I hope this gets fixed in the general's handbook 2 or the next FAQ. As it stands now you can't use all the models in the box for matched play (spirit hosts as battle line + hexwraiths) since the mortis engine doesn't have Nighthaunt. Whereas all the other models have both keywords.... If they fix the keywords on the mortis engine I'd buy the box immediately.

I play:
40K: Daemons, Tau
AoS: Blades of Khorne, Disciples of Tzeentch
Warmachine: Convergence of Cyriss
Infinity: Haqqislam, Tohaa
Malifaux: Bayou
Star Wars Legion: Republic & Separatists

I'm still learning about matched play.
What about having 'nighthaunt' or not having it prevents its use.
I thought if they were all Death you could use them together.

Yes, you can play them as part of a just 'Death' army , but the spirit hosts will not be battle line units. Battle line units for just 'Death' are zombies/skeletons/ghouls and you are required to take a certain number of battle line units depending on the point size of the game. If you choose Nighthaunt allegiance then the Spirit Hosts in the box become battleline and all the models in the Malignant box have that keyword except the Mortis engine. Currently there is no battle line for a Malignant army either....

The Skeletons are nice, but the units you get are meh.
Ghouls is great too, with that and another box of ghouls I'm nearly at a giant horde army

I recently picked up the SC:Skeleton hordes box.

I did it mostly for the mortach. AoS seems to be driven by buffs and synergy, and Manfred seems to have a chunk of that, while still being reasonably tank-y and hitting pretty hard. The other ones look nice, but need the summoning rules fixed before they can be used in matched play.

Skeletons can work. Against things without rend, they are crazy hard to put down. I’m starting to feel that they need to hit the table in blocks of 30. Although 20 can work. You want the extra attacks per model. So despite the fact that I have ~75 skeletons on the shelf, more are welcome. In larger games I think aiming for 3x30 blocks might be the way to go.

Not sure about the black knights. Classicly, a block of mounted wights formed the core of my old fantasy lists, so I still field them. They are not as tough as I’d like, and not very killy. and a little overpriced for what they do. Not sure if I’ll build the ones from the SC box as more, or try the alt build as the hexwratih ghost guys.

Full Disclosure: When I started WHFB Undead back in the day, my goal was a rot-free army, so zombies and ghouls never really appealed to me. YMMV, and from what I hear, probably should. in a better way, if you do like those things.

So I don't create a new thread unnecessarily, how long after a faction release is it before a start collecting box shows up generally?

Fyreslayers still don't have one which i think is a shame! They're way too pricey as they stand now.

they may eventually, just to drum up some interest for them. $30 chars and $40 as the cheapest unit makes em a bit pricey.

Yeah, the problem is that the main unit of 10 Vulkite Berzerkers is a complete and utter rip-off compared to things like the Kharadron's Arkanaught unit released later with the same amount of figures for 15 freaking dollars less.

That is a hefty difference. costs made me avoid fyreslayers

Exactly! a nice fyreslayer starter set built along the lines of the others (hero, monster thing, basic infantry) would be wonderful. otherwise, as much as like dwarves all kinds, it's not possible for me.

The same goes for the kharadron too, though, even though they are somewhat better pricewise. They still are way too hefty of an investment for an actual force to work for me.

One of the things that makes me interested in this AoS Skirmish is that a single box can be a whole force... I am thinking it will be the thing to get me "all in" if you will. I am getting rid of all my "legacy" armies and just sticking with the "AoS" forces and seeing how this does.

Thinking of picking up the Skeleton Horde one.

But my concern with starting a Skeleton army is that there aren't a lot of "new" miniatures for them.

I wouldn't want to collect an army that only has a small number of options, or a small number of round bases / plastic. I would not start an army that is mostly finecast, or on square / rectangular bases.

I'm also considering them for Skirmish, since large scale AOS battles do not interest me.

Can someone help me out here? The path of least resistance is to buy Orruks or Sigmarines since these factions seem to have got a lot of love.

Looking at MongooseMatt's review, i think you are right and then some. For fyreslayers it looks like one box of basic guys would be enough for the basic force + a leader, so... still pricey honestly but more in the realms of possible.

I'd like to see how it works in an actual game first mind you!

some of those forces do look really really small, but I would guess that starting reknown is really something your group can raise or lower at their discretion. It may be a lot more affordable at this point. Truth be told this is likely the best way to test out a faction before buying it.

What I don't really know yet is how large a warband will grow in a 6-Battleplan campaign - there might be a very good reason to start with very small warbands!

Provided I haven't missed any other ways of increasing renown and with a starting warband of 25 renown,if you win a major victory every game, roll the +6 renown result on the treasure table after every game and roll the maximum bonus renown for the 4th battleplan, for the 6th game you'd be maxed out at 123 Renown (incidentally if your opponent had lost every game and never gotten any bonus renown from the treasure table they would be at 55 renown)

my group has decided to start at 36 renown this lets you make a legal in faction list for any hero in the book (Megaboss and 2 Ardboys etc) 30 renown lets you use any hero (but that Megaboss is only got 2 grots for company)

the other option was to let a new hero takeover generalship when you purchase them (doesn't feel right having a warchanter being in charge when you have a megaboss on hand.)
