So it turns out a guy with one of the best records in his sport is better at it than someone who's spent their professional life in a different sport. I better retract my challenge to play Steph Curry in a game of one on one, an offer I made after thinking basketball looked kind of easy from seeing it on the tv one time.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

The one I keep hearing is that Mayweather is going to fight McGregor, but this time in MMA, which is a thought so stupid that makes me wonder how someone can get old enough to express thoughts on the internet without dying of something before that point, like wandering into traffic or eating a piece of glass or something like that.

Thats pretty much how Ive felt about that fight the whole time and why I never agreed with someone that picked McGregor. Wrong sport, period. Thats also why Ive said on the flip side if it were MMA then Mayweather would get his ass handed to him on a silver platter.

Turns out a staged match with nearly half a billion dollars on the line in one of the most crooked sports in the world was all a sham! Who knew?

I enjoyed the fight in the same way I enjoyed watching The Ultimate Warrior take out Randy Savage at Summer Slam '92.

Had Mcgregor won, I'd give the "staged" theory some credence. There would've been some much, much larger payouts with the betting line that I saw going into the fight.

I think you have to be pretty dense to believe it was staged. It went exactly how I initially (in this thread, before I necro'd it) thought it would, although as the fight got closer, I admittedly fell prey to the hype monkey and believed that Mcgregor had better than a punchers chance. Silly me!

Anyone who could look at this fight objectively knew how it would turn out. Maybe some were a bit surprised by the initial rounds, but not the end result.

Oh, I don't mean staged as in McGregor took a dive or the like, I mean staged as in it was not a real contest and never was. McGregor was shamefully unprepared to get so visibly gassed as he was by round 8 or 9.

Somewhere in south-central England.

I'm not a huge fight fan, but based on general knowledge, common sense, and what the experts were saying, McGregor lasted longer than expected, but the end result was not in doubt.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I reckon he only lasted so long because the other fella took his time to give the punters a bit of a show.

I'm no expert either, but it's fairly obvious that he wouldn't be right for that kind of fight. It was a money making gimmick, but I hope the spectators weren't too disappointed.

It was fun, only thing I disliked was missing half a round because my shady streaming site got shutdown before I found another one to continue the show! The interwebs win streak remains unbroken.

I'm an MMA fan who loves every aspect of the sport. I love the trash talk prior to the fighters signing the dotted line(1), press conferences after the fight is signed, the world tours to promote it, speculation from experts and other fighters in the industry about the fight, the weigh-ins (that's when things usually get chippy), the fight of course, then the post fight interviews and press conferences, the fight breakdowns, then the next fight (repeat from 1).

This fight delivered for me.

I think that's totally cool. I'm not much into sports, but I can see why MMA would be a fun one to follow, especially with "colourful" characters like McGregor. (My mam would have called him a "gurrier".)

The 'dance for me, boy' line? That delivered for you?

In terms of adding to the narrative and drama of the fight, sure.

Nice try.

No try at anything. I can see what you assumed I was implying, and I can say that wasn't my intention at all.

For me, that was the moment for me that the fight stopped be a bemusing, overhyped spectacle. Instead it became too try hard, throwing a ham-fisted faux contraversy about race on top of everything else. It felt like the pre-game to a wrestling match where both wrestlers thought they were supposed to be the heel.

Hah, that's a good way to put it. But both are that kind of character I think. They make a name for themselves being hated.

I think the racial angle that folk took from this is unfounded for 2 reasons.

He's a foreigner, expecting him to know/understand the taboos of American racial lingo and all its intricacies is a bit of a stretch. Secondly, the context of how he said it was in mimicry of a dude throwing money at a stripper, while Mayweather was dancing on the stage for whatever reason. Tasteless, sure, but its not like he took on a southern accent and pretended to be a slavemaster.

I agree that it was a faux controversy, but the only thing ham fisted and too try hard about it was people trying to paint it as some racial attack.

Can I be positive about this a little bit? I wanna say they both did well. McGregor did manage to last that long, in his first match, against technically the best fighter in his class to date.

As for Mayweather, in the past his style, while proficient in evasive maneuvers and possessed of great stamina, didn't exactly do much but backpedal. However, he said he owed fans for the Pacquiao match and, he delivered. Mayweather used decent forward, aggressive momemtum against McGregor. To counter, McGregor gave almost as good he got and, for longer than expected.

I wish both of them well (and they both got hella paid anyway).
