I'm passing on this because there is nothing in it that interests me - Space Marines vs Space Marines, yawn - but I'm glad to see the high technical quality remains. I really liked IA8 and look forward to IA10.

IA 10 is actually part 2 of this, so you'll probably want to skip that as well then.

I'm shocked that someone that doesn't like Space Marines fighting Space Marines wouldn't like and IA volume titled The Badab War Project!
Stunned even!
Since this book has already enabled us to get pre-Heresy armor variants, I'd say it is one of the best ever!

In addition to being not particularly interested in Space Marines... *ahem*.... I don't care too much about the Horus Heresy, either. I'm more into Orks & Necrons.

The Badab War isn't 'The Horus Heresy', but I will admit to being puzzled still on why all the older armor variants were, somewhat, tied to this release.

OK, I have to admit, I don't know anything about the Badab War. Isn't that right around when they virus-bombed that... place? Automatically Appended Next Post: Nevermind. I just googled it and read about it: my bad. I didn't realize Huron didn't fall to Chaos, just went renegade.

no, that's about 10,000 years earlier. he did fall to chaos eventually though.. he's a special character in the chaos space marine codex and has a daemonic familiar.

Ah thats a shame, I always liked the idea that someone could have turned renegade without it being down to Chaos for once.

I haven't had a chance to do more than leaf through it so far but I think it's likely that Chaos wasn't directly involved until after the war. The other chapters that sided with Huron certainly weren't influenced by Chaos.

No Chaos involvement in book 1 and from what was said at GD UK none in part 2 either, there's quite a bit of depth to what happens and why, and without spoilering it the Tyrant has some 'good' reasons for rebelling, and the Chapters that go with him also have motivations of their own (I thought it was pretty damn cool actually, and a bit more grown up a story that we are usually served) . -In fact one of the problems the 'secessionists' have is the Maelstrom itself at their backs, and the dark forces there are certainly not on Huron's side during the war.

there definitely were chaos worshippers in the astral claws during the actual war if you take the novels are part of the canon. in one of the two space marine short story compilation novels (either space marine heroes or legends... can't remember which), there's a story about the chapter master of one of the renegade chapters that details his and his chapter's "trial" by the imperium after surrendering during the war. there is a description of some of his marines meeting with some of huron's after a few years separation and he describes them as clearly NOT the same type of marines that they started the war with. from the description, they were already fallen. IIRC, that realization is one of the main reasons his chapter surrendered. the war they thought they were fighting had changed into something else.

Great thanks for that Khorazin, I might buy the book on that basis!
Like you say, a bit more grown up and makes a change from 'A wizard did it!' to why anyone thinks the Imperium is a bad idea.

Trial of the Mantis Warriors by C.S. Goto.
It was suprisingly quite decent(shocking I know). Maybe short stories should be Goto's sole purpose.
It was one of my favorites in its respective anthology, mainly because it wasn't a typical Space Marine killing hordes of the Imperiums enemies. There are battles in it, yes, but the main focus is the chapter masters introspection of what went wrong. His punishment is appropriately severe for someone whose sole purpose in life is to die fighting. I hope that dude and the characters/scenes mentioned get a part in the Forgeworld Badab War books. I'm still waiting on mine to check :(

I actually learned something funny about that short story not too long ago.
It wasn't actually written by C.S. Goto! Apparently, the tale goes that what happened was when he got all up in a huff after his Deathwatch books bombed and he was getting in trouble with Black Library for how he was abusing canon...and it ended with Black Library having a copy of an outline for a short story using characters of his creation. It ended with one of the newer authors(I think it was Steve Parker who was mentioned as the one doing it) to prove that he could actually write 40k fiction, considering all his experience was in writing children's novels.

And the fact that it was originally a C.S Goto piece also explains why it totally ignores any canon... like how the Mantis Warriors were an effective fighting force until the very end of the war and didn't actually surrender... and the fact that their Chapter Master was killed during the Betrayal at Grief that sees the Red Scorpions Chapter Master killed and Culln take over... I imagine that would make it hard for him to be put on trial after the war...

anyone else thinking of using the tyrant's legion rules for Iron Warriors?

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal. |

Great book, and look forward to fielding my Griffons again in the near future... possibly at the "Into the Maelstrom" Tempus Fugitive event next may...
However... as a long term fan of the Howling Griffons... being part of the task force that participated in the Dark Stars event mentioned by the author at the begining... I can't believe the monumental -up in the Griffons section !
Didn't notice it at first, just felt something was off..... then, it hit me! the numpties !! they'd got the quartering the wrong way round on the large chapter symbol, and the only two properly attired marines in their !?!?!??!
And yet... for the marines in the "night world ( FW hates the griffon scheme and avoids it like the plague) scheme..." they have it correct !! Yellow top left and bottom right, red top right, bottom left....
Jeez..
