If they want to be identified by name they can post here. But I have certainly argued with people who have right-wing social views, about their right-wing social views, and they were not banned for it. In fact, I've probably had more bans for arguing from the left-wing position but not being polite enough in doing so.

Will the real social right wingers please stand up?

Please stand up?

Actually, I just checked the PM, and I appear to be misrepresenting Yakface. He was speaking specifically in reference to posting signatures.

Mea culpa!

And the reaction to those views may vary, depending not just on that presentation but also on history of previous similar discussions or any number of other factors that we may feel could affect the way the community will react to said airing of views. So, yes, we may 'censor' more extreme views where we deem that to be appropriate. Not because we disagree with them, but because of the mess that they are most likely going to cause on the forum.

I'm sorry, I must admit that I'm confused.

Here I was thinking that this was a website which catered to rational, civilized human beings who both are responsible for their own conduct and are sufficiently emotionally mature so as not to "make a mess" simply because they see people writing things that they don't like.

...

...

But now that you mention it...

Fair point!

Perspectives from other boards. I frequent history forums and gun forums (who knew) quite a bit. What appears to work best is either a free for all mini forum with minimal moderation, or an absolute ban on politics. Policies in between tend to run into problems. Hence why, although I participate in them (love to discuss them) I have no problem eliminating them.

Its when some are eliminated, or some opinions it ok to free fire on that problems really start.

Remember Mods are volunteer (except for the free booze and socks) and don't generally need the grief. They have enough to deal with in tactics/list subforum sections.

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

...Did you not read anything posted in the thread thus far? It's one thing not to read all 500 pages of the Mega Thread because Jesus by the time you read all 500 it would probably be locked already, but this is two pages long and you've already wholly failed to respond to anything anyone has actually said...

...You've made no attempt to address the previous users point in response to this idea, and have simply word vomited it back into the topic with no attempt to further the discussion.

Yes, I have read the entirety of the thread. And it's plain as day that you've allowed yourself to get unnecessarily emotional over my post, and went into attack mode hurling insults. This is the exact kind of unnecessary escalation that gets the US politics thread locked over and over again.

Maybe we don't even collectively deserve a US Politics thread if we can't speak to each other in a civil manner.

Lord of Hats, if you're having trouble seeing where your reply to my post went a bit off the rails, compare it to Peregrine's reply, who also disagreed with my premise (and who also incidentally disagrees with alot of my personal politics) to your own. It is not necessary to go immediately from "zero" to "insult", and it's wholly within your control to avoid doing so.

then ignore them, plain and simple. its real easy to put someone on ignore and ignore them.

I already addressed this a couple posts ago. Ignoring someone isn't a solution because it leaves the incorrect information out there for people to be persuaded by, not realizing that it's garbage that everyone else is ignoring because they don't want to deal with the person posting it. That might not be a problem if the garbage is something like "LOL YOUR A COMMIE TRAITOR/HITLER-LOVING FASCIST", but if someone (to give a completely made-up example) posts "economic growth was X% this year as a direct result of {my side's tax proposals}" that's a plausible thing to say even if the X% number is a blatant lie.

Dude, you're tilting at windmills. Seriously. "Someone will read X and think X is right because I didn't show him the light! I have to save these people!"

Seriously. That's past idealistic and creeping into scarily full of yourself!

You need to get your wet, bro.

To build on what Janthkin has said, much of it is a matter of time for the mods. The Off-Topic forum, as mentioned before, is a spill-over forum so that people don't bring that nonsense into the rest of the forums.

I guess I don't buy the 'matter of time for the mods' argument when a couple mods were very active in the thread, and at times seemed to be involved in the Rule 1 breaking once in a while themselves.
