But 5th, for all its flaws, is easily the best of them.
Yup. I agree, and I also started playing with 2nd edition. I have fond memories of some dudes from our local putting together an army of nothing but Spacewolf Terminators with missiles to play some GW guys who were coming down to show the flag. Good times.

1st edition here all the way, yes you could break it (same as every edition afterwards so far), but as a small scale squad based skirmish game for telling stories with it was wonderful.
Treat it as a semi RPG semi table top war game and its very good, easy to go down the rabbit hole with the add ons (Robot programming!) but that was all part of the charm.
Plus the background was at its best, not taking itself too seriously and not darker than a dark thing at midnight.
This is the edition that brought Waarrggh the Orks, and Ere We Go.. say no more really.
Plus the 1st edition book has so many little touches that just doesn't take itself too seriously.

I started in 3rd and I would have to say that 5th edition was the best.
It wasn't a perfect ruleset ( then again none of them were), but it was the one that it felt like most everyone was okay with and had the most fun with all nighter Apocalypse battles and the like. Definitely a bit of nostalgia here, and utter contempt for the mess that was 6th edition (not that 7th was any better) as that saw what amounted to a mass exiting of players in the area I had lived in at that point in time.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

It seems that 5th was the most well liked edition here.
The consensus does seem to be that GW backslide with 6th really hard, and 7th is a mixed bag- most people agree that it is an improvement, but few people think it is as good as 5th (or 4th or 3rd).

6th is still my fav out of all 7 editions that I've played. It had the most concise rule set with the most options for play. 2nd was a blast to play, and 1st was my first, but 3rd turned me away from 40k, while 4th brought me back and 5th was so abusable. 7th is just crazy train going off the rails. 8th looks to be fun, though.
