Actually, if you look at the fluff the closest thing to a major battle the Ultramarines have been in is an utterly minor part of the Second War for Armaggedon, and only because they were running from the Tyranids during the Tyranic War.

That's a lie, the Tau are pretty much the only good guys.
'Join our empire or we'll kill you and take your land. Oh and if you do join we'll make you infertile so you can't polute our gene-pool and so we can keep your population in check.' Is only marginally better than 'We'll kill you if you aren't human.' I mean, you get to live in the Tau empire, but you're still basically a slave.

Thats DoW canon, not GW canon. Dont forget that the game was narrated by an Imperial narrator too. His version of events may not be the truth.
They dont make the humans infertile, they seperate the men and women so breeding is fairly controlled. At least theyre alive and well, far more than could be said of Tau stuck in the Imperium.
Also, they arent slaves anymore than they would have been in the Imperium.

Right, but at least the Imperial slavemasters don't bother hiding the fact that they are slavemasters, so you know where you stand. Also, Imperial slavemasters don't have a ****** for a nose.

Well, from all the fluff and stuff I have read of Tau since before they received a codex, the Tau are another brand of oppressor. True, some systems/planets/colonies fall more freely, but that is just as true about the Imperium (granted, more often there is a big gun involved, but Tau are just as likely to do that as well).

Truth, actually, is that the Imperium DOES allow MANY Xenos to live and exist within the Imperium. However they are the non-violent type, allied in some manner, or enslaved. That's pretty much how the Tau handle things too.

I am not going to say Tau are the same type of oppressor or worse than the Imperium, but they certainly are not the "good guys." Generally, the Tau main mission is to rid the galaxy of non-Tau as efficiently as possible, but first, subduing the galaxy as efficiently as possible with the fewest Tau casualties. Which is, incidently, the same objective of the Imperium, Necrons, Eldar (if they could), Orks (unless you're fightier than Orks), Tyranids (while munching), and Chaos (while munching, torturing, fighting, etc...). Granted, I would much rather be conquered by Tau than most of the others (if I weren't human), which would prefer to simply let my race dwindle out of existence out of the way of their "manifest destiny," but I would much rather be an Imperial, conquering the galaxy for Humanity.

In short, if it were more viable for Tau to purge the galaxy of all the other races than to exploit them for Tau's own ends, Tau would purge in a second. They know no more loyalty and peace than any others.

ON SUBJECT: Ultra Marines are just easy to hate. They're blue, they're everywhere, and nobody anyone cares about really defends them. Fluffwise they are boring, play wise they are vanilla at best, so they are completely 2D compared to all the other chapters.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

I think its interesting how these Ultramarines/Space marine trolling threads are given silent approval by the mods, yet if I posted stuff like the quote above in say the tournament discussion forum to describe tournament play or competitive gamers it would get locked in a heartbeat.

The difference is, Terminus is expressing his opinion about a fictional group/culture, rather than about the actions of a real person. The difference is actually very big.

Some people have pretty clearly stated disparaging things about the Ultramarines players, and the implication is pretty obvious regardless.

Lets not pretend or split hairs...

No, you're right, some people have been a little too specific about the types of people who play Ultra Marines, but without reading EVERY post here, I haven't seen too many bad things being said other than "a lot of annoying 12 year olds play them." And that is a pretty generic complaint as far as 40k goes. There has also been a lot of well thought out reasoning, and many humorous ones as well.

There fluff is mary sueish. But, most marines are these days. (In fluff anyways.)

They are also some more arrogant players as well, who say they are the best chapter. (Which was unfortunately mentioned by GW as well.)

How about this?

Matt Ward, Ultramarines player, codex writer wrote:"Chapters [not descended from Guilliman's geneseed] are disciples who owe their genetic inheritance to another Primarch, but follow the Codex Astartes as keenly as their divergent heritage allows. While primarily composed of successor Chapters, this group also includes several Chapters of the First Founding - notably the Imperial Fists, White Scars and the Raven Guard. These chapters can never be Ultramarines, for their gene-seed is not that of Roboute Guilliman. Nevertheless, they will ever aspire to the standards and teachings of the great Primarch.

[Chapters who do not emulate the Ultramarines] are aberrants, Chapters who, through quirk of gene-seed, mutation or stubbornness, eschew the Codex Astartes in favor of other structural and combat doctrines. Some, such as the Blood Angels and their successors, strive to be worthy of Guilliman's legacy, but their recalcitrant gene-seed drives them ever further from it. Others, such as the Space Wolves and the Black Templars, remain stubbornly independent, looking to their own founder's ways of war and caring little of how they fare in the eyes of others. These aberrant Chapters were always few in number and their presence diminishes with each passing decade, for their gene-seed is no longer the source of fresh Chapters."

They are tools.

(I have an adversary complex, or something within my personality doesn't allow me to play the hero. Given that they are the poster boys - and tools - of the game, I have to hate them.)

Never-mind the fact I play Spacewolves and somehow found myself with a mortal chaos army once LATD army was disbanded.
