Subject: Nintendo Switch anyone? Share those Zelda stories!
Thread unlocked because we are an independent forum and it is okay to criticize Nintendo here. If anyone wants to surround themselves with unalloyed praise for Nintendo, there is probably a FB group for that.
Meanwhile - the Switch is a controversial product for a number of reasons. Even people who want one are a bit miffed at Nintendo right now because, as always, Nintendo is not getting its product to market. And there are some concerns about the product's quality. Finally, it's not totally unreasonable to find what's on offer lacking relative to the price tag (although I am not in that camp, personally).
As far as comparisons to the WiiU - I can tell you this much, it was very simple to get a WiiU a month or so after Christmas. Let's see how easy it is to get a Switch next month.

I used to love Nintendo right up until the Wii, they haven't put out a real console since 2001. At this point I kinda wish they'd just do handhelds and third party games for Sony and Microsoft, but they seem able to survive just fine with these gimmick devices.
This essentially is a new handheld. It just has a very convenient method of projecting to your TV.

While I am super stoked for what seems to be a worthy addition to the Zelda franchise, I'm going to need a decent Mariokart and perhaps Bomberman to entice me over from the PS4.

Done?
Super excited for MK8DX. 8 is my favorite game in the series since MK64 and the only thing that held it back was a lack of battle mode. Adding that back in, making it portable and trivial to play 4 player? Sold.
I've heard Bomberman is solid, just overpriced. I keep meaning to pick it up as it doesn't take much to let it go 8 player.

I'm probably the exact opposite. I'd use it as a handheld maybe 10% of the time and the rest as a normal console
For me it just lives up to the promise of... well, Switching. I sit down to play it like a normal console but then my daughter wants to watch something so I flip to handheld for a bit before docking it again to play on the TV. In doing so I've noticed that it feels more familiar in handheld mode on the couch overall, but I'd generally rather be playing it projected on the TV.
It reminds me a lot of the Super Game Boy and Game Boy Advance adapter for the GameCube, which were two golden eras for portables as far as I'm concerned. I find it hard to play very meaningful games on a dedicated portable. Monster Hunter 4 and the like are cool, but when I'm home I want to use my TV if possible so the gameplay gets hacked up and I never get engrossed. When there have been good options to play on the handheld and TV, I've generally put the time in and really enjoyed the portable epics of those eras.

BestBuy had them in stock online early this afternoon. I ordered one a minute or so after a friend did - fortunately, his order went through ... unfortunately, mine did not. Hard to feel positive about Nintendo when they do this every time.

Same thing happened with the NES Classic. Would be nice to have some consistency

Well, they do have consistency. Consistently out of stock.

That's lame.
I do think they could clearly handle launches better - but I'm sure this is some Nintendo Marketing Genius' idea of...something?
But thanks to you posting in this thread I remembered I have to pick up Zelda for my daughter's birthday - so thanks!

Luckily, I've got quite a few games to keep me satisfied at the moment, but it seems like it is going to be an ordeal to nab one for the next few months.
So. Got a heads up yesterday afternoon that WalMart had the Switch in stock online. Sure enough, I can add one to my cart. Sign in to check out ... and what's this? I have to change my password. That process takes approximately 1.5 minutes. Sign in - "we're sorry that item is out of stock." FFFFFUUUU-
BUT ... later that night, I find out through the small town grapevine that Best Buy just got some in on the truck. Spring into action! When I get to BestBuy, the first thing I see is a 10 or 11-y.o. kid chanting to himself: I got a Nintendo Switch! I got a Nintendo Switch! I got a Nintendo Switch! Soon, I was (internally) chanting the same.
A little later on ... playing Breath of the Wild ... yes this was worth it ...

About four hours into BotW, I realized I wasn't just having fun - I was feeling grateful ... not just for the luxuries of having time to play a video game or owning an expensive and somewhat rare toy but also gratitude for living in a time capable of producing such a beautiful experience. I was pretty skeptical of the perfect review scores but BotW lives up to them IME so far.
As for the Switch: as promised, I have been using it as a handheld. The screen is excellent. I don't feel like I am missing out on the sweeping beauty of Hyrule because the image is bright and sharp. The controllers on either end of the screen have made my hands cramp a bit - probably because I haven't played a handheld for several years now.
BotW definitely isnt a 10. I personally dont think its a 9. Id give it a really solid 8 hands down. Its a really good game for sure and a must have on the switch. Im kindda stuck because I want to buy the Legocity game coming out....but I really want MarioKart8 as well and I dont have the money for both. *le sigh*
Id also like to buy Bomberman too but Im not paying the asking price. 30 bucks maybe but Ill hold out for less most likely

That scratching thing I think comes down to how people handle the docking of the Switch. Ive had ours for a couple weeks and its not scratched at all. Though. a screen protector or at least a cloth to cover the switch dock is a good idea because even though Im careful, the screen is still just plastic

Don't know if this is the place to post this, but a really awesome looking book on KS at the moment - the Unofficial SNES/Super Famicom Compendium. 300 pages of game and box art from that machine, have to say this is a definite buy for me!
Well the Nintendo Direct dropped yesterday and showed off a ton of new games coming to Switch. I havnt watched it yet but my son was pretty excited about it. I do know thwy are bringing Payday2 to the system which made me excited and theres a new RPG called Battle Chasers that Im curious to check out.
Speaking of Squares got an RPG called Project Octopath Traveler that really has my interest. Anywho Ill watch the direct later then post some vids. Happy times!

Ill say the protectors are necessary. The screen is plastic so scratches are easier to put on it. Though as far as scratches while docking Im gunna go ahead and mostly blame the user. I still am scratch free but thats because my son and I take care to dock it properly and not just drop the system down all whilly nilly. And no docking is a pretty simple process. Id suggest get inthe habit of tilting the switch so its backside is sliding down the dock and not the screen

I assume what you mean by giving your daughter a Switch for her birthday what you really mean is that you got yourself a Switch but are deeply ashamed to admit it. Why must you turn the Video Games forum into a house of lies?

I was impressed at how hard they grabbed onto the multi player thing. Its sooo easy to just hand out controllers and start yelling at my family! Thats something I have seriously missed over the years is just sitting next to people you like and insult their skills face to face.......though admittedly my son (who is 12) has become a pro trash talker thanks to me and the biggest problem is his wit is far sharper than mine and occasionally gets a dig so good I have to resort to disconnecting his controller in response lol
