Update time once again
I've been working on the Lootas and Burna Boyz over the weekend, can really notice how much faster painting five models is over 12! !

Death Skullz Lootas (almost done)

Goffs Burna Boyz (so far only really half done the metals and basecoated the grey areas)

That's some nice blue you've got on the Lootas HairySticks - any chance you'd be willing to share it's secrets?

sure thing;

Base coat 50-50mix of The Fang and Celador Sky, then that mixed colour mixed 50-50 with Liquiitex ultra matte medium.And thinned considerably. (2 coats)

Drybrush with Lothern Blue,

Drybrush with Blue Horror (*this is one of the Edge paints, I belive the drybrush paints are the same colours)

Wash with Drakenhoff Night shade

Drybrush again with Blue Horror

Glaze with Guillman Blue. to being the saturation back up.

Hope that helps, Its a pretty simpler technique, a lot of my painting works around dark basecoats, light drybrushing and a wash to tie it together. Not quite as good as a nice wet blend or even a steady layering, but pretty damned fast compared, which counts for everything with horde armies! Lots of drybrushing means you ought to get a decent drybrush! GW ones are not all that good... I do use the small one occasionally, But the bristles are too stiff, and not soft enough. Theyre hard to find becsuse the law got changed to protect them,, but I recommend Mongoose Hair brushes for drybrrushing. They have much better snap back than the citadel hog blend, much soft, better paint holding capacity, and I find them so much easier to do a nice soft drybrushing transition.

Cheers mate. This will work wonders for the Librarian I've got coming soon (Turmiel from the DV box - I'm gonna Salamanders him up). Speaking of drybrushing - I'll probably substitute in edge highlighting rather than drybrushing, but I'll be keeping the colours the same. I have to say, all my brushes are Citadel (I got gifted the full set back when I was getting into 40K) and I have to say I've never had a technical problem with them. Some of them are getting knackered now, but that's more to do with the my inexperience of brush care when I was getting into painting. Other than that I find them to be pretty decent. That said, I may see about getting a new set in the future (I may even go upper class and get some Kolinsky ones )

hehe
When i got back into the hobby a couple years ago, I grabbed a handful of brushes from GW, which lasted me all of about a week before the tips were useless.
Then i went to Rosemary & Co, really like these, they do lovely brushes and lovely drybrushes.
And then while ordering some ink's I also ordered a set of 4 W&N series 7's for £30, sizes 0 through 3. These are beautiful, worth every penny!
The tips on my rosemary and co are just starting to go about 12-18 months later, after some heavy usage.
The series 7 look good to go for some time to come.

Series 7 have a tad more spring to the bristles than the rosemary and co's. But both are really nice to use, and make citadels ones pale in comparison.

The only citadel brushes I use anymore are the drybrushes, which isnt often as I tend to grab the Rosemary and Co 'Masters Choice' mongoose hair brushes Ive got. Its so much nicer to work with and is outlasting the citadel hog blend too They did put a message out saying that mongoose hair had become protected and they were seeking alternatives though; I cant comment on what they found or how good it is.

heres a quick snap of my usual working brushes, with the citadel standard included for show; notice how the points on all of them (except the citadel) are awesome!... every single one of these brushes has been used more than the citadel one ever was, and yet the tips maintained on them are finer than what citadel offer with their fine detail brush. (Notice the 'Eavy metal brush' is actually pretty good, as nice as any of these others, it came with the edge paints set though, the R&C ones are equally good for so much better pricing!

When i set up my nephew with some paints, brushes and some models to keep him busy, I got him a set of Rosemary and Co's 2/0, 0, 1 and 2, with 2 sizes of the drybrush, rather than letting him waste money on citadels that will be no good in a week (even in hands that care for them)
If you dont already use it, get brush cleaner/preserver, it keeps your points this nice

Ah, may be worth investing in some brush cleaner. I think part of the problem is that I often end up painting at this time of day - around 10-11:00 PM. So when I've finished, although I regularly swirl my brushes about to get the thick paint out, I often forget or don't think to go to the sink and give them a proper clean with soap and warm water. Hence, they are losing their points gradually. Mind you, I've only lost the point of my Standard, Wash and one of my Fine Detail brushes - the rest are faring quite well and I've had them for nigh on 2 years now (Really since I joined Dakka). I'll probably go for W&N or Kolinsky when I get round to replacing them. I can see your point about Citadel brushes being naff, but for a relative beginner like me (I've only got 15 models under my belt) they do well enough.

The brush cleaner is so useful, makes so much difference to the longevity of a brush.
I use it after im done painting with any colour, wet the brush, gather some of the soap on the bristles and work it through onto a paper towel, wet again and keep working it untill its all foamy, if theres dried paint in the bristles this might take a few goes, but all the dried acrylics come off with it as the soap soaks through the hairs. - you mighjt be amazed how much colour is held by those bristles.. especially red pigments! Have you ever gone to white after red and found yourself painting baby pink?
Then when done with the brush, and putting it back into the jar, get some fresh soap onto the bristles and form a nice point. Leave this soap there untill you want to use the brush again (tomorrow? ) it will set hard., much like when you buy new brushes and is to be rinsed out just prior to use.

A good alternative to 'brush soap' which is just natrual soap, is liquid hand soap. Works almost as well.

