I'll agree with the general sentiment -- Space Marines. Specifically, beakie power armor on the Rogue Trader cover. That was like, love at first sight.

Terminators after that, because why else do I own like, 300 terminator models when they are all pretty awful?

"In the day" (when miniatures were lead and dinosaurs roamed the earth), I always thought Eldar had the nicest sculpts. I was so excited by Harlequin when they first came out. Now, I kind of hate Eldar models (the detail level of most models I find lacking), but I just love the Dark Eldar aesthetic.

I agree totally aahhhh. The lovely beaky boys, still keep a few sneaked into my dark angel squads!

Space Marines and Wraith Constructs, especially the Ghost Warriors, like this one...(spoilered because picture is massive )

Spoiler:

I found one of these at a car boot sale around 20 something years ago and bought it out of curiosity. A few days later a mate of mine gave me this...

And I fell in love. So for me, these are the most iconic things about GW.

Agreed on the MkVI helmets. They look kinda psychotic with the beakie helmets.

That is the current one, not the original one.

Also the positioning of the lower gun on this has been called iconic to many (if not a reason to come up with a creative answer when a kid asked "why is that gun there ?"

That is obviously because the grots that build the gargant were lazy and weak and could not lift the gun upper!

Also, why the random white dude? Is he lost? Too embarrased to ask directions at this point.

Plus theres a guy in the background just shooting his gun in the air like a redneck. Imperiums finest indeed.

The Apothecary, of course! (The banner gives the assumption of a command squad present). But yeah, lol, that redneck.

On topic - to quote others, without a doubt, the Space Marine.

He's not a redneck. He just had a hole blasted through his chest and is slumping back to his demise, while trying to reign death bolts until the very end.

Space Marines.

They have endured longer than anything else.

Imperial ships? Orks? Genestealers? All of those have undergone visual revamps over the years.

But Space Marines have barely changed in 25 years

No fair, one of them clearly has a pistol and a flamer in both hands.

I believe that's a full bolter and a hand flamer which is simply a CCW. That guy simply has the True Grit special rule.

Battle Titans (and scout titans). Because ridiculously huge mecha with guns.

Also, almost everything Battlefleet Gothic. The aesthetic of Imperial Navy, Space Marine and Chaos warships is just stunning, and the awesome artwork in the Shield Of Baal books and Extermination just irks me more that the game doesn't exist anymore...

Doesn't exist?

Why with imagination anything can exist!

In all seriousness find the rules online, print out some paper tokens to mark different ships (30mm for cruisers and smaller, 60mm for larger than that,) teach it to your friends (much more accessible then regular 40k imo.) And it exists again.

At least that is what I am doing.

What is original about them? Go read Nemesis the Warlock comic from 2000ad, you have thermight empire with emperor torquemada launching a space crusade against aliens that is fought by his terminators who are divided into chapters. The empire has medieval mood, there is khaos daemon fighting the empire, there are facist one liners, ornaments like the ones you can find in rulebooks now and stylised maps etc. GW only twisted it a bit, a nice twist considering the super evil facist empire in comic book became best guys you can find in 40k (well at least before tau bs) but thats it. Nothing original.

Now, visualy you can find every bit of space marine or terminator armour somewhere in 2000ad comic books, there was also some old sf magazine cover that provided a chestplate and general knightish image. Mix and match, nothing original.

Ofc 2000ad was ripping everyone off as well so thats all just rehashed stuff with a grimdark twist, thats what gw is good at. Ik not sure if there is anything in this thread mentioned that is not a blatant ripoff. I have doubts only about chainsword and washing machine dreadnought.

From the initial Age of Sigmar news thread, when its "feature" list was first confirmed:

It's like you take a Space Marine and say "what could make him cooler?" Instead of adding more super-genetic-psycho-organic modification, you take it all away. You have a regular human left in power armor and all the armies of hell at the gates. And she doesn't even flinch. Pure. Badass.

Iconic in its own way

Velma in 40k! Most internet places I visit like to make fun of this model, but I really like it, and the Sisters in general. I like that your average human still has a place, however small, on huge, destructive battlefields.

To me, the most iconic thing of 40k is orks! A friend of mine in high school had a ton of them that I had almost forgotten about, but when I was given the first Dawn of War for PC, the memories of all those angry green dudes came flooding back. Orks in a sci-fi setting are still very unique.
