Additionally, Dreadball had very, very few exclusive figures (I think 3 ultimately? Robot guy, Elf Guy and Bane?).
As far as I can tell, only Nightshade an Wyn Greth'Ski were KS-exclusives. The Bane guy (Blaine/Convict) is just a really early preview for Season 4 - Dreadball Xtreme! I haven't seen anything via Mantic to indicate he was KS-only.
On the Googledoc they used as a survey, Blaine is labeled as "Blaine (Limited Edition DreadBall Xtreme MVP) - $8". I also forgot the Penny Arcade guy ("Jonathan 'Gabe' Gabriel (Limited Edition Officially Licensed Penny Arcade MVP) - $10 ").
I'm trying to find something link-able (if you want to check, it's the 3rd page of the Googledoc), but I don't remember seeing anything about it either before then, to be honest.

Huh - I'd completed my survey a while back, and must've missed that about Blaine, as it wasn't in the Updates on the KS about him. Having said that, I'd forgotten about Gabe.- probably due to the absolutely insipid publicity PA did...

If you got a crap ton of models from a kickstarter, and go and play in a store with them, they're seeing no money from you for the use of their tables. Similarly, if you budget buy a whole army from an online store and play on their tables, it's the same situation. This is exactly why many hobby shops carry snack food. The longer you are in the store, the more likely you are to buy some junk food. Also, hobby shops typically get models at a reduced price and sell them at "website" pricing levels letting both of them make a profit without any "real" competition. I know of a few local hobby shops that charge $1-$2 every day you play on their tables as well. I heard a few shops even have a membership system for it. $<x> for a year of play or $<w> for every day you come and play. While I don't disagree (my FLGS has a fully staffed kitchen, and offers burgers, pies, wraps, and other decent food alongside candy bars and chips), snack food does not replace product sales. It's there to supplement it (and is a good idea - if you offer food, they won't leave to buy it elsewhere, and may buy a fig on impulse while buying food). If you're not buying actual wargaming products, you're cutting out the most significant chunk of their money. Also, if stores are starting to charge for use of their tables, that's not a good sign either. The tables are advertisement. Potential customers walk in, see people playing, and decide to look into it. This is more of an issue with the store and not kickstarter though. Buying a Mars bar while playing a game of Sedition Wars in the store won't make up for buying it on kick starter.

I just got back from my favorite game store and they stocked Zombicide. Not only did they stock it, the owner personally got in on the Kickstarter, and I bought the last copy of the first batch. He was unboxing the next set as I was leaving and told me they are supposed to be selling the add ons later. I also got the game for 25% off. So...he will sell kickstarted games and buys them himself.

The owner of an FLGS I've started to frequent actively asked for ZC demo's and has already indicated an interest in seeing DB and SW demo's played.
...seems I'll be spending some time there, come December

Our LGS generally doesn't do Kickstarter products until after the stuff has actually come out - so that they can judge if there is any continued demand for the products. many kickstarters are for things that probably won't sell long-term but are a good enough idea to get funded as a one off. They stock Sedition Wars but have said they haven;t sold a single figure for 4 months due t the Kickstarter. But once the game comes out they'll re-stock to see if there is any continued interest.
Makes more sense this way to me. I can see however that KS stuff will kill sales for a retailer while the customer has to wait for their game/stuff to come though they won't by other bits in the meantime.

hotsauceman1 wrote:I noticed this quite a bit in my neck of the woods. Game stores have refused to carry products that where funded by kickstarter.
I heard it is because they do not sale. But also it is an insult to the game stores who receive it. Because the company that made it bypassed them to sell the product, then made the game store sell it hoping the store gets any stragglers?
Anyone else notice this trend? What do you think about kickstarter and such?
I'm going to need to hear more specific examples before I accept the premise of this discussion. I can't deny that it might be happening, but we need more information.
Are these stores big game stores that all ready have alot of niche items? Kickstarter projects are mostly small/indie/niche products that wouldn't show up at the average FLGS. It's my best guess that whatever the manager of an average smallish FLGS says about "not going to carry those kickstarter products" it's likely that they wouldn't carry them anyway.
The real proof would be if any dealers had discontinued products from companies that had a kickstarter. I don't know of any dealers that were carrying mantic or reaper bones who are ceasing caring them post-kickstarters.

Two of the big Kickstarter projects this year, DreamForge and Sedition Wars haven't even hit the shelves yet. I'd want to see if either of these have problems before I believe a retailer would refuse to stock product based solely on how it was funded.
Most likely retailers will refuse to stock product they believe they can't move quickly.

I also found a couple other stores, like The Guard Tower in Columbus, Ohio, that sell Mantic. It does happen. Maybe just not as frequent. Those places all sell Reaper as well, but I haven't seen Sedition Wars yet.
Yea, but The Guard Tower sells just about everything.

Zombicide is fairly big, I think. Do your game stores have it on the shelf? Mine does. And it has Kings of War. And Cards Against Humanity. And I think they said they were getting sedition wars too, and they've always carried Reaper (truthfully though, I dot know anyone who doesn't). I know I posted that already, but I'm bored. Nothing Kickstarter has been removed from shelves, and the warhammer crew buys up a lot of the mantic stuff, zombicide flew off the shelf, and CAH can't stay in stock. They have no problem selling Kickstarter stuff. The owner personally buys stuff for his own collection on KS too.
