We were investigating the working class standards of living in Belfast in the late 19th/early 20th century. Unfortunately for me, there was only one permanent job to be had at the end, and there were 3 of us. I didn't get it.
After that I went back to working for the city council, as a binman.....
I hear comments like these from humanities graduates all too often. The explosion in humanities courses bears absolutely no relation to the job prospects at the end. I've come to believe the University system is really quite broken in the way it misleads the young, miring them in debt and giving little back that minimal self-study couldn't have given them. I've pointed several people like yourselves in the direction of academic librarianship now after they've graduated, as it's a well-paying, low stress, good security job that means they can still keep their hand in on the University circuit.
As for me? Right now, I'm sitting in a dingy hotel room in Newcastle. I'm digging into the Armstrong-Whitworth archives this week to pull up as much stuff as I can on their military technology and relations with the Admiralty in the 1870-1914 period. Many minute books and hastily scrawled letters are being photographed so I can extract the juicy bits later....
I am Darth Vadar. Seriously, that is what I do. No one wants to see me in their facility.
Like Kronk I am a Six Sigma/LEAN guy. I am a professional executive. I currently run a Contact Center for a Mega-corp no one has heard. I run it because the last guy got force choked to death.
In addition, I own 4 local businesses in my relatively small, rural town. Next step for me? Slumlord!
I am married with a kid.
I have no idea how I get anytime to hobby, but I do!

Its fun, even if it is a bit dangerous. Its something I can see myself doing for awhile.
My best friend's girlfriend does something similar that. She's just finished her masters - then MD down the line. That's a lot of college required for that - do you have your own practice or do you work for a center/hospital?
I work for a non-profit that is contracted from a hosptial.
It didnt require a MD, that is what my Bosses boss has. Mine required a HS diploma. BUT the prefer people with degrees, especially related fields, everyone in my training class has a degree.
I did a PhD in computer science, more precisely graph theory.
And now, well, my job has absolutely noting to do with my PhD or basically anything I learned in academics ^^.
I work IT (apparently that's the expression) at the BEST ESPORTS BAR FRANCHISE EVAR!!1. Okay, we are the only one too.
I can describe my job with a song I guess :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StTqXEQ2l-Y Except maybe for the pay ^^. But the work atmosphere, the colleagues, the boss, the taking imitative and being involved beyond just IT, all of this is pretty neat!

This sounds like an amazing gig.

I've been a Registered Nurse since 2008. Spend the past 8 years working for the Department of Veterans Affairs and recently transferred to the Bureau of Prisons.
I manage Parts and Accessories Departments at the largest of 3 family owned motorcycle dealerships. Previously to my taking over, the job was done by two people, one in each respective department. Now I handle both departments. Compartmentalizing is the key!
I get a decent hourly wage as befits someone doing the job of two people, plus a piece of everything sold in both departments, as well as whats sold to my service department. It being spring and near summer time = $$$$.
But the recent string of rainy weather is the bane of my existence. Also wish I had 1 more employee, but no good applicant has applied. Its mostly braindead goons and gangbangers (being outside of Baltimore) that think they'll ride bikes as a job that are applying.
Winter is hit or miss, I prefer it when it snows as I sell plow kits for our ATVs and UTVs. Mild winters can eat a fat one!
Its a mostly fun job, I love learning about new technology in safety gear and passing that on to customers. Upselling a customer from a Bell Qualifier, a decent midrange DOT approved helmet ($110) to an Arai Corsair-X, one of the top helmets available to consumers ($900+) is a great feeling.
The only stress is from the occassional problem customers and somewhat lagging sales, due to the general malaise in brick and mortar retail in America, due to strong competition online, Revzilla in my particular situation.

I certainly can't complain. The money is good (better than what I'd make civvie side at my experience), and the job is challenging. I've sailed around the Med and had a few trips down to the Caribbean and the American east coast. The flying can be a little boring at times, as the ocean all looks the same, but we get some good flights crawling along coast lines and making news when we shouldn't.
Its a work hard, play hard job, which I need in my life because I'm otherwise fairly unmotivated and this keeps me challenged.
The downside is the time away from home and that every 2-4 years I can be told to move across the country to do a job I may or may not want to do.

Worked as a state prison guard for 12 years lost my job last year due to state budget cuts that closed the facility. Now work in the insurance field in claims so I still deal with hostile people.

But the client/shiv ratio is lower now, right?

Honestly having a stab proof vest while working anywhere near insurance seems like a smart move to me XD
