I have several large SM armies, including 50000+pts of IH, 25000+pts of 'Scars and Salamanders which are virtually 100% second hand, in fact I can't remember ever buying anything new for myself (unless you count scenic bases, cos I've bought a lot of those), only stuff I remember buying are Christmas or birthday presents for my son's Ravenguard.
I like the worst condition gak on ebay, cos its cheap as chips and you can cut it up without worrying about the cost. Get it, Throw it into DOT5, rinse with pineol and water, dry, reassemble and paint. Who can tell?
Any poor work in my armies are all my own work.

I dont have a OCD about 2nd hand models but some just make me cringe.

I received these models in toilet paper rolls stuff with foam? (like the kind used on mattresses). The inside of the box was full of shredded paper and the the foam had turned green from the paint. Most interesting ebay package i have ever seen. The models themselves got exterminatus'ed in LA's Totally awesome to be cleaned.

Funny, this thread is probably giving GW mixed emotions:
Those who only want to buy new (yay!).
Those who cannot remember ever buying anything but used (boo!)

Just emphasizes we are all different.. oh so much different.
Just hope no-one uses radioactive isotopes in their paint as a joke.

I was wondering if anyone else has a "problem" with 2nd hand models in that they arent very comfortable buying them since they are used and could have been literally anywhere with the previous owner (chewed on my the pet dog or sucked on my the kid, dropped onto the grimey floor or covered in godknows what etc).

I know, it sounds really bizarre as a sort of OCD but just wanted to see am I completely alone in this.

Yes I acknowledge its silly and yes I could save a frigging fortune but I only buy 2nd hand boxed kits.

Am I nuts?

Yeah, you're nuts and probably OCD.

Do you make sure they are sealed in the shrink wrap? Because all someone would have to do is open the box and handle the sprues after recently holding money and those sprues are as toxic as the inside of a toilet.

As for me, I almost only buy used miniatures, out of their packaging. Painted, unpainted, whatever. As for figs, though, a good portion of what I buy spends a few weeks in a tub of Purple Power, so it's probably even cleaner from a disease perspecitve than a NIB kit.

I have no problem with used stuff, especially clothes(though I draw the line at undergarments). Originally we bought used as a kid because it's what we could afford. Now it's because I like to dress well and can't justify the cost of the clothes I want new. My personal feeling is that a disdain/fear/total-rejection of used products is a position born of privilege. Most of the world says "yeah, that's a nice pair of slacks for a good price." It's mostly those who can afford new who say "Oh no, I'd never wear anything USED!"

Still, -and I mean this mostly sincerely- more power to the new-only crowd on whose backs our economy must surely rest. Keep on buying, just be sure to drop it off at Goodwill or post it to Bartertown when your done. My wallet thanks you.

Ah, but a TRUE hobbyist is like a black hole: miniatures join the collection but never go out...

Heck, I grind my sprues in a meat grinder for easy rubble.

No model ever really goes away, it is just stripped down for parts.

Come to think of it, I think if anything does leave my collection it is a trade (as parts) for parts.

So there, used tiny bits could not be a as repulsive as a whole used miniature right?? right??

I do ok with 2nd hand because somethings just can't be had new anymore. My khorne chaos marine army has at its core the original army I started with in rogue trader. Not long after I had also started nurgle, tzeentch and slaanesh armies. Each contained a lot of WFB chaos champion models coverted for 40k usage. I eventually sold off all but the khorne armies and then years later decided I wanted them back again so had to do a lot of it through ebay because most of the models just weren't made any more. Found just about every slaaneshi and nurgle chaos champion model again, along with plenty of Realms of Chaos chaos renegade marines of all sorts as well. Couldn't have built those armies again without going completely over to the secondary market.

I generally don't panic about it as I expect most other gamers, like myself, do not rub their miniatures in various bodily orifices just for fun. Sure there are freaks out there, but that is what simple green is for.

This is very true.

I've got alot of really neat models in my collection -that add alot of flavor to my armies and warbands- that are no longer commercially available.

Hexatrix (6 legged horses) riders, Vintage Ral Partha D&D Crodlu and Giant, Squats, etc, etc.

OP probably has a touch of OCD. Often it can't be helped. I have a touch of it as well (OCD collecting). Anyway, I'm happy to take old models. If they're gak, they get a bath. If they're merely undercoated, I paint over. Occasionally/rarely, I'll overpaint and turn an old job into something cool.

Since finecast can go die in a car fire, second hand is the only way to keep buying metals - and absolutely the only way to get hold of old figures from the 1980s etc.

Before I sell any models on Ebay I always let them ride around in my briefs for a day or so.

Nothing having them sit in simple green for a couple of weeks wont fix.

I hate second hand models mainly just due to every one I get seems to have been assembled by blind monkeys with a superglue fetish.

I find taking second hand models apart and rebuilding them to be one of the best parts of the hobby, taking a badly built gakky painted model and turning it into YOUR badly built gakky painted masterpiece is very satisfying

What? I'm not the only OCD player? LOL

I'll buy kits all the time on ebay to save some pennies, but I have a really hard time with anything else.
