It feels more like a labor camp to me than a place of learning, like policies are in place simply to groom kids to be obedient wage slaves in the future. It is really creepy.

I get the same sort of vibe every time I'm at my kids schools...I feel as though I've stepped into some sort of hybrid Orwellian/Barney indoctrination center, where the primary "lesson" being taught is " how to be another faceless, unquestioning, boring cog in the wheel 101".
Now, believe me...I get that being an educator/teacher can be a very thankless job and that we now live in a " What do you mean my kid did something wrong/was a victim/heard or saw somethingI find offensive!!...I'm suing everyone!!" sort of world, thus resulting in many of these CYA policies ...and despite that, I've met a few teachers who are amazingly dedicated people who genuinely seem to care about the actual learning process.
...But, at the same time, I've sat across tables with"Stepford" administration/ teachers who regurgitate "doublespeak" as though they were tape recorders who's " educational mission" was/is to see that my kids become little tape recorders as well.

I'm often saddened at my wife's school. After a parent teacher conference wherein a parent when told by my wife that she doesn't argue with children the parent replied, "well, where is someone my daughter can argue with?" like that's a service that the school is supposed to offer. I'm also shocked by the lack of critical thinking and researching skills displayed by students, let alone the students on their way to high school that can barely read. It disgusts me. Teachers are part of the problem, so is the framework they work within; I wish I knew the solution.

...Yes, I also noticed parents who expect teachers to be "baby sitters / emotional punching bags" for their kids, going to PTA functions is always an...interesting experiance.
I also agree that in many ways the educational system isn't up to snuff, I discovered that while my kids could recite dates and events,etc...they had absolutely zero understanding of impact of events and found this was true of most of their class mates as well.
Also noticed quite a few kids , as you noted, who continue to be promoted from grade to grade even though they couldn't find their own ass with both hands and a map.
Honestly...I don't know what the solution is either, but...as a parent I do what I can to fill in the gaps that the educational system misses as best I can.

... Yeah, I remember back in high school when there were fights between students , staff broke it up, detentions/suspensions were given out...and everyone got on with life.
Now...if two kids scrap ...the police have to be involved.

that really depends on where you are...the cops were scared to go near my inner city middle school, it was simply the worst school I've ever been to...

To give you a perspective, I was one out of two white guys in my homeroom...no racist intention but that's how it was...those kids didn't mess around, screw with someone and you'd be on the business end of a boot circle or a pencil shiv...

And the staff would only get involved after the fact...

Damn it. Already stated I'm not from Texas....

Under the future enlightened Frazzled administration, everyone will be from Texas. Those regions will encompass
old Texas (Mexico)
Texas (Texas)
Permian Basin ala hell of Texas (West Texas and New Mexico)
West Texas (all western states outside of California/Oregon/Washington)
Left Texas (California, Oregon, Washington)
Cold Texas (northern Midwest)
South Texas (Dixie states)
Yankee Texas (New England)
Maple Texas (Canada)

Canada and Mexico need not be alarmed. Their assimilation will be seamless using the awesome power of Tex Mex and bacon.

I went to one of the " worst" high schools in New Orleans ( one of the "worst" middle schools as well) and fights were pretty much an everyday thing...during that time I saw police at school a total of perhaps four or five times, and in every single case they were there for " drug related offenses".

Yep...describes Ferry Pass to a tee...Some of the little buggers were smart about it too...

You don't know the amount of times I've seen a student writhing on the football field at PE and the offending party telling the coach it was "an accident."

You mean Creature from the Black Lagoon Texas? Well Louisiana is technically a foreign country now, but I am sure we can come to an agreement.

Maybe we'll change the name to Jumbalaya Texas. Will that work?

Heck, may as well have Texas annex Louisiana. A lot of the folks who took refuge there after Katrina haven't left (and it wasn't the good ones that seem to have stayed according to my Houston Cop brother).

Yes many more homeless since then. Seperate to that, Houston has a bunch of Katrina refugees that never went back, which is fine. When mom was in the hospital her liason was from Metarie and they babbled away for quite a while. No one else could understand them.

