Really interesting to see your take on the Repentia. So many of us have whined about them and their tennis outfits, but really cool to see you actually do something about it!

Thanks for sharing

Barbarian mercenary:

While technically standalone because I felt like converting and painting one of the Godsworn Hunt models, if I were to update my Cities of Sigmar army I'd source my models from the Chaos range to have thematically appropriate models rather than transplanted men of the Empire. I used those to a degree back in the day to get my army up and running, but the idea didn't appeal then and it's not gotten better since. Whereas Chaos received a host of new, good-looking models in the meantime.

Added purpose of the model was to test AK Interactive basing material on it that I got a while ago. I like it, but I may need better tools to get smoother dunes.

Barbarian looks great, and the base looks pretty good, although I agree that finer tools may help with building up sand dune type structures. Or maybe a couple of fine layers?

Yeah, multiple layers is probably the way to go. I have a coarser and a finer texture that I applied in that order and tried to blend a bit, with the coarser one drying notably faster. Makes it harder to shape when one is starting to get rigid while the other is still wet mush, but since the paintjob is just a wash and highlight, I depend on having the differently colored textures on there to a degree. Not sure how to go about that yet, but I'm going to have to give layering the stuff separately a try to get taller dunes and see how the finer one blends as a topper of sorts.

I also considered one of those silicone tipped tools for shaping the texture, but they seem to be out of stock every time I look.

WIP of my Mistress of Repentance:

Since she's converted I technically wanted to post a picture prior to starting to paint her, but it kind of slipped my mind at the time. Instead, I'll use the opportunity to rectify something else that slipped my mind: noting down the paints I use for my Battle Sisters...

So, here's the important foundation of their look, as seen on the Mistress:

Chaos Black Primer
Solid layer or Dryad Bark
Good coverage of drybrushed Jokaero Orange
Broad spot highlighting with drybrushed Luganeth Orange
Light overall drybrush of Ushabti Bone followed by spot highlighting with stippled, fairly thick Ushabti Bone
Very light coverage of Pallid Wych Flesh, drybrushed or stippled as needed, with a good helping of stippled Pallid Wych Flesh to finalize the spot highlights

That'll provide an nice, grainy basecoat with inbuilt highlights for the light coat of Skeleton Horde Contrast paint that finalizes the look of the armor.

Back to the conversion, while I generally like the starter set Mistress best and can get behind the one from the Repentia box as well, there's no way I'm going to have any of those loose whips in my army. They're going to snap if you look at them funny, never mind transporting them to the local store or using them in games. A bit of an exaggeration, granted, but I have always valued sturdiness in my models, and the Mistresses take it too far for my taste. So I replaced her right hand whip with the book from the Repentia box Mistress, added the whip from the same kit to her belt and covered up the most severe cut (that's the book she had on her belt) with a pistol holster I wanted to have anyway. I added a second belt to give the holster a better look and cut into the right foot to angle it a little better. Pretty easy conversion, and a lot less work than I thought when I cam up with the plan.

In other news I've actually been painting a few more Sisters so that I'll eventually have full squads to show off and my Exorcist's assembly is making progress as well. Plus I'm converting a Preacher now that I hope I want forget to take any pictures of when the time comes.

The Mistress of Repentance is painted:

It took an undue amount of time to get around to painting her since I mostly worked on Star Wars Legion models since the previous WIP picture, but I'm a bit in the mood for 40k again at the moment, and I'm trying to make the most of it. I'm also working on Sisters to finish the Repentia and Retributor squads and I'm slowly putting paint on the Exorcist.

On the modeling front...

Ministorum Preacher WIP, spoilered for a little NSFW:

Spoiler:

It'll be good to get a priest painted just to see how it fits in the army. I don't want the priesthood to share the same color scheme as my Sororitas order, but obviously they're supposed to go together. So I'm thinking white and a reddish purple as similar but distinct colors of the Sisters' red and beige.

I also started work on the first Novitiate. They're not going to be big conversions, but I don't like the fleur on the forehead. It's far too dominating for my taste. But boy, is that thing nasty to remove what with it extending over the nose. I tried to preserve plastic to carve out a nose but that didn't work so well. I'm likely going to have to to just sculpt new noses on these models. I was always going to do that with the forehead but had hoped to save a little work.

