Thanks very much, Viterbi! The scouts remain... challenging. I'd love more, but the models are so boring, and I'm not sure how to spice them up - to the point where I've even considered grabbing some of the old goofy-posed OOP metal scouts. I've got a few more nearly finished coming sometime, though, so watch this space!

My next goal is to finish up a crusader squad. I've moved two primed templars onto the workbench, though I've yet to properly touch them. Hopefully I'll make some progress soon, as I think I can churn Templars out pretty quickly by this point.

Finally! First finished squad in Japan.

It's been too long since I got a whole unit done - in fact, I'm not sure I did in 2019, at all unless Rein and Raus count... Might've finished an Admech squad, too, but as they're on opposite sides of the planet, are they really completed?

Anyway! Crusader Squad: IForgotToLookAtMyListOfTemplar-yNamesThisMorning!

This five will hopefully be expanded upon, with a focus on assaulting and close range fighting, hence all the chainswords. I feel pretty good about how they've turned out, and I really like the Sword Brother, he more or less as I imagined. I also found out that I can knock out a Black Templar pretty quickly, which I'm very pleased with. Think I'm going to try to have at least one templar on the old work bench at any given moment, as I'm still flitting absent-mindedly between projects. Once I've cleared my workbench of a couple of things off the to-paint queue, I'm going to try and throw myself at the Templars a bit harder.

As always, thanks for stopping by! C&C always appreciated!

Squad 2 (? 6 dudes, but all destined to be beloved meatshield Neophytes for a crusader squad) done!

These guys are a helluva throwback, easily one of my oldest efforts, and on some of the faces I think it super shows (the Sargent Telion is more recent, and I think I did a much better job, if I do say so myself ).

But they have been a learning curve, and it was nice to finish them and being able to look back on all I've learned. They'll get a spot of varnish in the morning, if I can do it before work (shout out to all my 'essential' battle brothers here). But these boys are finally done, and with that. I also like to think that those fast-and-ready conversions with the fantasy daggers really look the part. I'm super glad, in hindsight, that I nervously took those clippers to plastic. One of my more ambitious early conversions, but I love 'em, and would do it again anytime! (Had this thing in the back of my mind with the leftover maces from the flagellant kit, but scouts are ¥4100 a box, so not on yer nelly)

All of my scouts. Finally finished. Feels good to say.

Thanks for stopping by!

Congrats on finishing the squad! Your conversions really paid off and Sarge looks like a proper Sarge.

Thanks Viterbi! He was kind of an impulse addition, just because slogging through those face sculpts is so unrewarding. It was nice to paint a scout with a face that actually looked good, and I can't help but wonder if there were ever fancy prototypes for a re-deux of the scout molds, with nice faces etc. that just got shelved because of the Space Marine re-boot.

I might use him as a sarge if I ever run these guys as a scout squad, outside the crusader mob I'm accumulating, but otherwise, in my headcannon, he's just an ordinary Neophyte. In Damnation Crusade, there's this bit about how if the Initiate marine a Neophyte is apprenticed to dies, but the Neophyte doesn't, then they have to start their training again, from the beginning, under another Black Templar. I like to imagine that the not-Telion guy has had decades of experience, but has always had his trainer killed at the last possible minute, but he's still really decorated and respected, but held back by the rituals and superstitions of the chapter.

But he also means that the scouts I have out here outnumber my marines! I better get painting so I can run that crusader squad properly...

Yo!

Can you believe it's been like 5 years since I painted a Sister of Battle?!?!?
I've had this particular mini since I was in Uni. Initially brush-primed with abaddon black, fresh from the pot, I decided to give her and her sisters a new lease of life after I found a replacement for my multi-melta retributor backpacks!!! Also because I'm still salty as all hell about how much sisters minis cost here in Japan...
So, I stripped the kinda crappy paintwork, and got cracking.
This month hasn't had a lot of hobby time. Work is super busy, and more than a few times in the last week I've gotten in and just flopped down and slept. But I managed to squeeze a bit of painting time in for her - special marker as my first mini of this wing of this project, as she's stood triumphantly on the skull of a foul ork!

Hope you all enjoy!

Nice clean paintjob and good for her to stand on the dirty xenos skull as a sign of her holiness! Hope you get some more hobby time soon, always good to see more sisters coming along.

Thanks very much Viterbi! Very kind of you to say! It's a lot better than how she's looked for the last 4-and-a-bit years, so I'm very pleased! I think the pose is as much down to her legs getting a little warped when I took her off the slotta as anything else, but it's a neat little pose, regardless.

It's still a bit up in the air, but I might be getting a bit of hobby time this week. That or I'll be really really busy with a lot of overtime!

Great looking black templars. And love the hazard stripes on the sister's bolter. When the force is all together, you should do an army shot based around the old 3rd edtion starter art.