Another good trick is to periodically condition your brushes with some hair conditioner (for your head ; the mrs or the mother might well have some )

Maybe once or twice a year, this is good practise to keep the bristles subtle.

All of this only really applies to natural hair bristles (of any kind), so citadels Sables, would benefit from it for sure.
When buying top end Kollinsky Sable (the Kollinsky is a weasel kind of animal in Siberia) Its basically a must, because the brushes deserver to be taken care of properly

Never use solvents on nartual hair brushes; just think if it would damage your own hair? if it would, then dont use it!

Exceptions might be to save a well and truely ruined brush... allthough once cleaned in something like alcohol or acetone, they probably will degrade fast as most solvents dry them out. (conditioning straight after solvent cleaning might be wise)

Il be fair to Citadel, some of their brushes are workable, its a bit pot luck. Some will fray the first go, some will be relatively well made and last a while. Conversely, if you get a W&N series 7 that cant hold a point, then you deserve a new one and were incredibly unlucky!

There are differences between Sable, and Kollinksy Sable... I've tried W&N Artists Water Colour Sable, (one range down from Series 7) trying to save some pennies, while the point was vastly superior to what citadel were offering, it didnt last very long for me, comparable to citadels.

I didn't think brush cleaner was just natural soap! I already do wash my own brushes out using natural soap (the stuff with no perfumes or additives etc.) in the same way you've just described - so I should be fine on that score. I never thought to use hair conditioner though, so I may have to invest in a little travel bottle of the stuff to keep my brushes in good nick. I think I'll have to get back into the habit of regularly cleaning out my brushes if I'm to invest in some new ones though. Also, I am aware of just how tenacious red pigment is. If you've ever seen any of the freehand I've done on my Terminators you can appreciate my incandescent level of fury upon finding my pristine white, free-handed dragon has turned the most adorable shade of my little pony pink. Needless to say, expletives were aired.

So its been a long time since I posted about my Orks :(
But I've been busy building some fresh stuff for them

First up is a Deff Dread, Its still WIP but I thought I'd post something as its been ages!

Heres all the parts laid out, primed with Halfords Grey Primer,Then base-coated with VMA Rust, and patchily sprayed with VMA Black Metal.

Following this I used these paints;

And with a combination of sponging, drybrushing, stippling, washing, splattering, all kind of haphazardly with all of those colours I got this ; (also started adding blue to make it Death Skulls)

Lots of weathering, and detailing to come, After this guy, theres 3 Killa Kans, and a Mega Dread assembled an primed awaiting paint on the shelf! I think the kans are going yellow badmoons, and the mega dread will be goffs most likely.... undecided on that atm.

All the parts of them are just held loosy by pins and can be swapped out, Ive got some magnets since I build this, I might install some

I know I was planning to get trukks next... lol well I got click happy when ordering for something else and ended up with a bunch of walkers, maybe trucks later
Still havent painted the Nobz, Warboss, Deffkoptas, and half painted the Burna Boyz so theres lot to do on the Orks Project... aswell as helping the nephew with his Chaos Alpha Legion, Repainting my Deathwing, Ravenwing and half og my greenwing Dark Angels too :/ busy busy! hehe... gota build the gaming table soon too oh lordy! hehe

Soo its been agggges since I posted an update here!

I have done a little bit on the Orks meanwhile, not as much as I mioghtve liked... but hey, new Orks churning round the rumour mill, my wallet is scared.

Heres the shelf as it is right now;

And a little closer as I struggled to get a good pic of much with my phone looking at the entire shelf;

Right side
Goff and Evil Sunz boyz and the Mega Dread

Middle
Goffs Warboss, Badmoons and Deathskullz Boyz

Left
Goffs Burnas, Badmoons Kans, Deathskullz Lootas, Badmoons Nobz

And kicking around Ive got a DeffDead, and Bommer, the DeffDread I want to strip and start again I think, and the Bommer is in assembly stages, being magnetised for all 3 variants.

Now I don't currently know what clans the mega and deff dreads belong to, but the Bommer seems a good fit for Evil Sunz being as they likes it fastest. I might try for one of those sharky faces at the nose of it Or maybe some hotrod flames?

Hey Hairy, it's been a while since I saw your Orks pop up in the P&M forum - looking good as ever! I'm still envious of your Lootas blue (Mine is rather less vivid than I'd hoped!) and I'm rather looking forward to seeing how that Mega-dread comes along. Incidentally, having just read IA8 (The Raid on Kastorel-Novem), I'm toying with the idea of getting a small band of Orks myself... well, that or more Salamanders. Or Raven Guard. Or Elysians - I haven't really made my mind up which yet!

Oh and regarding the Bommer - Flames. Definitely Flames

Evil Sunz red body work with yellow hotrod flames up the nose and the wings is how I see the flames.

Unsure how taping flames goes at this scale hehe, ive done actual size motor cycles and the likes... we'll see what I come up with

Might just cut a stencil of them. Might have to spray yellow first and put the flame in, in negative with the red though too for coverage reasons.

Mega Dread!
Still WIP .. its needs some finishing touches... just a bit stumped as to what they are going to be.

As you can probably see... this ones part of Da Goffs in my warband of all clans. I do need suggestions for how to make it pop more though, its at that almost done but missing something point, need to put my finger on it.
