Waterfall? Excellent.

15mm terrain? I welcome it whole-heartedly. I think the only terrain that may trouble us is 2:1 scale terrain. The smallest I've worked in is 1:200 scale.

You're right Vik, neither heads nor tails. But I trust you'll bedazzle us... again.

Too bad I already finished these..( not really comp. worthy ) Some old unfinished pics. Just some terrain I did for my local Flgs ( who's terrain kinda sucks )
Lots of construction this summer here in Wisconson. The new overpasses gave me the idea to make these. Early WIP pics

Just to show you the height.

Some ground pieces.. they are not weathered in this pic ( but are now)

gave me me some good learnings for when I do something for my own table.

Alright count me in, my next 'giftorama' isn't due for 3 months so I should have enough time to work on this too.

We said paths are ok, right? So in that case:

Path to Grimskull

The undead hordes of Grimskull is the working title for my side-army undead project. The diorama will have a classic (maybe even stereotypical) adventuring party proceeding down a path that is fraught with grave peril! (yeah, I'm going to pun hell, I've made my peace with it).

Along the cobblestone path undead will be laying in wait for the adventurers. The piece will feature a small graveyard and keeper's cabin, behind which a necromancer will be casting a spell to raise the dead from the cemetery, I hope to include a fancy glowy spell effect. There will be a cave in which I will put some kind of monster... possibly an Ogrhoul, an ogre who has sworn to serve the darkness and favors the flesh of man above all other fare, potentially with a pair of proper ghouls on leashes.

I kind of want to keep everything to a 12x12" square, though if this is unreasonable I can make it larger.

As per the guidelines for the competition, I plan to stretch myself in the following ways:

I want to convert the adventurers from their basic rank and file poses/gear to look more like adventurers, more gear, packs pouches, recognizable weapons, maybe enchanted ones. The elf may be up the tree keeping watch, and so on. I'll need to use greenstuff and I'm very rusty with it.

The same goes with the undead, they're going to be keeping out of sight of the adventurers. There will be at least one view, when I am done, that you can look straight down and see the adventurers and the scenery but zero undead, this is a non-negotiable goal for me for the atmosphere alone.

I'd like to practice my OSL/lighting effects with the necromancer's spell.

A few other things but whatever.

Gonna start sourcing my actors soon and doing some mock-ups on the 12 inch display.

A secret ''stretch goal'' is to make the undead and heroes removable (with rocks and bushes to replace them) so this could become the first square foot of a slowly growing undead board... but that'll take a fair bit of effort.

The road sits about 11.5 in off the base. I'd like to do a curved ramp up some time, but as they are donations to my flgs I'm going pass and get back to painting.

Good luck on the contest.. amazing looking stuff. Will be following for sure.

thanks mate... you should join in the fun nevertheless... there is always room on the desk for a new project^^

speaking of...update time....

fully movable...it already got the ramps for one side...what it definitely needs is a mechanism to lift the lifting bridge part...I still haven´t figured a way how to do this tho...

at noodleart...cool! with cobblestones this will look so much better in the end...!

and grimdork... cool concept... there is nothing bad about classics!!!

Ok, a couple of prototypes, what do you guys think... can I fit everything in on the 12x12" board?

Obviously I'll be making most/all of the terrain from scratch... may strip and use the trees, may use wire, not decided yet. The cave is going to be sunk down into the material of the board, basically I plan for everything to look better... these are just mock-ups for shape. I forgot to do a gibbet, probably across from the gates to the cemetery. Undead will be rising behind tombstones (probably not those), possibly slinking along the fence, maybe even some ghouls outflanking the adventurers down the side.

Think I can pack everything in on the smaller board or should I investigate a 16x16"?

I'm loving everybodies progress so far...Made me get motivated to put pencil to paper and scalpel to foam.
Here is where I am at for the moment. I'm planning to make a fairly complete section of an overpass then carefully wreck it then detail and paint it up.
I'm going to have to make a few more modular pieces of the road to make it useful for gaming (so it doesn't stand out as being the only bit of road on the board) but I think I'll focus my entry on the overpass section.

Everyone is already so far ahead of me!

I made some VERY crude sketches of the two ideas I am thinking about.

One is a bridge suspended between two large mushrooms and the other is a crossroads type bridge built over top of one large mushroom.

I think I am leaning more towards the crossroads type bridge. That one has the rougher sketch because I couldn't get the right perspective for the bridge.

Any thoughts?

For the second bridge, does each bridge start at the ground, go up over the mushroom at the cross, and then go back down? Or is it the central pillar to the bridges that go out horizontally (off the project)?

Leaning towards the second one either way, as the first one doesn't seem to give you much use, if you can just walk across the road at ground level. Unless that's a river.

All of the points start on the ground but I like the idea of one of the 4 bridges leading off the project.

I think that seals the second sketch as the one to go with for me.

Now I have to think about how wide I'm going to make this. This is for Fantasy so I've got to think about accommodating movement trays.

This is going to be a HUGE learning experience. The little objective marker I posted before is the only thing I've ever made.

I'm super nervous and excited.

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

Kickass, should be fun to follow along.

My biggest thing will be doing all the things I want to a solid degree but still finishing on time. At least I have a solid idea for this one unlike the last comp (and more time to boot!).

So I've done another sketch. This is an aerial view of the crossroad bridge.

Two of the sides of the bridge will lead directly off the project. One of them at the ground level and one up high.

The red circles are all mushrooms. The asterisk looking things are trees.

The bridge will be 5in wide. I've got to find and measure my troll model so I can determine how tall I need to make the mushrooms.

I think tomorrow I will spend some time figuring out how to make mushrooms out of paper mache.

Yeah, I should have plenty of time for this one, my diorama's deadline killed the other one for me, but it should totally work out.