Thanks very much! I've been a bit cracked out on painting hazard stripes lately - the effect is quite striking, but I feel like my freehand is improving a lot, and it's a simple way of visually tying together a lot of my imperium armies. I got the idea from the classic Blanche SoB codex artwork, and I feel like it suits the old metals. I wasn't really sure how to paint the bolter casings initially. Usually for my Templars I do 'em black, but I think with these flatter, older metal sculpts, that would make them a bit too indistinct. The yellow stripes are suitably retro and hi-vis, imo, and add a bit more impact to the otherwise limited pallet of the Order of our Martyred Lady.

Thanks so much! I think every Templar player dreams of being able to do that artwork justice - I certainly put together my inquisition goons with the cowled, mysterious warband in the back in mind. I know I've mentionned it before in this thread, but it really does put a silly grin on my face whenever someone references that painting in relation to my minis! Really appreciate it!

Finally got this guy finished, bringing the number of Initiates up to the number of Neophytes. Brings me to a Crusader Squad of 12, plus the Techmarine.

I figure I could probably use him as a banner bearer at some point, but for the time being, he's just another battle brother. I do love my banners *drools in awful exchange rate at the HH command squads*, but I also always wanted to kind of have a very flag-heavy army, to give it that crusading, slightly disorderly, highly personalized, heraldry-heavy feeling like the John Blanch artworks. With that in mind, I gave him this leftover (and totally gorgeous) part from the Custodes I bought to supplement my Inquisitors. I also like how well the FW arms that I used mesh with the 20+ year old sculpt - whoever was responsible for the re-design of the MK. IV armor did an excellent job capturing the feel of the orginal, which is equally really nicely imagined.

I slapped some plastic rivets on one of the pauldrons - these are tiny lil kotobukiya ones, but I really like 'em. I've got a few more templars under construction (a handful of old termies and a couple of early 2000s multipart marines) that I'm planning on decking out with some of these too, as they're really fun to use, but add a nice bit of variation in a pretty simple way.

Anyway! Thanks for stopping by! Hope ya enjoy the pictures! Feel free to leave a comment or just shitpost at me.

Yo! Trying to get back onto the old painting horse during my first actual chill day off in fething ages.
I guess this counts as a black templar, right?

Hope you enjoy!

Nice detail with the damage and skull showing. Was that a conversion/greenstuff or a bit from the ork kit? Either way, nicely executed paintjob.

Thanks very much!
Actually, I drilled out a space marine helmet, and put one of the citadel plastic skulls in the hole. After a bit of slicing, managed to get a respectable looking bit of battle damage on the helmet so that the skull was visible. With hindsight, I'd probably put my hobby knife to slightly more work, and make things a bit more battered and detailed, but otherwise I'm pretty pleased with the whole thing!

Well done on the helmet, drilling out enough space to fit a skull in there is a great idea.

Also, you're caution stripes on the Chainswords in the previous posts look terrific!

Thanks and thanks again! I always kind of had a thing for retrohammer caution stripes, and then when I got halfway decent at painting them... the urge to put them on everything became strong within me. I feel like it's a nice way to add a splash more colour to the Templars, and gives off a really satisfying pulpy feeling.

Arakasi wrote:I was so distracted by the partially visible Meganob I didn't even realise the helmut was a conversion - well done!

Arakasi, I am not worthy of your praise! Watch this Meganob space!
...not too closely, though, mind. Do all meganobs take so long to paint? As much as I adore the sculpt, he's become a total albatross - I'm not even finished the body yet, but I'm constantly finding stuff that isn't close enough to finished yet.

Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll wrote:That helmet is pretty brilliant detail, fantastic execution as well!

Cheers! Drilling was a little bit tough, but honestly it was one of those conversions that's so fun to do that it was totally worth it.

As soon as I had the idea, I couldn't resist. I super recommend it to anyone who is curious about giving it a try, though. Because there's so much plastic in there, it's really easy to correct angles and such, all your mistakes are left on the inside, and making a little gap so that the skull pokes through just certain parts is easy enough to pull off. I found weathering the trickiest, but a lot of that is just down to how I paint my ork bases, and also that weathering black is a bit of a pain in the butt.

Such a neat little conversion, very evocative of 40k.

Not sure I'm qualified to answer that - all my minis take too long to paint! Is it the old metal Meganob or a new plastic one? I have one completed old metal Meganob and four heavily converted paint in progress old metal Meganobz - all from many years ago, which I hope to complete next year... so maybe I can answer you then .

Thanks so much for the kind words! I always liked the idea of some battlefields in 40k being littered with the detritus of centuries of war, and making this a little nod to how I kind of see my Orks as the foil to my Templars. Totally by accident, but it wound up in perfect stomping distance from the Ork's foot, which kind of made it feel like the opening scene from a Dawn of War trailer when I was focusing my macro lens on it hahaha.

Hahaha, it's one of the metal ones - picked him up second hand out here.
Ahh, well, I guess I'll race ya! He's currently number 2 priority on my painting bench, but I've been picking away at him for probably over a year at this point. Probably looking at 2022 as well lol.
