Dreadnought is finally finished and based:

Here's a shot of my BA army so far in my display cabinet. Shows everything that's been painted. I'm estimating I'm about 15% done.

Going to be taking a break from the BA painting for now. Feel a bit burned out. I will be entering a local painting contest later in the month with a Marneus Calgar and Honor Guard squad. I'll post my progress here for that eventually.

Really loving what you have been doing, would it be possible to get a step by step on your airbrush and weathering techniques? Know it would be a lot of work, but I'm sure our fellow nerds would be grateful!

Sure. I'll see if I can get more pics and post a step by step when I do my next vehicle.

BTW, love the army shot. Can you do a tutorial for weathering?

Yup I'll try and post something up next time I do a vehicle. It's pretty easy actually since I usually just do hand painted chips with black on random edges which are filled in with Boltgun Metal. I then do a light drybrush of the edges with Boltgun metal to give it more definition. For the dirt, I do a stipple using the foundation brown along the bottom areas or anywhere dirt would accumulate. I also have pigments but haven't used them since these models might see some gaming at a later time.

Wow, that's some really great stuff. I looked at his other videos and I hate you for showing that to me... I want to start a DA army now.

Got some work done this weekend on the heavy weapons which I've had sitting around for at least 2 weeks now. Went for OSL on the plasma and LC guys:

closeup shot of the 4

Finally, I got about $600 worth of stuff coming in the mail in the next few weeks, I'm buying models faster than I can paint them!

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Santobell wrote:I love the glow effect of the energy weapons top notch work, they look luminous did you use a special paint or just damn good at it?

Actually it's just normal GW paint. I basecoated the main area with white, followed by a thraka green/asmure blue wash. Then I airbrush the area including any other surface that would be hit by the glow using goblin green and ice blue.

Start painting then! Saw your BA work in your gallery and they look great.

Mafty wrote:what do you use for weathering? paint...powders....specific brands? hand painted or airbrushed?

I use the airbrush for the darker areas of red, I had paint the wear which includes a base of black with center filled in with bolt gun metal. I then stipple on the dirt using Calthan Brown. I have pigments but don't use them in this army in case I play with the models in the future.

Thanks. I would recommend an airbrush to anyone doing vehicles or large amount of models. The amount of time saved and quality a good airbrush can produce is definitely worth it. I spent around $300 for my airbrush/compressor/accessories and am thinking about upgrading/buying a new airbrush soon.

Alright so today an order showed up from MWG which I placed during their big birthday sale. Here's a picture of the loot(left) next to my previous models on the right. All the boxes contain complete sprues. I've just opened all the boxes to checked the models for miscasts (my baal predator has some miscast issues :( )

List of new stuff:
Commander
Command Squad
Ravenwing Battleforce
Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer
Baal Predator
Predator x 2
Razorback
Venerable Dreadnought
Death Company x 2
Terminator Squad
Terminator Assault Squad
Assault Squad x 2
Dante (Not Shown)
Corbolo (Not Shown)

Can't really help it...sale was 30% off which doesn't happen often so I splurged and bought tons. I now have enough of models to paint for a couple of years. I realize many of the models I have aren't optimal for a BA army but since I don't really play, I'm looking to collect at least one of each model in the army.

Nice little chest of booty there, do you think you'll sell the army once you complete it to finance other projects or do think you maintain them as a continual project?

Very nice work.. I like the way you've painted those power armours.. Shading is very well done! But I wonder why lascannons in razorback aren't glowing? :/

This will probably be an ongoing project that I will keep as a display army. I mainly like the painting/building side of the hobby so I plan on taking my time with this and making this army include as many of the various types of units possible even if they don't perform well in the actual game.

Thanks! You caught me with the razorback lascannons though...I was hoping no one would notice. I bought the razorbacks and 3 vindicators off someone who had it prebuilt so the cowling was already in place over top of the TLLC. Couldn't get inside to paint a solid coat for the glow source so I figured I'd leave it out and hope no one would be the wiser. You've now gone and ruined all my plans heh heh. Looking back, I missed the TLLC glow source on my dreadnought as well.

That's just not good enough, throw it away start again please. I won't stand for this kind of sloppiness from you Eggroll.

But mom! I don't wanna...oh wait...

Heh, I guess I'll add that to my list of models that need adjustments. For now, I'm just going to stick em in the bottom shelf of my display case.

Been awhile since my last update though I've been making good progress on the two vindicators and two rhinos I had primed from before. At the moment, i've finished off the one vindicator and half of the other. I'll finish the third vindi before I get shots of the three together.

The red rhino is also completely done with my first "large" freehand image on the top hatch. Finished that off last night and here are the final shots:

A closeup shot of the freehand. I did the blue shading of the wings with quick bursts from the airbrush.

Finally, I've prepped and primer coated the two HQ's I bought recently. Corbolo's grail was a pain since the model comes with the cup 'filled out'. I had to use varying sized drill bits to drill out the top of the cup which I'll later fill in with some red coloured water effects. So far, all my HQ's have been based with a skull on the base somewhere and I've kept it with these two except dante has a huge pile of skulls on his which he's jumping off of. Figured it would be fitting for him to have a ton of skulls since he is the chapter master:

Quick shot I took a few days back during the painting that shows my armor painting process at different stages:

Starting from left is vindi primed with rust colour primer and shadowed and highlighted with airbrush, middle shows vindi with detailing picked out with black paint by hand and then coated with gloss varnish, right shows decals applied and then a coat of testors dull coat. After that step, I pick things out in metallics, paint the wear, pick out details such as lenses and finally airbrush shade the metallics and light sources.
