I'd read by authors. ADB, Dan Abnett, Andy Chambers, Gav Thorpe, and Rob Sanders typically produce excellent novels. Never pick up a Ben Counter or McNeil book. Use it as kindling for a fire.

John French also writes great books. the Ahriman series is a good read.

agreed.

I'll put a list only of the novels, not short stories/audiobooks:

Great Reads
Horus Rising - Dan Abnett
Galaxy in Flames - Ben Counter
Mechanicum - Graham McNeill
The first heretic - Aaron Dembski-Bowden
Betrayer - Aaron Dembski-Bowden

Good Reads
False Gods (It's a really important book, but it could have been written better imho) - Graham McNeill
The Flight of the Eisenstein - James Swallow

Average Reads
Fulgrim - Graham McNeill
Know no fear - Dan Abnett

Not So Good Reads
Prospero Burns - Dan Abnett
Fear to treat - James Swallow

Time Wasters/Toilet Paper
Battle for the Abyss - Ben Counter (Come on, was he even trying when he did this one?)

I like how some authors span the entire spectrum

There're a few that have pretty great novels and others that make you think "Did he even read the previous lore before writing?" Which, in a positive way, motivates you to be flexible in terms of novels. The only author I feel is a quality check the 99% of times (in terms "how good is the book written and how much did i enjoy it") is ADB, but I must admit his pro-heretic books, even if I'm an heretic legions fan, screech a bit with others already done.
For example, in Know no fear, Guilliman is paused and cold. Even when Lorgar pushes him and mocks him, it can be seen it's the strategical character everyone say in other novels and the canon lore. But if you read Betrayer, he just spawns in the middle of Nuceria with an evident disadvantage just to punch Lorgar because he hates him and he's decided to kill him, even if Angron is 20m near him too, and he's in Lorgar's side. I mean, for me it's ok to have a Loyalist primarch beaten, but... it's weird. And a bit illogical for the so-called best strategist in the imperium.

Yea I agree. It's about time BL let this guy back in from the cold. Forgive and forget I think and let the man write.

Plagiarism. I read the incriminating 'evidence' seemed a little guilty but not unforgivable

What he did in Flesh & Iron seems pretty bad.

I'd like to see what he can do when does do it 100% clean.

I would eat my hat if he is ever allowed to write for BL again or for any firm tbh. It's not the type of thing a writer returns from. Kind of like fraud for an accountant. It's not great. Pity though he was pretty cool author.

The problem is category 1 and 5 are not mutually exclusive. Sometimes a great read is the read best done on the toilet.

There are books which we read on the toilet and then there are books which we use in the toilet and then they go into the toilet

Dead men walking by Steve Lyons is one I don't see talked about much, featuring Necrons and the Death Korp of Krieg I enjoyed my time with it.

I read Horus Rising and False Gods, they were ok I guess but I am struggling to get through Galaxy in Flames right now, I don't know what it is but I am.

Sgt. Vanden I bet Irish can do that by flashing his bear chest.
Sgt. Vanden Irish is the definition of a Dutch oven
