Textrure gel? Learn something new every day, I'd never heard of it. I'll have to get some. I've never found a textured spray paint I liked, despite lots of trying.

I vote for extensions really - the more entries the better.

Hmm- got a link on that gel? I only find hair care products.

This is what I used (but don't order from there, you don't want to be paying shipping from NZ looks like it's a UK brand I could only find it in UK, OZ and NZ)
Other names are pumice gel, artist's texture medium.
I know one of the model railway scenery companies does big tubs in earth-tones too, just a bit more expensive tho.

Does that include my entry? Come on folks, I know its a bad time of year for many. But we are in danger of letting this slip away. It's a great theme as well. Generous extension as well.

I wouldn't want to earn my rivets in a 2 Builder Field. Feels like cheating. Think of the children!

My bad, I've received 3 entries so far

Ok, so mine was going to be an 8 part wrecked C-130 plane and it was going to be awesome...still waiting on the plane. Maybe it'll make it in time, but likely not. I'll still post up pictures if it doesn't make it.

*Reminder to all participants*
We are into the last two weeks of the extended deadline.
I've received enough finished entries to fill a podium so there will be no further extensions.
So lets get these projects finished...for the children

Well, crap, I posted and then never came back, thinking the contest had ended...not that I've had much free time to dedicate to this in the past month anyway. Now I see we have until the 13th, and that you guys are pretty much waiting on me.

I will make an attempt and see what I can get out by next Friday.

These are really, really good. I'd love to see some progress pics, and and/or a tutorial on how you made these. I really like the texture and the details like the sign, the star wars Krayt Dragon skeleton and the tire marks/crashed Ork trukk/buggy!

I'm not expecting to win, or probably even finish in time, but I hope you don't mind if I join in a few days before the contest is over. I discovered this thread about a week ago while I was sick. I was too inspired by the topic not to try to join in.

My idea is to have a young girl hiding behind some abandoned promethium barrels. She is holding a pistol in one hand and a stuffed animal in the other. She has two more stuffed animals around her "outfitted" for war to help herself feel safe.

My starting point. I have a barrel mold that I made, which was used to create the two good barrels made from apoxie sculpt, and the bad one made from hot glue and then cut in half. The figure is from Mage Knight, I cut it apart to use the head, and possibly hands and feet from. The base is foam core slathered up with dollar store spackle.

Here the barrels have been glues down, and sand added to the base.

Rabbit stuffed animal, and parts of the teddybear.

Stopping for the night, but feel I made good progress. Both the teddy bear I sculpted and the primed barrels were dry by this morning. I'm starting to consider not having the girl in the terrain piece, and have it show stuffed animals and guns that were left behind.

The finished teddy bear sculpt

The main piece all painted up.

The teddy bear and stuffed rabbit painted. Bunny needs some touching up. Also 1000 internet points to anyone who knows who that bunny is.

Great stuff. That tyrannid pod is really striking, and of course 28mm stuffed animals are always impressive.

Sorry, just trying to do the math here...is that 5:13AM Saturday morning (Pacific Standard Time)? I think I'm going to need every minute and even then completion is looking optimistic.

Thanks!

edit: still trying to figure out the timestamp thing...I think that calclation should be 5:13AM Saturday morning UK (GMT)...so 10:13PM Friday night (PST)

Z-Ray and kestral, thanks!

@kestral, I really like your idea of a statue in a schola

@Fango, yours is looking better and better. Each update pic shows that a lot of additional work has gone in. I hope you are able to finish in time.

I'm posting one last little update pic. Despite how small the first teddy bear I made was, I realized it was way too big for 28mm scale so I tried to make one even smaller:

I've made some changes to my original idea, and with RL needing undivided attention the next two days, I'm sending in my finished pics to Z-Ray for judging. Good luck eveyone.

I really like those spore thingy bobs. What are they made out of and where can I get them?

The larger ones are marbles wrapped in a thin layer of green stuff, and in the case of the gray one, epoxy-sculpt. The smaller ones are actually just balls of green stuff rolled into spheres...I used more blue in the mix so they would be less sticky and dry faster. To smooth them out, I got my fingers wet and gently went over them to get rid of the finger prints...then I superglued them into place, making sure to get any rogue finger prints with my sculpting tool.

I then used a metal air nozzle attachment used for filling up basket balls ( but any thin, hollow tube or pipe would work, maybe even a coffee stirrer straw). I used water to lube it and began making a randomly dispersed pattern of depressions into the spheres. Next, I used the back of a jewelers file handle, but anything about the same diameter as the tube used to press the tiny rings into the surface). I was trying to make it look like a sphere wrapped in a thick, fleshy net...so needed it to look like two layers. I pressed the dimples in, and then used my sculpting tool to carefully push and pull at some of the circle edges to make them look more organically shaped.

That was pretty much it, I waited for them to cure and then went back in with more green stuff to make the stringy nets between them and attaching them to the nest.

More progress pics...getting close!

Now between work, spending time with my wife and kids, hosting a halloween cookie decorating party tonight at my house, sleep, and sanity...I have less than 15 hours to paint this thing, take final photos and PM them to our gracious judge. Place your bets now folks!

Time is up and we have 6 entries now

I'll be doing my judging over the next couple of days and then post the public voting.
The terrain pieces all look fantastic and a special shout out to Fango for supreme effort to make the deadline.

I look forward to announcing the winner (and to see the theme they choose for the next competition)