Actually these "panic policies" were pretty much SOP long before the Penn State situations....but I'm sure those events could serve to exacerbate things.

Still trying to see what the actual crime could be. OK I take that back, false reporting is a crime. I guess the police could arrest the person from the school dragging them out there.

How? Assault/battery cases generally require "hostile or offensive" as a predicate.

Hmm, was under the impresion that a case could be made for battery simply based on " unwanted" contact from another individule....not saying that the little boy didn't want the " contact" he received ...but I did get the idea that it was a bit of an initial " surprise" to him perhaps.

Unwanted could be a standard - depends on what the theoretical charge and jurisidiction is. Buta again its the standard of the boy, not the school.
That really is just crazy.

I actually looked into being a teacher in the states. And hell.
Crap all pay, obnoxious children and parents, and a waaaaay higher chance of getting sued over something trivial.
How in the name of god do you attract people to the profession!?

That's a really good question, as I said, I've encountered teachers who just really seem passionate about making a difference...some sort of positive impact on the world around them, perhaps that's part of what draws educators into the American school system.

Yeah, like I said...I suppose if someone really wanted to push a case...then perhaps there would be some validity, but as Frazz pointed out that would probably be the boys call ( or god forbid his parents) and not the schools.

I was thinking about this thread last night and had to laugh at the realization that if these same policies had been in affect in the 70's I myself could have been whisked away by the " kissing cops".

Since the boy is a minor, it's the parents' call. And since the school pushed it to the Sheriff's department from the start it might be that there's some kind of history there or some other potential shenanigans going on.

That's not strictly true in this case. It's sort of confusing.

There are two layers. The first layer is if a crime was committed, the second is if charges were pressed.

In the FIRST layer, we have to determine if "unwanted" touching happened. THAT part is still defined by the kid themselves.

In the SECOND layer, we decide if the victim will press charges. THAT is decided by the parents.

So in this case, if the touching wasn't "unwanted" BY THE KID, then it never gets up to the second layer where the parents decide. The officer still needs PC before the parents even get options.

TL : DR, the parents decide if charges will be pressed, but they can't decide if the touching was "wanted" or not because the kid is old enough to communicate that.

On a tangentially related note (barely), I live in a semi-rural area. There have been a few occasions where it's required for me to call the police for some reason or another, all non-emergencies (I had a smoker stolen off my porch, I once had a credit card stolen and needed to file a police report for the bank, etc). Since I have no local PD, I always call the county cops directly, and they tell me I need to call 911. Since I lived in NYC for the majority of my life I always found this to be disquieting and have been hesitant to so (strictly for life and limb emergencies back home). But indeed, that's how they do it around here.

Sorry for dragging this post back up, but I wanted to comment on it.

I live in an urban area (Chicago), and I was moving. So, I had registered with the city to make the street right in front of my building "No Parking - Tow Zone" on the morning of my move, as my street was a single lane with parking on both sides, so I needed a big spot for the moving truck to park so that it wouldn't block the entire street for the day.

Well, the morning of the move, there was a car still parked right in the middle of the spot for the truck (it hadn't moved in weeks and looked like it may be abandoned). I called the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation, explained that I had it as a tow zone for the day, and asked them to come tow the car away. They told me they don't handle that, and that I should call 911.

I asked "911? Shouldn't I call 311? (The non-emergency number in Chicago)" They said "Nope, call 911."

So, I called 911 and explained the non-emergency. The operator was totally understanding and not at all surprised that someone would call for something like this and said they'll send someone right out.

Of course, an hour later when the moving truck showed up, the car was still there. It was still there 3 hours after that when I and the truck left after having blocked the entire street for the entire morning. And, it was still there when I went back the next day to pick up the last odds and ends.

So, a car parked illegally is an emergency, just not enough of a one to respond to.

To add another layer entirely, charges can be pressed without the victim wanting them to be filed if the crime is heinous enough.

I doubt that was the case here, but it would be quite amusing if it were.
