Personally I like to think that the Legion of the Damned is not solely made up from the remnants of the Firehawks chapter but also of the many fallen heroes from all the chapters. Also I'd like to think that there are a lot more of the LotD than is percieved at the moment. Perhaps the Emperor's army waiting for him to return at the final battle?
Yes, love the
LotD fluff... Especially the part about the Inquisition's failed attemps to get close. That indicates a benign higher power at work, as no "unfortunate" accidents are happening to the investigators.
What is that benign higher power? Who knows? Emperor directed spritual minions, or the Big E himself? My hope is for minions, just as the
LotD are minions of some sort as well. Would love to see the Emperor's Spirit Army on the tabletop someday...
What would it consist of? Former Space Angels as real Angels with wings and angelic power armor? Or, would they look like the
LotD? Would Librarians become Arch Angels?
And what of all those countless psychers that were bought to the Emperor in the black ships, soul bound, and sacrificed? All those souls who would have been at the mercy of deamons after death, should thier souls have survived death intact into the immaterium. What pupose do they serve? Do they become part of the Emperor, helping to watch over humanity? Is this why the Emperor seemed to have been split into multiple personalities? If absorbed, can they later emerge on thier own, imbued with a part of the Emperors spirit to be some other form of minion? Unicorns or something?
I can see Deamons and Angels (for want of a better name) clashing as they perform the countless minion duties of influencing people and events. Sometimes causing numbers to band together in common purpose, and hosts to clash in the immaterium and at times spill over into the materium.
