing...

ORK Turn 1:
Everything in the ork force runs except for the Stompa (which can't move at all).

Stompa's fire is mostly ineffective. Gaze of Mork does destroy a Leman Russ from pask's Tank Hunter Spearhead (thanks to it becoming a Destroyer hit when Strength rolled for). One shoulder kannon hits but fails to pen.The predator. Other weapons miss or deviate causing no further harm

Not an Impressive display of Orkish destruction.

Gugnutz is NOT amused...

Bird's-eye view of the table end of Turn 1:

---------------------------------------------------

IMPERIALS TURN 2:

A cheer goes up among the Imperial Commanders as the Baneblade arrives from reserve:

Imperials continue to concentrate most of theirl firepower on the Stompa:

The KFF stops a couple of Krak missiles (glances) on the Stompa.

Pask misses the Stompa w/ Vanquisher cannon but pens. w/ lascannon causing drive damage that halves speed of Stompa.
Other Russ deviates battlecannon shot killing two orks near Stompa.

Main gun from Baneblade pens. Stompa and stuns a weapon crew again (Deff Arsenal). Blast is so big it also kills nine orks too close to stompa:

Predator fires all weapons at kans forming acting as bodyguards to the Mega-Dread in a Spearhead formation. One Kan is destroyed and the other is shaken.

ORKS TURN 2:

Repair Krew fails to fix the Stompa's damaged drive and it staggers forward a mere 6"

Most other orks forces run to close the distance except for a squad of kans that fires rokkits at the Demolisher from behind a hill destroying it's Demolisher cannon.

This turns Stompa fire might go down as the worst in 40K history. Most weapons missed, and those that hit failed to glance/pen. including a Belly Gun that scattered the worst possible way and then only created a 7" blast that hurt nothing, and a supa-gatler that rolled double fives (out of ammo on first roll) that only killed one devastator marine due to cover...

The sound of Gugnutz cursing could be heard for miles...

The look of things end of Turn 2:

While the Orks have closed some distance they have failed thus far to inflict any sizable casualties on the Imperial defenders, and there is still a whole Spearhead of Ultramarines led by Chronus flanking from reserve to deal with...

To be continued...

Thanks.

I was really trying to commit myself to fully painted for our batreps, but the boys have been tag-teaming me to play over the past few weeks (especially as we started setting up the board and deploying models) and with the week off it seemed silly not to take advantage of the free time. Playing game= happy kiddos.

Oh. well, as long as we are making progress on the painting front every game I'll feel ok about it.

Now if I can only kill some Imperial stuff before the Stompa goes super nova and nukes most of my own army...

IMPERIAL TURN THREE:

++From the cupola of his command Baneblade Karad Vorsk transmitted his orders across all vox channels: "In the name of the Emperor all guns fire, give them hell!!!"
The Imperial defenders needed little encouragement to do just that. The orks had been closing the distance to their lines rapidly, and every soldier present knew that if the orks got to them that the situation would quickly become a bloodbath. So fire they did, with everything at their disposal...

This turn was very effective for the Imperial defenders as they savaged the Orks in their shooting phase. The Ork strategy for this Mission was to swamp the enemy half, and force the Imperium to play defensively. IF all went well the amount of Ork scoring units in the zone would bring a win, but the Imperium had other plans and proceeded to dismantle my stompy assault with some devastating shooting...

For starters the arrival of the Ultramarines Mechanized assault Spearhead on the defender's left flank brought some death by flamer and rapid firing bolters to the ork boyz:

(Yes we played this wrong, this spearhead is supposed to come in turn one, but we didn't catch that and treated it like a regular reserve...oops)

This was followed by the the main gun of the Baneblade targeting the Kans threatening the Ultramarines and killing the rest of the ork mob in it's gigantic blast as well:

This could have been bad if the huge blast had deviated onto the marines, but war is risky I guess...

On the left flank a Leman Russ drops a battle cannon shell in the middle of another huge mob of boyz (killing 18 boyz):

The razorback destroys the closing Deff Dred with it's lascannon.

The KFF carried by the Big Mek does continue to stop a number of missiles and lascannon shots from doing anything to the stompy horde however.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ORK TURN THREE:

The remaining Orks on the defender's right flank had been deployed to ward against any flanking ebemy reserves and now with all the enemy reserves revealed they had the hard task of rushing the Leman Russ tanks, the nob hoping to cross the distance and tear them apart with his Power klaw if he can survive the coming fire...

Stompy elements continue push up middle, Mega-dred and Stompa unloading on the defenders as they do so. The Stompa destroys the razor back with a supa-rokkit and a few marines die to the Gaze of Mork and the Kill Kannon of the Mega-dred, but cover and typical orky accuracy prevent any telling Imperial losses.

The Shoota boyz and the trailin kans turn hard right to deal with the flanking Ultramarines:

One of the combat squads loses four memebrs to massed shoota fire.

Tank Hunter Killa Kan Spearhead unloads on the land raider immobilizing it and blowing off a lascannon sponson:

Bird's eye view of the battle at the end of turn three:

++ The Big Mek howled with orkish glee as his boyz gunned down one of the 'umie squads that had disembarked on their flank. The battle was just starting to get good, and he knew that if his stompy invenshuns could reach the Imperial lines they could break the defenders and turn the tide. "Keep fighting boyz, dis' is gonna be our city soon, after we smash these gitz!!!" yelled the Big Mek over the din of the shoota fire erupting around him...

I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this. (

The Orks caused little casualties this turn, and I am about to feel the sting of another turn of Imperial firepower...

Griffin however is getting a huge kick out of the destructiveness of his IG tanks. Good times...

Yeah I think it is cool as well. Good times.

Update on the campaign:

Astute readers may have noticed that the most recent battle report is incomplete. Just wanted to update that due to some unforseen issues with basement water damage we had to scrap the game mid-game as I had to move the tables and items in our game room around to facilitate cleanup...

that is the potential danger of spreading a game out so long I guess, but we still had fun with what we played, and if you look at the state of the board in the last pics posted I think the tide was turning against my Orks, so we are going to chalk this up as a win for the Imperium and assume from a campaign fluff standpoint that the remaining orks retreated...

Once we get our game room put back together the campaign will resume.

We have tried to play a variety of game formats thus far: the first game was kill team, then a couple of standard 40K games, and most recently Spearhead. This Leaves us with a few other formats to explore: Apocalypse, Planet Strike, and Cities of Death.

We are going to save Apocalypse for later down the road, which leaves us with PlanetStrike and COD for our next game.

After discussing it with my sons we thought we would leave it to the Dakka readership of this blog to pick which of the two formats we will play next.

Hopefully if anyone is reading this we will get a few responses and whichever format gets the most by Saturday at Midnight will be what we will play...

CoD!

I have to say City of Death is my favorite supplement book of all time (except for when cityfight was release for the 13th black crusade campaign).

Also with City of Death you can have it so that the Imperium are making a push into Ork held territory or a surprise ork warband attacking an imperial habs.
