Thanks for the answer. I still believe it is a bad rule that should be changed, but it is nice to see other opinions too.

Remember, fluff wise, 'one shot' doesn't mean the guy pulled the trigger 'once'. 'One shot', especially with rapid fire weapons like the plasma gun or the lasgun probably represents a quick burst of fire. Now it's makes a bit more sense, no? It's not that he pulled the trigger 6 times, and his gun explodes...our friendly neighborhood plasma gunner sent 6 bursts of fire down range, and one burst pushed his gun just a little too far.