Small update with a Novitiate WIP:

Like I said in the last post, it's nothing big as far as conversions go, but it changes the balance of the model considerably as far as I'm concerned. Shouldn't be too hard to get that done on the two squads I want.

I don't find the GW style appealing, but Your Mistress of Repentance looks at least interesting. Dusty, almost like an animated culpture, but well contrasted by a cape and fires. A bit more prominent highlight would have made that effect more striking, but I like her as she is. Congratulations!

New Sister Repentia:

I wasn't sure if I have a closeup of scripture yet, and this is a fairly good model to show how I'm doing it on my Sisters.

She's the sixth model of the squad, so only three more to go until the Repentia squad is finished. Hurray for progress!

I don't think Repentia have a squad leader, but if I'm ever in need of one, this is a good one as she's lugging around a lot more tat than the other Sisters.

I had to sculpt the hood because she's from the launch box and there was no good head for her. Neither hooded nor easily shaved to match the other bald ones in the squad. Just this weird half hair cut.

The first Sister Novitiate is painted:

That was nice and easy. I went with white for the headdress because it's already a color I used and as on offshoot of Sacred Rose white fits fine.

I painted this Imperial Fist for the March painting challenge:

I tried a different way of painting the armor to the last Imperial Fist I painted (found on the previous page). They're both based on a Contrast layer for the base yellow, but I went lighter on it this time for an overall lighter, less orange yellow. Not sure which one I like better, or if I chose either if I were to paint more Imperial Fists or tried something in the middle instead. So many ways to paint yellow...

I converted a Reductus Saboteur for my Genestealer Cult:

It's nothing big, but I wanted Kaboom Girl to have a tail. She already has two alien arms but not much else to make her look like a hybrid. I really like the base model, but I thought that needed improving.

As a side effect I removed her pants as a skirt accommodates a tail better. Also the right arm has a short sleeve that I removed because the left arms are sleeveless by default, and I just prefer her to be fully sleeveless due to that.

Fitting the tail could have been easy, but you can tell that I was sloppy and cut away too much to fit it under the cloak. I had to do a bit of resculpting because of it. No big deal, but with a bit more care that wouldn't have been necessary.

Not sure when I'm going to get around to painting her, but she'll set the standard for the army's color scheme. I've had a terribly hard time settling on a color scheme for my Genestealer. It's a problem that goes back literal decades. I've never settled on one that I like. Hopefully that changes this time around.

In other news, I painted a Vampire Lord for October's painting challenge. May as well have it here for completion's sake.

Thank you.

I'm not sure black works for me. I considered something in the vein of Xenomorphs with a glossy black, but the test model didn't come out well. That was a while ago though and my black is better these days, but I'm not sure.

Currently I'm considering red as something warm and lively for the carapace. Hot pink may be a little too neon for an army that is otherwise pretty muted and industrial. Not sure I know how to balance that. The original idea when I got my first cultists, and which I'm still fond of, was to go with grey, black and yellow for the outfits (including hazard stripes, because safety comes first!). Technically there should be a shade of red that goes well with that, but I'm not sure.

And then there's the consideration that I don't just want the carapace color to go with the range of human skin colors, but may want to convert the odd Xenos, predominantly Tau, to be a part of the army. And I'm not traditionally fond of mixing blue and red. So I'd at least want to take up the red all the way to orange if I went with that.

It's all still very hazy.

My only regret is that I did not think to make a Jeanstealer joke when I posted the picture.

I got around to painting the Ministorum Preacher I converted almost a year ago.

Picture spoilered for a little NSFW because she is protesting the cathedral's no shirt, no shoes, no service policy:

Spoiler:

I went with red for the inside of the skirt after all, like all the Sisters have. The color doesn't feature prominently on this model but since white already stands out from the rest of the army's color scheme, I didn't want to take it too far by introducing another color. It'll be a lot more noticeable on the Crusader's robe who I think I may just give gold armor. I'm still undecided on that, but the reasoning is the same. With a significant portion of the model gold instead of beige and white instead of brown, I think I'm going to benefit from the red tying the models together.

On the flipside the Sister in charge of the Novitiates has a cape that I'm thinking of painting white. She'll still have her brown robes as usual, but since I already went for white on the Novitiates headgear I think a bit more white on the Sisters side isn't a terrible idea even if it decreases the gap between Sisters and clerics.
