I'll be clear on this...
Quitting 40k?? Not likely... not at all..
Quitting GW? Absolutely! In point of fact, I've already quit GW years ago, I've been doing most of my spending buying stuff second-hand or from a third party (miniwargaming, discount stores, chapterhouse...) to make sure that GW gets as little penny as it can. With current prices..... yeesh, I think I'll either find another system, make my own, or a different hobby.

The largest issue is people dissatistfied with GW go to other games (in this example, warmachine) and those players that change games think their games is the best, disregarding their games problems.
So you have warmachine players that constantly say how great their game is and how crap 40k is. This causes a rift between the 40k and war crowds. This rift will only grow more due to the player base that war managed to collect from their departure from 40k.

I've looked into playing a different tabletop but have found that the prices aren't so much lower that I would abandon my huge investment in 40k for them...I've about 6k points worth of Space Marines alone and the beginnings of three other armies (ork, Tyranid and Necron) so for me to switch games at this point it would take a pretty huge gab in price between the two games, and that gap simply doesn't exist.

A lot of the WM/H players in my area are ex-GW players - and see themselves as both converts TO the one-true-faith AND as Crusaders whose moral duty it is to push the faith.
None so devout as a convert and all that (or as holier-than-thou).
You don't have to stop worshipping one plastic idol to follow another. It is quite possible to have a happy pantheon of gaming where none are more equal than others.
When I started to play infinity, there were NO players in my area -I HAD to travel to find them. Through them, I found others, and the idea spread. I now have 4 players in my local group, and a further 15 or so in another group. I introduced it to one of them - and HE took up the torch (he runs a gaming business) but he didn't preach exclusivity, he still plays Blood Bowl and FoW in addition to SAGA and other games.
One of my friends was the ONLY player in his group (23 players), now, 8 months later, ALL of them play Infinity in addition to 40k. This was without coercion - a play it if you like it attitude.

GW has priced me out...For now. I've just got so much on my plate outside of the hobby, moving to a new city, finding a job and going back to school. I've been more interested in Privateer Press. But someday I'll get around to finishing my LOTR army. On top of that. I'd rather get -other- things then models.
I -was- going to go up to 2500 with my Beastmen, looks like i'll spend my birthday money on pub food and ale this year.

It's a loyalty thing, the examples you posted, they all are rivals, take the FPSs for example. COD has been the lead seller in the fps realm and BF3is the runner up, you can't be loyal to both because then you would be traitor to the other. The two are opposing armies, and you can't fight for both sides.

I think that's a really terrible attitude to have concerning miniatures and wargames.. (or for anything in life for that matter)
I think most people probably would like to try more than one game, and collect + paint them. The true 'zealot' - who for whatever reason is completely wrapped up in one game at the expense of all others (or rather, just claims that all others are terrible for no quantifiable reason than 'just') is thankfully rare.
But, time and money considerations come into play for most people so that they can only focus on one game. If that one game happens to be a GW one even more so, as the core games generally involve more minis (so less time to paint/play with other stuff) and are relatively more expensive for a playable force.

World of Warcraft or EVE Online.

And, Warhammer or Warmachine/Flames of War/Whatever.
It's pretty damn stupid, isn't it? You are allowed to play more than one game at a time.
Thats a good example of fan mentality at work.
Also a major driving force in their loyalty and blind faith to such companies.

I've already started switching over to WarmaHordes, as I'm starting back to college this fall, and my gaming budget is going to be quite a bit smaller than it is now. I've been playing for a month now, and I've managed to get four 25-point armies for a fraction of what I was spending on 40k'WFB.
I was considering switching when I first heard about the price increases, then after discussing it with my friends at my FLGS, we all decided that Warmahordes was the best option. Honestly, I like the rules and structure of the game a lot more than 40k, and my friends agree. While we still play 40k, WarmaHordes has pretty much taken over the FLGS. I don't see myself buying GW much (if at all) in the future.
Sorry if this post doesn't make much sense, I've been awake for almost 30 hours and it's just now starting to hit me.

The key difference between GW games and nearly all historical and other games is that to play GW you just need to go to a GW shop.
If you want to play historical games, or most non-GW games, you need to go to a club.
Since clubs are not on the high street with illuminated signs, they are not so obvious, however they do widely exist. There are three in the town where I live, which is only 250,000 population, as well as a GW shop and an independent game shop that does boardgame nights.
When you buy GW stuff, you also buy the right to go into a GW shop and have a reasonable expectation of a GW game, as long as it is one of the three major systems. Unless you are a veteran in which case they will encourage you to come back on Thursday night.
If you feel priced out by GW, then I would strongly encourage you to seek out a club and explore some other genres.
